You can still do that with the new boards. Just set it to 1 post per page under the Options.

Use the Collapse/Expand option to collapse the list down to post titles (like the old board). Then just click on the post title you want to read, and click it again when done. That's what I do.

The biggest problem I have with the new forums is that the subject line/link that you click on to expand and read a post doesn't change color after you've read it. And I'm probably not explaining myself very well :(
I have the posts pop up unexpanded, so it's basically a list of post titles that you click to expand and click to collapse the post. My problem is when you collapse the post, it's still the same color as the rest of the posts. Gets sort of hard to remember where you were sometimes when there's a long list of posts.
I hope that sort of made some sense.

I think they are, as I automagically got into the new ones without any prompting.
And, uhm, the reason I hadn't used them is..... I HATE THE NEW FORUMS!!!

Ok...for everyone else that doesn't like this "feature", here's what I do and I hope it helps:
Set your default to Collapsed
Open the board you want to read
Hit Expand to expand all the posts
Read the ones you want, close them when you're done or when you've scanned one enough to know you don't want to read the whole thing
Rinse and repeat
This allows you to cut down on the clutter, keep track of where you are, and scan threads before you get sucked into silliness. ;)
Also, you might try lowering the default number of messages displayed on a page if it's too much. I think mine's set to 20 or 25 and that seems pretty workable for me.

Well I have to say that when the new forums first came in, I didn't enjoy them much either. Of course I thought the switch would be back then, so I started using the new forum to get used to it...and found after changing a few settings that I really enjoy the new way. Maybe give it some time, tweak them each time you try them, and see what is good for you?
I really enjoy two things: blocking the occasional author, and being able to read 1 page of messages at a time - being able to read a page at work, close them, and come back without losing any of the new posts I hadn't read yet is a huge plus - especially when I was testing something at work and everything would crash <g> I would lose all those new messages.
Anyway, I'm sure it will take some time, but I hope there aren't any major changes to the new forums as they are now...I for one really like them.

Then lets say you only read 5 before your are forced to leave or your computer turns off etc. Well, the other 15 message you DIDN'T read will no long be new. They will already be marked as read. Its hard to remeber what post you were at in what foler some times.
Also, the new boards need to more compact. They are way too big. I can see only a few folders at once and its really an eye sore.
Willing to let us vote on the back ground color? I like the old light colors. The new darker colors just dont feel right. Perhaps a way to pick our own colors for out own preference?
Can we get more options on how to customize the boards to our liking?

Falk, if it helps you any, they have a "bright" option in one of the preferences screens that's much brighter and easier to read.
I know it's not the same as being able to design your own color palette for the boards, but it should help a bit.

When I started using the DR AOL boards, I hated them (cause I loved GEnie's boards).
When we went to the web, I hated the new boards (cause I'd gotten used to the AOL ones).
When we went to the HTML boards from the Java version, I hated 'em (cause I knew exactly how the java stuff worked and it wasn't all that slow for me).
Now that we're overhauling the HTML boards to the new boards... right. I hate it. :> But I won't dislike it for long, because it won't take long to get used to them. And any board system that allows IGNORE AUTHOR has got to be loved! ::Grins::

Grumble... in my day we had to walk up the hill both ways in the desert while it was snowing- even during the weekly hurricanes to check our bbs- and you delt with the trolling posts and were thankfully you got any posts to begin with!
