I am still playing with Chill Spirit, and am glad its still on preview. So far with 160 TM, it doesn't teach me at all against ogres, swamp trolls or crocodiles. My guess is that 160 TM is just over their cap. But I don't kill very fast with it either. So I dropped down to rock trolls to try it out there. Two casts of 12 mana chill spirit- troll still standing. took I believe 2 more casts of 6 mana to kill one- I lost track because more trolls kept piling in. It was a good thing i was in a room with good mana. I eventually killed all 4 trolls with CS but I am fairly sure it took me at least 4 casts of 6 mana each. It was more effective when let the spell fully prepare, but targetting or snapping didn't seem to make a differance.
I can pretty much kill a rock troll with 1 shot with my arbelest- thats at about 130 in HX. But it takes 4 shots and a minimum of 24 mana to kill a rock troll?
I can't compare this spell against other creatures easily, but I still learn TM against crypt fiends with HE, which seem very close in skill range to Swamp Trolls, but learn nothing from Swamp Trolls.
I am just not sure how I would/will use this spell. At first i was very excited about it. But now it reminds me more of the old AE. The stun feature is nice, but against trolls of course no use. I need to try it out against more creatures, but am not sure what the step up from ogres/swamp trolls will be. Please don't suggest peccaries- since I can't skin them its just a waste of my time to hunt them. I really want to love this spell- the messaging is great- just can't figure out when I would use it.

Chill Spirit is deadly... at my current circle, full target 20 mana is a 100% kill against low level graverobbers (Barbarians included). That's far from overpowered compared to most TM spells, but the beauty here is it forces the graverobber to depart and leave the stuff behind (unless they are first circle and abusing mechanics, in which case I recommend reporting).
The other thing is that this spell allows you to heal your spirit health. This makes it crucial after a recent death or for recovering from AE.
At my current circle (46, PM is 270-ish, TM is 150-ish) I find the spell works best prepped at 10 with either 5 or 10 harnessed mana added. 30 mana will typically kill a gargoyle in one shot, but teaches poorly. Vipers go down in three shots of 20 or so and teach pretty well. Luecros survive longer than vipers for me, but teach worse, possibly because they're evading a good bit of the spell. Marauders did not teach me at all.
The creatures this spell would seem to be most effective against are living creatures who rely heavily on Shield, Parry, and/or Armor for defense, or who have significantly more Vitality than Spirit. It is particularly ineffective against creatures with lots of spirit (unfortunantly no one is sure which creatures these are) and those who rely principally on Evasion (in which case AE is particularly likely to be an effective alternate).

Chill Spirit v. Protection From Evil on 01/03/2003 03:32 PM CST
Excerpted from the spell lists on the Dragonrealms web page: http://www.play.net/dr/info/spells/spelllist.asp?guild=6&name=Cleric
"The Protection from Evil spell defends the faithful against the unholy touch of the Undead. It will also attempt to repel various varieties of magic including Necromancy, Sorcery, and all that employed by otherwise cursed or Undead beings. While not evil, attacks with origins in Holy magic or by minions of the dark gods are also buffered by this spell's pattern"
So why doesn't Protection From Evil protect against the backlash from casting Chill Spirit on the Undead? It is both a) an attack with origins in Holy magic, and b) employed by Undead beings (although not intentionally - the messaging indicates how the spell pattern gets infused with undead energy as it lashes back at the caster).

>>This is a great question Shavay and it has been a month and no answer on this. I would also like to know why.
Probably because it just sees the matrix of the spell that says "after effect of CHs" rather than "after effect of Chs carring undead Spirit".
Basically, the CHs spell hides the Undead spirit from PFE.
