During the little horse meeting at simucon the GM asked for us to think of ideas for horses. I had a general idea and finally got it together enough I think.

The thing I would like to do with my horse is just get out there and ride. Most all the paths and roads were originally made with walking in mind. On horseback it's too quick or there are so many turns that it saves no time at all. I know horse trails were mentioned and those would be nice. How about just a flat open plain?

Make an area out to the west that is flat out open. Set it up one of two ways or if possible a combination of the two. First is just have the path be a WHOLE LOTTA rooms. On horseback at full gallop you can chew up those rooms in about 5 minutes. Just typing "w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w w" while on foot will take you more like half an hour. This makes it pretty much a horse only area except for the folks who have 30 minutes to kill. Second way would be to see what ocean mechanics can be used. With this you could have a little freedom to move around and not just following a single path. With this you could also probably program it so that no one just on foot could even try and walk.

I would prefer a combination of these two ideas. I'd like the feeling of moving from room to room but still see landmarks in the distance so we know how close or which direction to go. If you just entered the area and all you get is room messaging that you are moving like on the temple or Aesry steps, that's boring and you lose the feel of movement and speed I'm looking for with the horse.

If this would take a huge hunk of resources then possibly to cut this down model it after maze areas. Then just figure how many West movements will get you out of it.

At the other end of this plain (or flat in the middle of it) have a small oasis with a horse shop and some other little things. Then maybe a few little hunting areas nearby, maybe a hunting area made specificly for horseback hunting, or if the vast room model was workable have critters that roam "somewhere" in the open plains.

I would like for horses to be trained to bear wounded people, or for it to be possible to ride double on them (with the consent of the owner). I would like for them to perhaps be able to drag travoises- not that that's likely as it might step on trader toes. And as others have said, it should be possible for riders to be able to join and ride together. If the horse and owner spend sufficient time together, perhaps the horse should guard his rider in the event of injury or death- Unless there is someone close by that a smart horse can bring to help. A more sure-footed horse should be ridable on mountain trails- One of the biggest sticking points with me getting a horse is that the beast simply cannot always go where I want or need to.
