What's the official stance on this? I recall at one point it was available for everybody, but now only Traders. I don't really see the logic in this, or at least the consistency. Why not make bundles Trader only too? I'm not suggesting we do that .. but it seems to treat gem pouches one way and bundles another doesn't make much sense. Plus if I sell individual pieces, shouldn't I make more than somebody who's selling them wholesale? I'm sure I'm looking too much into it at this point..

Some abilities I understand being guild specific but this, among a few others, isn't one of them. My real reason for bringing this up is I don't use Trader's to sell my gems. Yes I'm taking a loss, but I'm just that stubborn about it :) So instead I wrote a script that gets and sells all of my gems.. if I came back after a long hunting trip that's a whole lot of scrolling, which I was recently hassled for by a Trader and his companion. I'm not blaming them either, scroll is a pain, but my question to them is what else am I supposed to do? I have the obvious choice of relying on a Trader but then it's like I'm being forced into being dependant on another guild, which I'd rather not do.

Hope this doesn't sound TOO whiny. Don't get me wrong, I have plenty of respect for Traders. And if I had the option of selling my own gem pouches, I would probably end up going through Traders anyhow. But until then, this is my silent protest. Or I guess not silent, given all the scroll and what not...

I don't think that was too whiny. You brought up a logical problem with DR. Of course, you do realize that you will be getting a "OMG thatssa traders deal, blah blah blah". And if you don't....wow.

Yeah, I'd like to sell my pouches myself sometimes. When I'm up in Creepers/Marauders on my other char, and I have 5 full pouches all tied up, and no traders for 3 days, I tend to get a whee miffed. How about we address this, since it should be simple to do.

It is skill based more or less, You just have to know which shop to use. If you have the climbing/swimming it is not a problem Rossman's deals in bulk. If you don't want to head to rossman's right away, Tie up the gem pouches and they only take one spot in your vault. Get 8 or 10 of them togeather or 20 or 30 and take the trip to rossman's to sell them in bulk. From Theren you can be there in a like a minute or so.

There are gem shops that buy in bulk from non-traders (as Cadd mentioned) and tanners that only buy in bulk from traders.

The gem shop on Fever Point (M'riss) also buys in bulk from anyone.

>>>tanners that only buy in bulk from traders.

Which ones are these?

Then my protest is in vain :) Thank you for enlightening me, I wasn't aware of this. I just assumed one jeweler was like the rest.

I'm not completely certain, but I remember not being able to sell bundles somewhere. Being that I spend most of my time in Therengia, I'd guess it's somewhere in that province. Perhaps Throne City? Anyone else know?

That is strange: I've never had trouble with selling bundles. But then, I've never tried to sell them in Throne City either.

As for gems, The gembuyer in Muspar'i will buy in bulk from anyone, as will the one in Horse Clan and the one down by Corik's wall.

I don't tie up my pouches unless I'm sure there will be a trader around, and if not I"ll sell them individually.

As far as utilizing a trader though, its not so much dependance as a smart business move. I tie all my bundles and vault then, and once the trader I do business with is around, I'll give him anywhere between 10-35 bundles. With the bonus that traders can pull on top of it, the one time I made over 300 plat in the one sale. And any gems pouches I've happened to tied off and not been able to sell I'll dump into the mix. While I don't like 'dependance' on a guilde either, and I don't have to since I am able to sell all my items individually, I highly recommend forging a relationship with a trader to garner free coin for you, and free tip/exp for them.

This has happened to me too; just don't worry about it and ignore them. I've been selling gems since long before "bulk" was even a twinkle in a GM's eye, so I don't really see the need for a Trader. That, and the fact that I pride myself on being able to do things independently, and have little regard for monetary wealth.

The way I see it, Traders have as much right to hassle me about selling gems my way as I have the right to antagonize them about selling gems for me: none at all.

That's when you kick the trader's teeth in and laugh then offer to teach them appraisal. That's what I do anyway.

You can sell bundles in TC as a non trader, and you can also sell bulk gems in TC as a non trader.

How do you know if a trader isn't skimming some coin off the top? Is there a list of traders known to do this that I can get so I can avoid them? I like to tip a good amount on a trader who increases the amount I get on a gem pouch by quite a bit, but I never fully trust the trader, how do I know he didn't keep a gold or two from the profit and give me a less than total amount from the sell?

You can't.

You could always sell the gems yourself if you are not a trusting person.

I don't know how well it actually works, but I always ask the NPC appraiser to appraise the pouch for me before I hand it over to the trader. I've had fairly skilled traders give me several gold less than the appraiser told me it was worth. I figure that's probably not a good sign, but there could be some variables in pouch-selling I don't understand, I guess.

I just appraise my pouch before I give it to a trader, and am expecting to see a nice increase from my appraisel. If a trader skims a gold off the top and I am still getting a bonus in the range I expect, then why should I care? If I suspect that a trader is skimming and I am not getting a bonus like I would normally expect, then I might not give him a tip, or I just might not give him my second, third and fourth pouches.

My main concern is quickly selling my pouch, and getting more than I would selling on my own. I have not caught a trader scamming me yet. And if I don't catch them, am I really harmed?

guess.

More than I can figure out, watching traders of multiple levels and running my own little trader. Basically, selling through a trader is a luxury that really is primarily dependant on how much your time is worth to you. Most traders I know, from being on both sides, don't skim. Its not worth it. Reputation is everything when you're dealing with the kind of cash a gem store trader does on a consistant basis.

The best defense is to know what your pouches are worth, ?10%. Don't fret the silvers on a plat pouch, but if the pouch is worth 1-1.2 plat and the trader offers <0.8, say thanks but no thanks. Sie might be having a bad hair day, the buyer might be particularly difficult right then, you might not have filled the pouch quite full, you might have grabbed the wrong one, whatever ... its always your choice to sell. Thats why every trader I have dealt with, at least at first, asked if the price was acceptable.

And remember, it does always come out in the wash, eventually. Yeah, you might loose a few gold to a couple little traders, either on accident or on purpose ... then you can get a Xip or an Apu in there and clean up on a collection of Adan'f or scorp pouches. Making multi-plat more by goin through a top trader can make using the little ones, well, to put it bluntly, charity work. However, that's how little traders turn into the big ones who can eventually get you those huge returns.

Because gem pouch selling does scale through the circles, unlike healing, it is quite useful to help the little traders grow up to become big traders. The more big traders we have around, the higher prices will go overall in gem pouches. Traders are sort of a resource, in a way, and one well worth nurturing for everyone who sells a lot of gems.

You could also forge a good relationship with a particular trader you trust. Has worked out very well for me. Bundles and pouches can tie up into "one" item so you can easily vault them until your partner is around. I consistantly get a third added onto the value of my bundles/pouches.
