Heyo folks,
I've noticed that heavy weapons, geared more toward suitability than balance have become fairly popular with the new weapon forging. I recently forged a new greatsword with high carbon steel and just a touch of oravir to lighten it up. I then balanced it. Here's the appraisal:
A steel greatsword is a two-handed edged pole-ranged weapon.
You are certain that it could do:
low puncture damage
mighty slice damage
great impact damage
You are certain that the greatsword is fairly balanced and is soundly suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.
You are certain that the steel greatsword is rather flimsy and easily damaged, and is in pristine condition.
The steel greatsword is made with metal.
You are certain that the steel greatsword weighs exactly 83 stones.
You are certain that the steel greatsword is worth exactly 11319 lirums.
As someone who fights weapon-wielding critters, I've noticed that this weapon works better than my heavier version because less of the weapon is parried away. Where do folks weigh in? Is 2HE all about extreme damage, pay no attention to balance, or does balance serve a definite purpose in the minds of the general populace?
Thanks,
- Araine

Right now? Yeah, for the most part. Pretty sure they're nerfing that mentality in Combat 3.0 though.

I personally like the lightweight 2handed sword or warring axe which has the best balance of the high-damage 2HEs. Glaes can even reach soundly balanced with very extreme slice.

Ah! Very nice, I'll have to do some experimenting with glaes. I guess it's time to hit the mines again.

I would say the opposite. Right now, as I understand it, the extent to which you win the To-Hit contest factors disproportionately into the damage contest. High agility, with a well balanced weapon, is going to help your To-Hit factor much more than high strength/agility and suitedness, at least right now, in my experience. I personally prefer the well-balanced 2HEs like Codiax because I find I hit more consistently, and harder, with things at level or above.

I have to say as well that I went from a largely haralun weapon line up to glaes, and I've never looked back.

I think you've noticed incorrectly.
What has really happened is heavy weapons, and the higher damage stats they get from being heavier, have become fairly popular with the new weapon forging.
People are after the high damage stats, not the suitability. All else equal, in the current system, balance is generally better.
But for doing lots of damage, high damage stats + suitability > low damage stats + balance

This, is basically what it amounts too.
People aren't drooling over the suitability their drooling over that slice, or impact, ect.
I always try to go for a happy medium somewhere between the two, or stick to templates that are high balance. If only I wasn't too lazy to train QS.

Get a light mix glaes greatsword/double axe. Here is one I have...
A glaes double axe with a balanced blade is a two-handed edged pole-ranged weapon.
You are certain that it could do:
low (3/26) puncture damage
mighty (17/26) slice damage
great (11/26) impact damage
You are certain that the axe is decently (6/15) balanced and is soundly (8/15) suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.
You are certain that the double axe is quite guarded against damage (12/18), and is in pristine condition (98-100%).
The double axe is made with metal.
You are certain that the double axe weighs exactly 75 stones.
You are certain that the double axe is worth exactly 625944 lirums.
Same pattern as a greatsword.

Although it may take you awhile you can significantly drop the price on such weapons by farming the glaes yourself. Although like I said it may take awhile.

Check out the two-handed sword template in high carbon steel. Going from just memory I think I made one with reasonable balance in the 45 stone range with ~extreme slice. Should only cost 15-20 plat.
With the changes just around the corner, and career wipes happening, I'm not sure if I'm going back to weaponsmithing just yet or I'd offer to make you one. There seems to be plenty that probably will though.
