I think you should reconsider the "wasting time" comment, i don't know that i'd be interested in joining a game that advertises its use as wasted time.

The luxury car and fine wine of MUDS. If your going to invest your time playing a MUD, you might as well play the very best one, even if you have to pay a few bucks to do so. You get what you pay for.
............................................................................................................................................................
You could also put in something about "Massive worlds, unique combat, crafting, and magic systems with well developed content and lore. Unique guilds and races."
The Waste your time was definitely tongue in cheek, but I agree probably inappropriate.

My take on rolling them all together:
The luxury car of MUDs. The most advanced combat, magic, & skill systems. Craft gear, open shop, own a home, explore for hours. Hundreds playing in the most complex world of law & lawlessness. If you're going to play, you may as well play the very best.
253 characters.

I like that a ton! I added "open a shop" instead of "open shop" which I believe was a typo.

I have to agree, not a fan of the first sentence about luxury cars. The rest of it is great though. Since it's listed as a MUD on a MUD website we probably don't have to use up our character count reiterating DR is a MUD either. Maybe mention the room count cause our game world is pretty good sized.

Keep in mind this can be changed as many times as you want.....
Some other examples.
Is your MUD boring and terrible and Free? Guess what Dragonrealms is awesome. Yes its a little pricey but you get what you pay for.
Hey Dummy! Are you wasting your time on a free stupid MUD? Guess what for the price of a medium pizza each month you could be immersing yourself in an awesome world of enchantment.
The Finest Wine, the Best Steak, the Luxury Car, the MUD to play. Yes it costs a couple of bucks, but lets be honest, you get what you pay for.

Yeah that's not arrogant, it's confidence in your product. Just go read all the other ads, they are boring and the same.
Here's the deal. The arrogant/confident ad is going to make people click it just to SEE. You can direct it to a landing page that has all the cool things that is DR because that is impossible to fit in 255 characters. I say a landing page because the DR home page is not a good page for people to hit the first time (It should be but that's a different thread), that page is designed for players that are already playing.

Create chatter... positive/negative, regarding the blurb it doesn't matter, we're talking about a MUD, we just want people to TRY the product, if they try it and are into MUDs do you not agree Dragonrealms is the best out there? If you don't agree Dragonrealms is the best one, why aren't you playing a different one? Get em in, Hook em' and call it a day.

I think that without a lot more characters spent explaining that it has been actively developed all that time, saying it's been around since 1996 could actually hurt us. How many games from 1996 would you pick up now? (That you've never played before.)
It IS a positive, I know, but I don't necessarily think it will be perceived that way in such a small blurb.

No, it's definitely an inside information deal, as Eyuve explained it. Hurts me, because I think it's great that we're from 1996. But we'd need to put in more details.
Continually Improved since 1996...
Constantly upgraded since 1996...
I still worry about it.

I think if we can address the opening statement, we'll have a winner to go with and see what happens.
The penultimate MUD? The past, present, and future of MUDs? (Yeah, I know, too long.)
I almost don't like saying the ultimate or penultimate, though. Everyone on there thinks (or will claim) they're the best. It might be worth chopping that entire first sentence and spending the characters elsewhere.

As a consumer, I would be looking for a descriptor that is a bit less colloquial than "ultimate" - it's often used to simply say "we're the best" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcL6DwSufMI) - who wouldn't make that claim.
I liked the "The most sophisticated MUD" idea. Whoever came up with that was right on point!

I would avoid the word "penultimate." It is not a fancy way of saying "ultimate," "best," or "definitive." It simply means next to last.
http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/penultimate
1. next to the last <the penultimate chapter of a book>
2. of or relating to the next to the last syllable of a word <a penultimate accent>

I'd focus on more tangible not-up-for-debate value-adds, like how long DR's been around and how many people contributed to it.
Join a complex world of law & lawlessness today created with 15 years of dedicated development by dozens of GameMasters and hundreds of players. Craft gear, open a shop, own a home, hunt for treasure, discover hidden lore, and adventure with friends.

This is a good point. It's also more respectful if we choose a more specific adjective than "best".

Something about zombies or pets would be neat, tough to choose what to say when there is so much you can say.
Craft gear, open a shop, own a home, own a zombie, heal wounds, raise the dead, command magic, be a hero or villain, amass a fortune, hold back an invasion, or do it all. Be anyone you want in the most sophisticated, immersive game you will ever play.
Or something completely diff.
"I could literally go on forever with what you can do in dragonrealms and not be able to convey just how sophisticated, immersive and massive this game is. Instead just go here, www.dragonrealms.com/about You won't regret it."
Or if you make the link on top mud sites a good landing page, just say click the link, you won't regret it.

Right. I know it's advertising and we're supposed to say the best (no idea why I put penultimate, since I like to call people on using that word incorrectly all the time), but it's a given that everyone is going to say they're the best, so I think it's a was to use the limited space we have on that and keep it subjective.

>>I'd say something to promote the strong, GM'd roleplay that happens, since the blurb almost entirely talks about mechanical stuff to do.
I struggled with this. I included "rich world of intrigue" in part to cover it without going into detail on roleplay -- which I felt could be off-putting for those who don't know what it is.
>>I'd say we're close to perfect. How many more characters do we have to work with?
Don't know if you mean mine or Tev's (for the record, no personal attachment). If you do mean his though, some comments.
<<Join a complex world of law & lawlessness today created with 15 years of dedicated development by dozens of GameMasters and hundreds of players. Craft gear, open a shop, own a home, hunt for treasure, discover hidden lore, and adventure with friends.
"Today" is awkwardly placed.
The development wording sounds like players develop the game, which might not attract people who think they have to contribute something to development as a player.
I don't know if I'd include "hunt for treasure" or "discover hidden lore" as these are not very strongly developed systems (like the crafting, shop, and home systems). Also "adventure with friends" is pretty generic. If I read it I would be thinking, "I can do that in any MUD." Doesn't mean it can't be included, but I definitely wouldn't end on it.

When I made my previous suggestion, I made REAL sure I nixed that law/chaos inference. This is not DnD, and has no basis at all on DnD. (Closer to Rolemaster, really).
I'd really rather not see alignments in game.
It would, however, amuse me to see the outcome of that. From about 8 years of DnD, I can tell you, a lot of DR characters are probably not the alignment their players claim they are.

I don't think law/chaos explicitly implies alignments.
It just means that there are some areas that have laws, and some that don't.

Hrm, definitely weird! It's only 248 on my Word for sure.
I'd suggest either a) remove a word, maybe that will help (could remove "rich" or "intrigue"), or b) changing the ampersands to "and" -- this would still only put us up to 254. Could be it's upset about the special characters. Sometimes forms are weird and throw up the wrong error.

I'd suggest either a) remove a word, maybe that will help (could remove "rich" or "intrigue"), or b) changing the ampersands to "and" -- this would still only put us up to 254. Could be it's upset about the special characters. Sometimes forms are weird and throw up the wrong error.
Or you could contact them.
