The description has this to say: The lava drake is a creature of raw incandescence drawn straight from the molten heart of Elanthia. That's caused me to envision it as a bright orange-white. On the other hand, there's this later part of the description: the construct...is protected by a multitude volcanic rock scales that cover its molten body from snout to tail.* So maybe it's like a grey volcanic rock.
I'm considering crafting a saddle for myself, so I want a leather that looks nice.
* Yes, I've bugged the typo.

This is kind of what I had in mind when designing them. So super hot and bright in places, but "protected"/covered by darker scales, with the lava shining through at the interstices.
The lava drakes, when dead, cool off and look kind of like a pile of rocks. So their hides are probably something like this...

Why do creatures made of rock/lava have hides? It's a mystery! But plenty of other stone creatures do, so I guess it makes sense in the context of Elanthia.

I just assumed it was a generous definition of the term "hide"
Uzmam! The Chairman will NOT be pleased to know you're trying to build outside of approved zones. I'd hate for you to be charged the taxes needed to have this place re-zoned. Head for the manor if you're feeling creative.
