Really basic question: For someone not interested in jousting is there any benefit to having a mount other than RP purposes?

Not really. There help going through the desert to Muspar'i and I think they can ignore some minor tripping stuff.
Beyond that, nope.

If your a paladin they will fight beside you.
The bucket burbles suddenly as its contents begin to dissolve....
Suddenly it spits out some niniam field plate onto the floor.

In my experience they are generally too buggy/ineffective to use, and the pain of their management is way to high.
It be nice if being mounted gave nicer combat bonuses and the system for interacting with horses was not a giant pain in the arse.

Given the lack of combos needed in 3.0, I'm wondering how effective they are at fighting now.
At least I recall half of war horses doing so poorly past a certain point was because of their balance/position normally being completely atrocious because they attacked with no real concept of how to fight.
The teeth lands a solid (5/23) hit that pokes the teeth into Turul's rear end (more embarrassing than painful!).
