Hmmm. In contrariness to what these guys have said, I've found that targetting a spell isn't necessary at low ranks. An untargetted general cast (Not cast chest) usually hits and being able to do that every 4 seconds can significantly improve learning over waiting 4 seconds for the preparation as well as the time for the targetting matrix. I've used this to bring a warrior mage up to 56 TM with only the normal difficulties of "Oops, my TM is too high for the critter I'm fighting." I'm currently able to lock the skill in bone wolves with no real difficulties other than finding good mana.

As a second thought, It seems to me that at low levels it's difficult to increase the damage of your TM spells significantly by changing the prep. An AEL of 3 and an AEL of 6, for instance, seem to do a similar amount of damage. While my primary and harness are decent, they're only about 15 or so ranks above my TM. I find that I really CAN'T put enough mana into a spell to change that effectiveness. The important thing to note about this is that given that AEL 6 is about equal to AEL 3, casting at the minimum required amount to get past MR is working for me as a strategy. If I keep a small enough cast amount and find decent mana I can cast ever 4 seconds without depleting my mana in the slightest.

You're trading mana efficiency for an increased rate of fire. Contrary to what some people may say, there is no 'best' way to learn TM. Quite frankly, I can learn TM doing anything that theoretically teaches it, as long as I keep at it long enough and there are enough critters. That's not to say that some methods aren't better than others, but it's often situational.

As for increasing the mana not increasing the damage, well, you're only increasing the potential - if you're snapping your spells there are good odds that you won't notice a difference from increased mana because you're not getting good, solid, direct hits. Using fully targetted spells, I notice major differences comparing mana used to actual effect. This is especially important when your opponent has a shield, since you may be landing hits but the shield is absorbing the damage. In that case, increased mana will help overcome the shield through sheer brute force.
