Apologies if this post doesn't belong here, but I couldn't find a better spot for it.

Question: do buffing or debuffing spells on critters affect how well you learn from them?

Example one: swamp troll casts ES on itself (or whatever the Magic 2.x equivalent is). Does this make it teach more weapon skill, because it's harder to hit?

Example two: I maledict a creature. Do I learn less from it, since it has less effective skill?

No.

However, some spells can affect the difficulty of a critter, basically spells like Tiungle which can cause them to lose their weapon and/or shield, which will decrease how much of your weapon skill you can learn from them, since they lose the ability to parry and/or shield block; and may decrease the amount of defenses you can learn from them, since losing a weapon usually decreases their offensive power.

Some creatures, even while teaching you less offenses, may teach you more defenses without their weapon, primarily sapling trolls, since my understanding is that claw trolls are much nastier in their attacks.

ES is a definite "No", since all it does is provide a modicum of protection from damage and potentially lowering the level of a hit, it will lower the amount of skill you will learn from the hit, but not how much you can learn from the creature; but I don't know enough about Maledict to say for certain.

My understanding is that this is not the case. When a creature has a certain stat or skill buffed or debuffed, the experience gain check is made against the base value, not the effective value. The logic (which I seem to rember being spoken by valdrik, but this memory is fuzzy) is so the players are not discouraged from using debuffs to weaken a creature, and to prevent potential abuse of buffs such as using swirling winds on your enemies to get more experience.

Check the WM Folders.

D man commented on this very thing when someone asked.

So, just to be sure I'm clear on this: experience is awarded off of base ranks vs. base ranks?

Pretty much, generally.
