Heh as a counter to Pureblades post I have recently dicovered quite the opposite.
It seems that while I am in combat somewhere (even a continent away) my horse retreats from combat and tries to avoid being engaged. Might want to look into this as its quite annoying for others in the room, and I would hate for them to get pissed and attack the horse...

I've found that there are 4 reasons for that.
1...You have been away from your horse a long time.
2...You have had your horse in combat for a long time with no real rest.
3...There is something wrong with you...mostly yer health here, bleeders ect.
4...Someone is hiding in the room.
About 75% of the time I find it is #1. Pat,rub, hug, scratch, feed and groom will solve this problem very quickly.

I've had this happen quite a few times and none of your reasons could have been the cause. Most of the time it has happened within a half hour or so of having it out of the stable.
I see this as being caused by the growing bond between the Paladin and the Warhorse. The horse senses its master is in combat, wants to help out, but doesn't know how to help. Heh
