Please take the discussion of the making of katanas to the appropriate folder in Life in the Real World. I've included a link at the bottom of the post to direct you to the correct folder.

>Some people here really do have knowledge in what they are talking about. The guy talking about how the edge of the Katanas is usually tempered differently along with a harder steal was right on the money. etc.

Sorry, but all the information in the world doesnt mean jack to the actual design philosphy of current game developers, which does in fact trump realism. I think katanas should be rare to preserve their 'mystique'. As far as cutting through plate armor, who cares? In DR, a Paladin wearing massive plate armor can be stabbed to death with a butter knife.

Things comparing fencing techniques a few post back come from the fact that I am also a sabre'ist on the Texas A&M Fencing team (wish them luck at nationals guys though I won't be heading down). Things I've pulled from history facts are due to the fact that my major is Japanese.

Ive commented on this before, but here's another.

1. im sick of this thread. its gone on for weeks.

2. I dont understand why everyone is arguing about katanas in real life when we are at the DR forums, when the topic should be about in game concepts.

3. in regards to the person that asked if we were weapon smiths or master's of katanas...im not by any means a master of the katana or a smith, but my brother is and ive assisted him making many swords, including katanas, claymores, maces, and more. We have made swords out of tempered steel, tin, multiple types of stone, and many combinations of other metals. I do know a LITTLE about katanas.

4. in regards to bammboo armor. a lot of people seem to think bamboo armor was just a tree cut down and made into a shirt. Its more than just that. They would fire harden it, they would mix light metals into, and reinforce it with certain types of stone. Katanas are made to slice through this, but strength and accuaracy was needed. Like i said before: Not all, but many Samarai were trained to aim at weak points such as the armpit, and definately at the legs(back of the knees)...once they are leveled to the ground, its finished.

Oh...and ill mention that i also assisted my brother and my brother's mentor in creating hand made/forged chainmail, light plate, and leather/wood armors. The wares were sold at medevil festivals and whatnot. I was an assistant(much like the assitant that helps the forger in DR kinda).

Real life shouldnt be compared to the concepts and programming of a fantasy medievil game. Only my opinions and experience, nothing more.

Provided one uses information from a reputable source, rather than simply looking at the musings of know-it-all's who post on message boards ;)

Meh, not like its going to die until someone has something useful to post on here....which is a rare occurence. This is the most action this board has gotton. Dunno why ya so eager to see things die, ya don't have to read em.

I was born once as a dying races last resort, I was strong.
I was born again as a weapon against friends, I was stronger.
I am now born from the dying wishes of my loved ones, and I'm pissed.

This thread is really starting to make me laugh now.
Yeah, a lot of the information about katanas is true and a lot of it is exagerated. But why are people getting so wound up about what a katana can realistically do or not do. Then they go play a game with magic carpets, fireballs and Elves.

Put katanas in the game as light, well-balanced basties and let people use them or not.

You must be uber cool and be in the Katana club or your just not the cats meow. Personally I think the Lannaahasasa-lapoapso is the best one. ya should get one of those if ya dont wanna do the bastie thing.

>In DR, a Paladin wearing massive plate armor can be stabbed to death with a butter knife.

Well, someone with enough skill (ranks) with a knife could. Not straight through the heart, and not by chopping him in half (limitations of DR messaging). But by a poke in the groin, one through the eyeslot in his visor, one under the armpit, one to the back of the knee.....

I always like the image I had of the use of the misericorde. which I think translates to something like 'Mercy heart' or some such. In a medieval arms book is was described as long slim blade carried by knights to deal a merciful last thrust to a fallen foe, often through the shoulder joint of his plate. So in my mind I see that after bludgeoning your opponent with your longsword, maybe impacting/cutting some armor enough to cut him, otherwise just battering him into submission, you then use a weapon that can achieve some penetration.

If it were me, personally, somehow thrown into a situation that I had to pick a weapon to take on someone in plate, it would be some form or horseman's pick. Something with a lot of weight and a chisel tip that might punch a hole through him before he got a good slice at one mf my exposed joints.

I don't claim to be an expert on anything. It just seems logical. There are an awflu lot of folks that feel to make a point they have to take an extreme stance, of that believe any one thing they read or hear (especially if it supports the point they want to believe). Can katana's chop cars in half? Probably not, not logical. Could some of them have been exceptional blades? Of course. Could they cut through plate? Well, think about it. Sometimes yes, they might get penetration, but its unlikely one piece of steel is going to always slice through another piece of steel like butter unless force/direction/shear conditions are just right. There is always a possibility (tornados imbed pencils in telephone poles) But on the other hand, a skilled swordsman is not going to strike dead in the center of your chest armor, he will aim, and sometimes succeed in hitting a weak point.

But the folks who want uber-l33t sword of doom have to put that myth aside as a genre tool. It works in the right movies as a cool touch, just like in the right action movies you ignore the fact that noone acknowledge count the number of bullet holes sprayed in the wall doubles or triples the magazine capacity of the weapon being used.

Wow, good steal beats lead?..... O, that's right, it does. Actually, flesh can deform some rounds, and bone can splatter them (while being shattered in the process)

I know smart-butt answer. Actually it was a pretty interesting demo, but what I want to see is a close-up of the impact point on the blade.

How much strength and agility does it take to get a minimum RT on a 34 stone claymore? They are dismal balance and reasonable strength attunement. I have 28 strength and 30 agility right now, and still get 4 second swings.
