Locksmithing death and YOU! on 06/29/2013 02:27 PM CDT
So anecdotally over the last few years I've noticed that (or seem to have noticed) that anytime I'm opening boxes, the frequency of botched traps goes up IMMENSELY once my pool reaches Mind Locked. Anyone else noticed it? Sure its easy enough to go into sleep mode and keep opening boxes, but I cant think of a single good reason as to why that should be the only way to open a few boxes.
Anyone else seeing this? Feels like we shouldn't have to be penalized for opening the treasure boxes we've earned. The traps themselves seem deadly enough without almost a guaranteed death if you open more than 6-7 a hunt.

I have definitely not ever observed this. I would bet a large amount of money that it is just your imagination and/or randomness with small sample size

It would be hard to notice unless you consistently disarm past mindlock which probably most do not? I remember thinking what Osus said though - it was just long ago as I don't work past mindlock on disarming ever anymore.

I consistently open boxes when I'm already mindlocked. I just go hunting for a while, then open all my boxes with no concern for mindstates. It's still worth getting all the money out even if I'm not learning anything

>>I could do a chart, but it wouldn't be terribly interesting (percentage of deaths before vs. after mind lock).
Keep in mind that the chances before mindlock are limited to the number of boxes you can pop before reaching mindlock, while the chances after mindlock are only limited to the number of boxes you have available.
Which also might be why you experience more traps going off before than after. If it takes you 3 boxes to lock (i know it's more but bear with me) and you have 12 boxes, then you're rolling the dice a lot more after you lock than before.
The teeth lands a solid (5/23) hit that pokes the teeth into Turul's rear end (more embarrassing than painful!).

That's a good point. For testing you could grab orbs and hug them to drain out your disarming quick. That's what I do when doing experience related testing
You could also just do the disarming part until you lock to make it so you can do as many as possible before locked, than do the lockpicking part afterwards. (and then the 'while locked' testing)

Don't worry, I'm aware of what's needed to make it a fair test. No point going into specifics at the moment though, unless Osus wants to do it.
You are right to point out that this might be what is causing the misperception though.
