I'm curious as to when you're dealing with a sorcery or necromancy, if the rightful formation of the matrix (when both mana types are put into it) is a blend of the two mana types throughout the whole matrix, or if it's segmented, where parts of it might be elemental, and other parts lunar.
Sorry if thats hard to understand.

Maybe we should have a new magic skill that would help us in controlling hybrid magics. Something like Mana Interpolation. And for every spell we cast with multiple mana types we learn a percentage based on what percent of non-guilded (to us) magic was contained in the spell matrix. So if we used shadows tend which could be like 40% lunar, 60% life and we were a moon mage we would be awarded say 50 bits for casting the spell. 20 bits would go to PM and 30 bits would go to Mana Interpolation. But if we were a war mage all 50 bits would go to MI. So as things progressed we would eventually get enough skill to see the backfires decrease and even be able to harness mana to help the spell based on our MI skill.
Sound like anything people would be interested in?

I'm inclined to think it is neither one or the other. Imagine spinning two threads together, one woven with the other to create what is a single thread. Now, weave that into a pattern. The threads are still seperate things, but at the same time together, and both woven into occupying the same relative spaces in that pattern.

actually my theory and it goes into the new mana theory too is that the spell pattern is really two wave lengths put together
sort of like if you have one sound, and then another sound and then mix them together to make a new sound
these mana waves are very volitile since they are mended together but not on the same band, sorta like having an AM and an FM radio station going at once on the same radio
certain mana types are more volitile to eachother then others are
I suspect the wavelenghts in distance go in a pattern like this
life, elemental, lunar, holy.
which side of the spectrum life or holy on is umm unknown to me, but life and holy cannot mix because they are too far apart from eachother, lunar and elemental blend together better then elemental and holy, so if you pump elemental mana into a lunar and holy spell, you'll most likely trigger the holy and elemental backfire rather then the lunar and elemental backfire
stablist mix of mana is lunar and elemental since they are closest in range, lunar and holy is more stable then elemental and holy, Elemental and life is more stable then lunar and life.
course this is all theory and it seems the only backfire that works is elemental and holy since i'll be damned but I've never backfired on an elemental spell using lunar mana, or a holy spell for that matter

According to Team Magic at the Mana seminar at this past SimuCon, the order of mana, from lowest to highest wavelength is:
Lunar
Elemental
Life
Holy
Any two manas can make a mixed mana spell, except Life and Holy.
Any mana mixed with Life gives you Necromancy, any mix excluding Life mana is Sorcery.
Trying to cast a spell using the wrong mana type has to overcome the resistance of the matrix to the mana you are using, while not overpowering the matrix. Low mana definitely causes backlash, high mana backfire may also produce backlash.
Using ANY mana in a mixed mana spell automatically faces at least some resistance, the amount of resistance determined by whether the mana being used is one of the mana types used by the spell, so Elemental into an Elemental/Lunar spell faces X resistance, while Holy mana into the same spell faces 2X resistance, although it might be X*X instead.
There are different backlashes based on both the mana type of the spell, and the mana type being used.

That's sorta what I think as well. The double-whammy for us is that while the pattern itself expects multiple mana-types (inherently unstable) we can only supply it with one of them, or even a different one altogether. Not good, as demonstrated by all the rampant arm-exploding going on.
So this brings to mind another possibility for Sorceries and Necromancies... Cooperative Casting.
Held mana by group members doesn't actually feed directly into your spell (per current Magic Theory), so that wouldn't work. What we'd need is two different magic-users actually concentrating on creating and powering a single spell pattern. Need that Elemental/Lunar Sorcery cast? Grab yourself a Warrior Mage and a Moon Mage. Each works on the part(s) of the pattern that suits the mana they provide. Since the lunar mana will be going only into the lunar parts, provided by the lunar user, there won't be (as much a chance of) the backlash caused by the conflicting mana types... although there would still be the inherent instability of the pattern itself. Net result: Sorceries/Necromancies become less dangerous through the careful use of cooperation. Not harmless... just not as dangerous.

>>I thought holy was at one end and life was at the other because one of the Magic GMs (think it was Damisaak) said that mixing the two manas was impossible because they were at opposite ends of the spectrum
Actually, at the seminar, it was implied that the wavelengths of Life and Holy mana were so short that you needed the devotion/soul state/etc. to enhance the mana to where it was strong enough to work with, so my thought on why they wouldn't be mixable was that they just don't have enough solidity on their own to form a multiple mana matrix.
Which leads me to the speculation that the mana matrix is formed from one mana, with the other mana being used for finer details than the matrix mana can normally handle.
Lunar + anything = Lunar matrix, other mana fills in fine details.
Elemental + Life or Holy = Elemental matrix, other mana fills in fine details.
Life and Holy mana can modify a matrix from another mana type, but cannot form a matrix that can be modified by another mana type.
And, as a result of this speculation, it would appear that the "fineness" of the final spell would be determined by the second mana type used in the matrix, with Holy providing the most delicate effects, followed by Life mana, with the Lunar/Elemental mix providing the coarsest effects for a mixed mana spell.
How's that for jumping off the cliff?
