I'd like to give these a try, but I've been told they have a special constriction type of attack. I've also been told if they land this special attack, all you can do is wait to die.

Of course, I know GM's aren't quite THAT evil. Anyone know how to break free of the hold if the boa succeeds in grabbing me?

Also, any idea on their true skill range? Elanthipedia says (270?-?) on the monster's page.

Ok... so maybe they are. Consider it the optimistic side of me poking out tonight. Does that mean it really is a Dodge-Or-Die attack?

The river boa info is completely wrong. When I was fighting angis hatchlings in throne, I ran over to boas. They taught me 0 combat skills. This was around 180-200 ranks if I remember correctly. It's also possible the boas in throne are different. I wasn't learning anything so I left before noticing any constriction attack.

Ok, as an update to boa's... They did seem to swarm, getting 3 on me in a matter of 2 mins tops, and after killing 1, and third replaced quickly after.

As a WM, with 220-240 in relevant combat skills (Mo, Parry, Evasion, Shield, Armor, etc) unbuffed, 1 was able to hit me, although not too badly. Fully buffed, I was able to dance with 2 as long as I didn't attack (to avoid last maneuver penalty). 3 getting to melee, and I start to get slaughtered rather fast.

With 240 Weapon and 35 agility, unbuffed I was not landing many attacks, and the hits weren't very good when I did hit. With a capped SuF (+Agility) I was able to land most, if not all, of my attacks.

Also, the mana there was pretty crappy, and since I was constantly with 3 and getting hurt, I didn't get to stay long to test TM. I can say that they did teach TM quite well at 270-280.

They did attempt to constrict me (only when I was fully buffed dancing with 2, due to my short visit there), but I was able to parry it.

So, 270 seems to be a fairly accurate bottom cap to start there, if it weren't for the swarmy-ness. Personally, I'd recommend 270 + buffs, or 300ish if non-buffed. Just my opinion though. This is also in Throne City, if that matters.

I dug through my logs. Here are my stats when i was hunting river boas. The log is dated 08/03/2009. August 3rd. I don't have my ranks handy. Unfortunately the EXP window is not logged.

Strength : 20 Reflex : 21
Agility : 20 Charisma : 13
Discipline : 20 Wisdom : 12

Here is a log from river boas. As you can see, I could easily handle 3, and I killed them just as easily.

Were boas bugged before? Is it possible I was in the "easy" section? Where did you find the hard boas at?

Thanks!

You swim southeast, moving with the current.
[Faldesu Inlet, Shallows]
Clusters of brown cattails clog the water, leaving scant few spaces available for wading explorers to trudge. The current beneath the surface is routed and rerouted, forced between the shoots of these water-dwelling reeds, but nonetheless black and thick with swirling mud. Strong, deadly, and deep water lies further to the west, beckoning but cordoned off by rows of hardy plants. You also see a river boa, a river boa and the southern shore.

Wow, that's really insane. My stats/skills are as follows.

Strength : 45 / Reflex : 35
Agility : 35 / Charisma : 30
Discipline : 35 / Wisdom : 35
Intelligence : 35 / Stamina : 35

Shield 193, Evasion 227, Parry 236, Multi 227

And it required full buffs (Capped SW/SuF/YS) to dance with 3, and even then I was getting hurt.

I was in the Boa's at Throne city. As far as I know, there are only 3 rooms that they spawn in between the 2 Heggi Boars locations (and I fought in 2 of those rooms). Maybe I just suck that bad, or there was a major change between these two occurances.

Stance is always either 100E/83P/1S or 100E/83S/1P.

I had Parry up to 8/34 in very short order, while trying to kill and run. Just from trying to kill, before I realized how bad of a job I was doing, TM was at 7/34 too if I recall correctly.

2 careful appraisals, to give a stat/skill basis. I'm also re-posting my stats/skills. This is an exact log (didn't even remove the "...wait" or the "you are still stunned" messages) from the entrance of 1 boa, until the point where I died and departed. Granted this was unbuffed, but should still show enough info.

Also, it did grip me right off the start (still no idea what the command is to break it), but that shouldn't have made THAT big of a difference.

The "Shaky" in the combat message is due to the bug with death sickness. Apparently, that doesn't go away until after you log out, and I hadn't died in 3 days. So I know death sickness was not involved in any way.

I did think about that. I first thought it had tiered rooms, but this was not the case. The character I tested in boas is a commoner, so if it was flex based on circle, this would make sense.

I thought they removed the flex system?

Nobody farmed boas for a thousand plats an hour or had epic fights over who would control the river area, so they probably got overlooked.

Ha. Very cool! I suppose its a good thing they still flex, although not for my commoner.

Well, after having easily danced with 3+ boas in the past, I visited them yesterday. For the most part, the trip was fine. But then, suddenly, a super boa appeared. It appraised at way higher than any before it, at "truly skilled."

I think these guys just vary a tremendous amount in abilities. Anyhow, that one made short work of me (with the normally ineffective constrict attack) and my buddy and I probably won't be back anytime soon. I have 190's in combats. They were all easy until that one showed up.

This thread got me curious, so I also went to boas. Unfortunately I wasn't able to go there with cleared skills, but they apped similar to Rossman's bristles and just below attic orc raiders:

Taking stock of its offensive abilities, and defending with a stout short sword, you are certain that the river boa is definitely less skilled.
