I started the timer when the first caracal hit melee. My exp looked like this:
Shield Usage: 197 30% learningLight Chain: 238 61% learning
Heavy Chain: 237 91% learningParry Ability: 325 88% learning
Multi Opponent: 216 29% learningHeavy Edged: 307 72% learning
Evasion: 295 85% learning

Armor and parry locked at about 2 minutes in, Multi Op locked at about 2:45, followed by Evasion at 4:11. Shield locked at about 7:30 and my exp looked like this:
Shield Usage: 197 31% mind lockLight Chain: 238 62% mind lock
Heavy Chain: 237 92% mind lockParry Ability: 325 89% mind lock
Multi Opponent: 216 30% mind lockHeavy Edged: 307 72% muddled
Evasion: 295 85% mind lock

Due to retreating I went below three caracals at melee at 8:50. I was back to three caracals at melee (all three caracals having retreated, left, and returned) by 11:20.

This was with one caracal facing, one flanking, and one behind. My stance was this:
You are currently using 50% of your evasion skill.
You are currently using 75% of your weapon parry skill.
You are currently using 60% of your shield block skill.
You are attacking with 100% of your offensive skill.
Last Combat Maneuver: Dodge

At about 20 minutes into it, my exp looked like this:
Shield Usage: 197 35% mind lockLight Chain: 238 66% mind lock
Heavy Chain: 237 94% mind lockParry Ability: 325 90% mind lock
Multi Opponent: 216 32% mind lockHeavy Edged: 307 73% dazed
Evasion: 295 87% mind lock

At this point, my mind was fluid so I slept.

An hour later, none of my combat skills have gone as low as perplexed except for a few seconds after each pulse. They look like this:
Shield Usage: 197 43% mind lockLight Chain: 238 73% mind lock
Heavy Chain: 237 99% mind lockParry Ability: 325 95% mind lock
Multi Opponent: 216 39% mind lockHeavy Edged: 307 78% bewildered
Evasion: 295 91% mind lock

Excellent. Finally, some HARD DATA. Thanks Fuquois. My experience with Basilisks is very similar. They aren't all that swarmy but if you use good "critter management" you can usually get a new one to come in before the first one tries to run so you end up with a steady run of 2 (one facing, one behind).

Now for those that can't lock before the critter runs off, have you looked at changing critters? Up/down/sideways to find one that fits your skill needs better?

Really, the only combat skill that doesn't lock before the first caracal runs away is my primary weapon. If I wanted, though, I could immobilize them and kill them with my sword when they started running. That would likely lock my weapon quicker, but either way is fine by me. Generally, after a certain point they all get to mind lock and stay there for the rest of the time I hunt.

Or... if you're talking about other people that can't lock their skills before the first creature runs away, disregard the previous post.
