Okies here is my reasoning when I wrote that part of the system.
Elanthia's civilization is highly guild-based where the people that dwell in this world usually join the Guild that best reflects their talents, interests, and training. The warrior class guilds spend the majority of their lives training themselves along martial lines where the other guilds focus on spiritual or magical lines. Of course during the course of a persons life they may learn a couple other skills here and there that crosses guild boundaries but for the most part their focus will remain along guild lines.
So keeping this Elanthian-realism in mind when determining who would train the horses for the most part the first group that came to mind is Rangers. That guild's focus just seemed natural to step in here.
Now before you start argueing one way or another I ask you to take a step back and let me tell you what's going on as far as Horse Training completed for the initial release with a big exclamation on initial.
It is true that Rangers get a big part of the basic training of Horses where Paladins end up dealing with training of other players some of the basic combat horse-related things.
Rangers will be able to leadrope train and saddle train a horse. This won't mean too much at first since merchant sold horses will already be trained thusly but when capturing of wild horses goes live soon after the initial release then this will come into play more.
Rangers will be able to instruct a horse how to kneel, which the animal will need to know if some of the smaller races want to own a larger animal instead of a pony.
Rangers will be able to train a horse how to jump better. To clarify...All horses will be able to jump but this will give a bonus in that they will react better.
Rangers will be able to train a horse how not to panic when spells are being cast overhead.
Rangers will be able to train a horse how not to panic around the more animalistic humanoid races in Elanthia.
Finally...coming to the more controversial ones here probably...
Rangers will be able to train a horse to react better in a jousting situation. Rangers will only be able to do this after a Paladin has taught the Ranger jousting techniques. Even then this isn't a requirement for a horse to able to be ridden in a joust though.
Rangers will be able to train a horse to not panic in combat situations. A Ranger will only be able to do this after being trained by a Paladin on how to perform combat from horseback. Both the rider and the horse will have to be trained in basic combat maneuvers for the rider to perform attacks from horseback.
Rangers will be able to train warhorses. To clarify...this is instructing a naturally skittish animal to be able to fight side by side with its Paladin owner or even engage a target seperately on command of it's Paladin owner. Though anyone could own a trained warhorse only a Paladin will truly be able to handle them to the utmost of their ability.
Plus other stuff...
Okies this sounds like I'm giving a gold mine to Rangers. But like the Magic System the Horse System is gonna be huge in scope. This is only the initial release so of course I'm only scratching the surface of what will be around in the next year.
Example...Paladins may in the future be able to instruct their warhorse how to do a specific combat technique, Barbarians may be able to instruct their to do something else...etc...
Like Magic at one time Warrior Mages and Moon Mages seemed to have huge benefits from the system but as the system and the Guild Gurus developed things everyone benefited. This is very similar.
I've tried very hard in the last 6 months to create a basic release that everyone will enjoy and I don't think you'll be disappointed.
