<<I don't understand what there is about the physical form of the Geni which makes you feel they should be affected. They are much more of a sprite / fairie (although cursed) than being any sort of evil / undead.

I can't speak for everyone, but my feelings are based mostly on the maggots.

Elanthia is a fantasy world, and as we're often reminded Elanthia is not the "real world". However, there are a lot of things that behave the same:

Up is up.
Fire is hot.
Water is wet.
Death is something to avoid.
Idiots are idiots.
Bows are ranged weapons.
We walk on the floors, and not the ceilings.
(this is 5 seconds worth of comparisons.)

In RL, maggots only eat dead flesh. Even hospitals use maggots, because they are very effective in treating people with dead tissue that would otherwise die of gangrenous infections. The maggots will eat the dead tissue, and leave the living tissue alone. The presence of the maggots only makes sense to me if the Geni is composed of dead flesh, unless there is something about "Elanthian Maggots" that hasn't been revealed to me.

I'm saying this without passion, (and I hope it reads that way) because I've been unable to successfully cast PLS on anything yet and never previously had the spell. (i.e., I have no idea what I'm missing)

Bah! Someone asked me if I had logs of the maggot messaging with Geni's, and the truth is, I don't.

Ok, so since I'm basically just repeating heresay, if anyone has any Geni messaging that includes MAGGOTS, I'd be very greatful if you could post it.

Otherwise, I expect to eat these posts, maggots and all. :::gulp:::

All living, cursed creatures have this crit messaging. It's akin to snakes with arms, tigers with hands, arrows that are "inserted and then withdrawn," etc. Even some skeletons give the maggot messaging. Not proof of anything, except that messaging specific to living, cursed creatures was never implemented.

I don't like PLS. I don't like hunting Undead. There is little benefit for hunting undead as a Rangah.

Good post Folc. The Genis having maggots is true... I had saved some messages about shooting a Geni and having it squiriting oily blood and also having a heart filled with maggots. Unfortunately I deleted them. But if anyone wants to dispute this, I can easily go back and obtain these messages again.

I think the point here is that PLS is incredibly limited in use. Clearly there are some critters who if aren't dead, are close enough so that this spell should work on them. What is the benefit of having this spell being this limited, other than having people not choose it? Seems more like a waste of time having put all this work into a spell that can rarely be used.

Lainn,

What you say may be 1000% true. Several of my friends have said the same thing to me. I was not trying to PROVE anything, I was just responding to this:

"I don't understand what there is about the physical form of the Geni which makes you feel they should be affected. They are much more of a sprite / fairie (although cursed) than being any sort of evil / undead. (~Damissak)"

There have been numerous "situations" where the information behind the curtain (ie in GM land) doesn't mesh nicely with what is seen from a player POV. (And there have been some very persistent bugs that exhibited this behavior. SOP, SOP the second time, Snipe, etc.)

I'm just trying to say that thinking that PLS might work on something that has maggots falling out of it isn't a far-fetched assumption to make from a player POV. (Especially if we're seeing the wrong messaging.)

Maybe you should be able to cast it on yourselves to cure flesh rot. Just a thought.

Just to end the debate:

< Moving with powerful grace, you fire a broad-barbed arrow at a forest geni. The arrow lands a vicious strike that detonates the geni's chest into a shower of rotting flesh and squirming yellow maggots.

The broad-barbed arrow lodges itself firmly into the forest geni!
The forest geni cries out to the forest for protection. Getting no response, it collapses to the ground.
[You're solidly balanced]
[Roundtime 1 sec.]

Also, wouldn't rotting flesh (which the above message proves the Geni has) be exactly the type of thing for scavengers to consume?

Messaging bug! Cursed and Evil critters use same messages as corporeal undead.

>>wouldn't rotting flesh (which the above message proves the Geni has)

Using your logic, I have logs that prove snakes have arms, swamp trolls have 3 legs, lipopods have heads, and arrows can be used like swords because they kill "with a powerful swing" and can be "inserted then withdrawn from the hamstring".

The error is in the messaging, NOT the spell effect. Damissak already answered this, why can't you people just let it go? Sheesh.

Actually this is what he said.

>>I'll disagree with you (and no reason for you to be sorry for your opinions). I don't understand what there is about the physical form of the Geni which makes you feel they should be affected. They are much more of a sprite / fairie (although cursed) than being any sort of evil / undead.

GM Damissak<<

Not everyone knows this is a bug. I didn't. He couldn't understand why we would think PLS would work on genis so I posted my reasoning why I thought it should affect it. Also in another post, someone said there was some debate as to whether genis give the maggot message or not. So I posted to clear that up.

If we're expected to be able to distinguish between faes/fairies/sprites/corporeal undead/cursed/evil/etc. then there should be either one of two things done. Fix the bug or update the beastiary. But it's not the players fault we don't know the histroy behind every critter in DR. If I shoot it and it has rotting flesh then that's enough proof for me. I don't want to have to go and investigate the lifestory of everything I hunt.
