When I first read the post announcing the release of the rumors system for Bards and Traders I thought it sounded pretty interesting and fun. Tracking down and visiting with the various NPC's from time to time to hear of new rumors would add a new dimension of enjoyment for many in DR I believe. Trying to filter through the silly and misleading rumors to figure out which ones really foreshadowed upcoming events could really be neat. However, when I read that players could also submit rumors to some NPCs (based upon guild, race, sex preferences of the NPC) I stopped and scratched my head. It seems to me that by offerring this option, the whole rumor system would now contain about 99% fiction and 1% fact (the 1% being those GM/NPC generated rumors that hint at something to come in game). Based upon those odds, I really don't think I'd spend my time collecting and passing on rumors. I just don't see the point. I don't mean to be critical because I think the system has a tremendous potential for interaction amongst players across Elanthia. What fun it would be to really track the rumors and finally see a few come to fruition with an event or new release of some sort (even a very minor sort). I have an open mind to the system and perhaps I've overlooked some things that would make this a rich and satisfying HSN release. I'd appreciate any insights folks have.
Thanks!

One thing to consider is every rumor that is added is filtered through GMs. I imagine if far too many are being added manpower alone will limit how many there are. Furthermore I wouldn't want it to be easy to pick out the true and useful one, predicting future events is a Moon Mage specility (As for when event predicting is coming for us I thought it was HSN... but the word from Simucon is that when it comes even the occasional clerical vision will be filtered through a MM.)

Actually, I'm finding the rumors kind of fun... it was fun to reply to a Paladin's remark that Darius needed to be out and about more with the fact that I'd heard he had his eye on the envoy from Therengia, and that perhaps his attention was elsewhere at the moment.
It's little things like that which make DR seem to be more of a living, breathing world. Now admittedly, Plat isn't as likely to get overwhelmed with spurious rumors as prime is... but it's still a wonderful way to breathe life into day to day happenings, whether or not the rumors point to an actual event :)

You mean, kinda like real-life rumors? Sounds like it's working as intended, then. <g>
But seriously, not everything submitted by a player will be insults, fabrications, and fables. It'd be something like real life. "Somebody told me that his third ex-wife's second husband's brother's seventh adopted son got Dulcinia to giggle!"
Sure, the content might not be accurate, but it's probably what was told to the person after all. Rumors are fun that way. Just try to look for corroboration.
