Over the past year or two we've had problems with critters spontaneously becoming powerful smiter of shields. An obscure bug is changing the stats on natural attacks to make them inflict substantially more damage to shields than is intended, and so far we haven't been able to pin down exactly what is causing this.

As a result, I am removing shield damage from normal combat until we can find and fix the damage bug and make some overall changes to the entire system of combat-related gear damage. This change applies only to damage sustained through normal combat. Spells and attacks with hard-coded item damaging features will still function as before.

IMPORTANT: This is only a temporary solution. Shield damage will almost certainly return once we can find and resolve a few problems.

On a related side note, the combat system is also supposed to be damaging weapons (both from attacking and parrying) and armor in a manner similar to shields, but obviously the latter "features" aren't working, as this rarely if ever actually happens from normal day-to-day combat (most weapon/armor damage comes from graves). We'll be reviewing that code as well, and may end up making some changes there. It's a bit early to say whether we'll be fixing them to work or removing them completely, but either way there will probably be some fallout on the combat system as a whole.
