I recently got my hands on one of the new forged boomerangs and after testing a little I'm sorta confused what they are intended for. They lodge often even though they have such pathetic damage ratings and are in the light blunt-melee range category. The returning action is reliable at least when it doesn't stick. But the fact the boomerang is able to return to your hand after you throw it is defeated by the fact it lodges. Right now its just a toy as far as damage is concerned and a bit of a farce in general.
I really love the idea of this weapon but couldn't justify using it over my Forged Steel Bola that has exceptionally better damage, wont lodge and I can easily pick it up without round time.

>>pathetic damage ratings
I think impact weapon stats are a lot more reliant on weight than puncture and slash counterparts. Because of that, it's hard to have a good impact rating when you're only dealing with a three volume weapon, and it looks like you used orasteel on top of that. You might want to try using gravsteel to get a bit of an impact bump. An ~18 stone weapon might be a lot different versus an 11 stone one. No promises though.
That said, I do wish things stopped lodging, too. It makes me sadface.

I like it when I throw a dagger or spear and it will lodge. Don't get me wrong I'm all for a variety of weapons choices that have different advantages and disadvantages. But I just can't seem to find the Niche for the boomerang that lodges.
In reality as in dreams, nothing is quite as it seems.

Lodging weapons are fine; however with that said, boomerangs should not be one of them IMO.

>>You might want to try using gravsteel to get a bit of an impact bump.
Since I had the metal on hand I thought I'd take a look, turns out it didn't bump the impact high enough up to reach the next range, only saw an improvement in slice:
The metal appears to be composed of: 14.94% platinum, 68.09% high carbon steel, and 16.97% gold.
A steel boomerang is a light thrown and light blunt melee-ranged weapon.
You are certain that it could do:
dismal puncture damage
low slice damage
low impact damage
You are certain that the boomerang is fairly balanced and is decently suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.
You are certain that the steel boomerang is rather flimsy and easily damaged, and is in pristine condition.
The steel boomerang is made with metal.
You are confident that the metal in the steel boomerang has a quality of 99, placing it at 'extremely pure' on the official Trader's Scale.
You wonder if the metal in the steel boomerang is very hard.
You guess that the metal in the steel boomerang has a durability of 26, placing it at 'poor durability' on the official Trader's Scale.
You estimate that the metal in the steel boomerang has a workability of 35, placing it at 'challenging to work with' on the official Trader's Scale.
You estimate that the metal in the steel boomerang has an electrical resistance of 30, placing it at 'a great conductor of electricity' on the official Trader's Scale.
You think it is likely that the metal in the steel boomerang has a thermal resistance of 50, placing it at 'good at transfering heat and cold' on the official Trader's Scale.
You believe that the metal in the steel boomerang has a physical resistance of 89, placing it at 'exceptionally good at repelling physical blows' on the official Trader's Scale.
You guess that the steel boomerang probably weighs a few tens of stones.
You are certain that the steel boomerang is worth exactly 22279 dokoras.

>>I like lodging on a conceptual level.
>>I dislike it on a "now I have to carry more things" and "make a more complicated script that goes beyond just 'pick up' and 'throw'" level.
I agree with you on this. Yeah its a great concept but makes stuff more difficult sometimes. Mainly I have a fear of losing the weapons I worked hard to collect. The fact you have to Search the critter or the weapon will vanish when the corpse does is just silly. And because only 4 critters like to stay in a room at a time, its possible to lodge something into a critter that leaves the room right away. Just too many variables that make the only attractive options for lodging weapons cheap and easily replaced.
In reality as in dreams, nothing is quite as it seems.

This is the app of the boomerang that was sold in the Over the Edge shop.
A bronze-banded boomerang of white ironwood is a light thrown and light blunt melee-ranged weapon.
You are certain that it could do:
low puncture damage (3/25)
dismal slice damage (1/25)
low impact damage (3/25)
You are certain that the boomerang is superbly balanced (11/13) and is poorly suited (3/13) to gaining extra attack power from your strength.
You are certain that the bronze-banded boomerang is appreciably susceptible to damage (7/18), and is in pristine condition (98-100%).
You are certain that the bronze-banded boomerang weighs exactly 12 stones.
You are certain that the bronze-banded boomerang is worth exactly 9000 lirums.

Might wanna put a tidbit into your brain that could help justify the return attributes of something like a boomerang. I'm hoping (and hoping and hoping) that someone will recognize that you shouldnt be able to throw a club from missile range, hit a target, and then bend down/pick up/throw again without any change do your location in the combat. If this turns into something that 3.0 fixes, you might see a whole new area of use for that boomerang of yours, lodging or not.
Food for thought.

AFAIK, anything with puncture lodges. I guess they got hit with the pointy end of the boomerang!
I enjoyed the damage-boost rollover bug bolas used to have, where a gravsteel bola would suddenly develop dismal puncture and start lodging into things.
>>This is the app of the boomerang that was sold in the Over the Edge shop.
There's a better apping one, that also sadly lodges! Also they're not in Prime anyway so...

Boomerangs suck.
This also makes me sadface, and I'd also like to see them change or get some special niche like returning to your hand, but IMO it's not really worth it. Tweaking the forging template might work, but digging into combat and completely changing lodging mechanics to make an exemption for boomerangs is probably more trouble than it's worth.

Just change the template to no puncture, up the slice, and impact a little.

Was there not a boomerang like weapon that returned to the thrower in the previous guild festival or 2010s Hollow Eve?
I doubt it was able to be forged, but I can't recall what it was exactly.

There was a boomerang from one of the Taisidon quests, which was the only returning boomerang I was aware of before forging.
