You tap a black ironwood katana sheath bound by thick damite wire that you are holding.
The sheath is comprised of lacquered ironwood slats which have been carefully fitted together and bound by thick damite wire. Green silk ribbons twist in a criss-crossing pattern leaving small diamond-shaped gaps where small ivory dragons are emblazoned.
You tap a cambrinth-hilted katana with a finely honed kertig-alloy blade that you are holding.
The cambrinth has been dyed black and wrapped with a thin damite wire to protect the hilt. Overlapping the wire is a thick layer of green silk ribbon that wraps in a criss-crossing pattern. The ribbon is knotted at the cap of the hilt, which remsembles a curled dragon, and the loose ends dangle freely.
A cambrinth-hilted katana with a finely honed kertig-alloy blade is a heavy edged type weapon.
You are certain that it could do:
low puncture damage
great slice damage
fair impact damage
You are certain that the katana is reasonably balanced and is fairly suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.
You are certain that the kertig-alloy katana is very strong, and is in pristine condition.
The kertig-alloy katana is made with metal.
You are certain that the kertig-alloy katana weighs exactly 40 stones.
A cambrinth-hilted katana with a finely honed kertig-alloy blade is a two-handed edged type weapon.
You are certain that it could do:
fair puncture damage
severe slice damage
moderate impact damage
You are certain that the katana is reasonably balanced and is reasonably suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.
You focus your magical senses on a cambrinth-hilted katana with a finely honed kertig-alloy blade.
The kertig-alloy katana is dim, almost magically null. A very faint pattern indicates its readiness to absorb Lunar energy.
It also sometimes makes sounds when you attack.

A common model would kind of defeat the purpose, no?
Besides, if the stats were any lower for a "common model", it'd basically be a normal steel bastard sword with a different name. Here's mine for comparison, normal steel, 36 stones:
A bastard sword is a heavy edged type weapon.
You are certain that it could do:
poor puncture damage
great slice damage
low impact damage
You are certain that the sword is reasonably balanced and is fairly suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.
You are certain that the bastard sword is moderately strong, and is in pristine condition.
The bastard sword is made with metal.
The bastard sword feels pretty light.
You are certain that the bastard sword is worth exactly 10000 lirums.
Roundtime: 8 seconds.
A bastard sword is a two-handed edged type weapon.
You are certain that it could do:
low puncture damage
severe slice damage
fair impact damage
You are confident that the sword is reasonably balanced and is reasonably suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.
You are certain that the bastard sword is moderately strong, and is in pristine condition.

Functionally, not a lot of room between this and a katana that weighs four stones more. And check out this bad boy (not mine, 48 stones, kertig):

The purpose? Only purpose I can see is to keep them outa hands of people without 5000+ plat. They could easily be released into the forge line, with differences of bastard swords. More weight, little more impact then basties, less slice then claymores. Though in all practicality it shoulda been more piercing and less impact, but ya we know that woulnd't be too good for a 2he.
I'm not saying release the same models that where sold in auction, would kinda suck to blow that price down. Not saying release the cambrinth ones into the market either. But having just "a katana" would be nice. (Hit the metal painters)

That and they look okay...reason against katans and that type of weapon is the lack of background support IG to make them more common. Even M'riss/Aesry/Ratha have mostly weapons that are built similar to the weapons on the mainland.

Dragonrealms takes place I think something like 10,000 years after GS4. GS4 now has Katanas so saying they are not historicly available is not true. The design could very easily still exist in some far away culture or at least as historical relics from those ages. All the katanas currently in the realms also happen to be made of kertig or glaes, so obviously if they ever are more commonly available they shouldn't be as good. Personally I think it should be lighter then a bastie though, and should have no puncture damage seeing as how you don't stab someone with a chisel pointed blade typically. The advantage I think they should have could be good balance and sharper edge with better construction vs. current weight caps, as in you could have one great slice at a lower stone weight then a bastie.

That's one theory. Others include DR being the ancient past, opposite sides of the world, parallel dimensions, and the most popular being David Whatley can't think of anything else to name the worlds he creates - confirmed by himself. Something happening in one game can not be taken as a precedent that it can, will, or should happen in the other.

Uh...I said IG background there chief, not RL background as I'm well aware that most places in Europe don't use paper screens.
Throwing spikes, far as I know these were quest/auction items only? Also fairly crappy and I wouldn't say throwing a spike is exclusive to one specific real-life geographical area.
Gnome gauntlets...sorry but they don't work like Wolverine's claws. One is an LE, the other is a shield and I believe the basis was some Gnomes being mechanically inclined.
Tower shields - Therengian for the most part with a heavier one available out in Qi. Seems to be more related to knights and heavy armor.
Origami - I believe this was the Rissan priesthood originally? Or was it just M'riss in general?
Comp Bows - IG not sure, RL thought this was more seen originating in Mesopatamia?
Combined a few IG and RL things there but I hope you can understand.
Also, DR is set 1,000 years in the future, not 10,000. Thus crossbows in DR and not in GS3 though no idea about what has happened in GS4. That being said, what happens in GS4 does not mean it sets history for what happens in DR even though it is set in the past relative to DR.

Heh, I swear...any idea of having blades shoot out from your wrist in the past 18 years has been influenced in some way by the whole X-Men thing. Don't take me as some fanboy of it or something, but I've had people flat out tell me that when I was using my gauntlets in DR.
I think Comp bows where simaltaneously developed in boy Egypt and China.
Anyways, you can see the point though. There isn't IG background to alot of stuff, like several I listed. The game just has them and just put them in there for our enjoyment. Its kinda like if it existed in medieval times (and others not so much), then its possible to just throw it into the game.
Even then, alot of the things that do have IG history...its only a few lines of that. Its' not hard to say "Traders from the distan isle of Hullabaloo Canek Canek just opened up trading ports to the islands for there now famouse katanas!" Thats more then alot of other things get if your that picky. That or just put a "blueprint" in the loot code of some monster and let some high end guy find it, and then do an update for Katana's in the forge table.

Re: Katana info? on 02/20/2005 10:35 AM CST
Why are people so hellbent on having katanas? Why not dip over to india first? Ever seen a Khukri? I want one of THOSE bad boys. There are lots of other deep and involved cultures with amazing/stylistic/bloody effective weaponry besides katanas. There are no samurai in DR. There is no Asia. There are no little old kung-fu masters who teach the ways of the foot and hand. This is a european themed game, and while you might have pointed out a few of the many holes/flaws/lapses in that theme/continuity, I still feel that to throw Katanas into the game would be as idiotic as throwing a gun in. Because it's disruptive to the game as a whole. The whole background behind the katana does not exist in DR, since we're a heavy armor wearing bunch of louts. We have damascened blades, but the entire purpose of a katana would be lost on the 'culture' of elanthia, since it was intended to blast through leather/laquere armor.
Re: Katana info? on 02/20/2005 11:51 AM CST
Khukhri's would be cool.
And how in the world are Katana's "disruptive" and like putting a gun into the game? This is a medieval based fantasy game, Katana's fall into the weapon catagory (swords) and the time frame. And you say their is no background to a Katana? There isn't one for most of the weapons! Whats the background of getting Crossbows, comp bows, broadswords, claymores, bastard swords, rapiers, throwing weapons, ballistas, catapults...on and on and on. Everyone one of these has a real world background.
The only point you have made here is you don't want people running around and acting like ninja's and samurai. I totally agree with you on that. Guess what though, it already happens...guys dressing up in all black and yelling weird stuff as they jump outa the shadows. Had to put up with other stupid stuff like whoever bought Galain shouting DragonBall Z crap when he casted spells. Ya its annoying, but having a type of blade isn't going to promote it anymore then what people are already doing.
You don't have people dressing up in kilts and trying to act like Scottish warriors cause they swing claymores? You don't (generally) have Paladins trying to act like Roman soldiers as they wield tower shields. Just cause your thinking of a stereotype doesn't mean everyone will abuse it.

And an IG reasoning. Heavy weapons? Good for cutting through the metal armor most people wear. Rapiers? Good for gentleman elite who duel for honor, not go out and pillage the countryside. Crossbows? Also armor piercing. Longbows? Ditto, while not in the manner DR has them used, they did do it. Most of the western weapons were designed and used for penetrating heavy, solid, rigid, metal armor. Easter weaponry, for the far east, was mostly used to destroy lighter armor, since there is a significantly lower amount of ore in that region, ergo no abundance of metalic armors. Which is why I say the heavier weapons have an IG reasoning, but the further east you go, the less likely such weapons become, since elanthia seems to have no shortage of metal deposits, as every region has metal armor for sale, and an apparently unlimited supply of it.

We are talking about adding Katanas too the 2HE weapons, not making a new class. And the ore stuff is really really pushing it to try to come up with something. You dig down enough you can come up with weird logic, like that. If I wanted too I could write a thesis on why War Mages should be able to unbind existence by tampering with aether.
Even then you contradicting yourself by trying to say Katanas where used for non-metallic armors...last I checked those exist in DR, along with bone and cloth coming out soon.
I was born once as a dying races last resort, I was strong.
I was born again as a weapon against friends, I was stronger.
I am now born from the dying wishes of my loved ones, and I'm pissed.

Not really. What does the majority of the realms use? LC, Plate, HC. Even guilds with a 0 penalty in leather are moving away from it. Ergo most guilds use metalic armor. Ergo most people. I did not ever say 'no one uses non-metal armor'. And as far as 'wierd logic', if you're simply going to attack the reasons I've given for the cultural irrelevance of such katanas, then I'm out, cause I don't feel like defending myself from personal attacks.

Fine, here's an idea...
If/when the new races are introduced, give a funky, multi-syllabic and -consonanted name. within the rules of the new racial language, to a weapon that any student of Japanese weaponry would instantly recognize as being a katana. That way, those that wish for the functionality of a katana can have them, and those that feel that the actual name of the weapon prevents it from being in genre don't have their kilts tied in a twist about the whole thing.
Deal?
Now can we please just go back to discussing how really bloody awesome that weapon was? Please?

Politics is supposed to be the second-oldest profession. I have come to realize that it bears a very close resemblance to the first.

Think I could have this altered into a katana? Don't see why not.
A dragon-pommel bastard sword etched with ancient runes of power is a two-handed edged type weapon.
You are certain that it could do:
heavy puncture damage
severe slice damage
great impact damage
You are certain that the sword is fairly balanced and is reasonably suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.
You are certain that the bastard sword is well constructed, and is in pristine condition.
The bastard sword is made with metal.
The bastard sword feels pretty light.
You are certain that the bastard sword is worth exactly 104000 lirums.
Giant Mosk trampled into the room! You fall over stunned!
