Horses and GOL on 06/10/2003 04:55 PM CDT
My character is an Empath who has a pony.
My character DID get the PREPARE lesson from the Stablemaster regarding nonoffensive spells.
My character gets thrown off her pony when casting Gift of Life (gol). She is not thrown off with other spells.
Please fix.
Thank you,

Most likely your pony does not know Magic tolerance. The bucking reaction is not always caused with passive spells, but there is a chance. It is almost always caused with offensive spells.
I'd have a ranger check your pony to see if it knows Magic tolerance or not.

Well, I know my pony doesn't have Magic tolerance, but magic tolerance is specifically for offensive spells. It seems to me then, while the short term solution is me getting my pony taught, which I will do, it still remains that GOL is in the wrong category.
Empaths would not be able to cast an offensive spell, and even if they could cast something that would spook a horse, all GOL does is cause an internal sense of confidence and hardiness, no lights, no glamour. The horse wouldn't even realize something had happened.
Thank you Candidus, for both of your helpful and constructive replies.

I've never seen any statement from a GM saying that Magic tolerance is only for offensive spells. By the very definition of the Instruction, it is to prevent the horse from reacting badly to any magic that is cast by it's rider.
Why the bucking reaction sometimes fails with passive spells I do not know.

Syrath, do you wait for full prep on GOL?
Though I didn't have much time to test it when I got my first horse (he was fully trained within a few days. <G>) my experience was that without magic tolerance, I could cast all day as long as I didn't hit full prep. The moment I got that message I'd be kicked off, regardless of spell type.

Oddly enough, casting it before it was fully prepped worked!
Hrm, still means I can't use cambrinth on it. It need to put so much in the orb to work devices, and if I don't wait until full prep it will backfire. ::chuckles::
