Okay, lets see. I've been playing DR for going on 7 years now. Started playing just before my 12th birthday. (Yes I believe I was the youngest player in the game at that time.) Being as young as new to RPGs I picked a name that now, with as much experience as I have with DR and RPGs as a whole, I'm surprised ever got past the CM. I mean lets face it. Flyingarrow? Come on now. What kind of name is that? I can't exactly call many people out on having a whacked out name when I've got one thats just....well...It just doesn't fit, ya know? Now my character isn't circle old by any stretch of the imagination. 7 years and he's only 27th circle. (So sue me :) I got side tracked for about a year at one point, and then by another recent break from the game, both due to financial reasons.) Sure it wouldn't be that big of a deal to to just go and reroll him and give him a new name. How long does it take for someone to train up to 30th circle nowadays? Maybe a month? Two? I've got a two commonors on the backburner that have enough skill to beat Flyingarrow to a pulp in seconds. But I'm getting sidetracked.
I would like to have his name changed, if for the simple fact that I was young and ignorant of the ways of roleplaying at the time. However, changing his name would be like getting myself a sex-change. Flyingarrow is so ingrained into him that it would almost impossible to actually go through with changing his name. There are enough people that know my character that it would be a shock to see the same features, speech, beliefs, attitude, character, etc, with a different name.
Not sure if anyone is getting the drift of what I'm saying. I get to rambling on after awhile.

It depends a lot on how much you can play. I got 13 circles in about 10 days back when I played alot. I've also gotten a char from scratch to 4th in one day when I was really bored RL. But that takes a lot of time each day. I know one person that got a moonie to 70 in about 5 months. If you can devote 10 hours a day, you can hit 30 in a month. If you can only play 2 hours, then expect it to take a few months.

Not sure if you got what I was actually trying to point out. When I'm bored with backtraining and trying to TM, I'll log on one of my other characters and train them. Probably one of the reasons Flyingarrow is so far behind. I have multiple characters in prime that are better than 10th circle (Empath, Moon Mage, Thief, Barbarian, two Commoners{skill-wise in relation to the Barbarians}). I also have three characters over in Plat that are greater than 10th. All that time spent on so many characters, can obviously take time away from training my main character.
I guess what I'm actually trying to get at is that way back when before we had this version of the boards, when Solomon was talking about name changes I had made a couple posts about wanting to change my name. Now its not as easy that I want to change my name, its all the effort I've put into developing the character. I may not be able to play but a couple hours a day, but those hours are hours well spent.

Every now and then, the subject of bad names surfaces from the depths of the forums like a burp surfacing from a bad seafood meal. People vary in their opinions about precisely what is and isn't a bad name, but they tend to concur that the GMs aren't doing enough to curb bad names (except for the people who own the "bad" names in question, who tend to be very unhappy at the criticism.)
So... here's a batch of 100 names. They are intended to range the gamut from completely, unquestionably appropriate to completely, unquestionably inappropriate. I came up with them, but pretend you are a GM and you just saw them come out of the mangler.
Without peeking at everyone else's answers (hey, that's cheating!) tell me... which ones will you accept (no matter how grudgingly), and which ones would you reject?
I'll post my personal opinion after a couple days.

These are my personal responses to the "good names, bad names" list. Even if I mark "accept" on a questionable name here, I recommend against rolling it up -- after all, please bear in mind that, just as players vary in what they do and don't consider acceptable, GMs will vary in what they do and don't consider acceptable. For example, Emminemm set off warning flags all over for me, but at least one person passed it through here as acceptable (someone exposed very little to the hiphop/rap world, I would imagine!) Also, if I see it happen, I will hit you with a lightning bolt, and you will deserve it.
Reading the comments other people put was sometimes a bit like looking at Rorschach inkblot test response. Satan's Temple? Santa's Temple? I didn't intend that name to sound like either one of them! (Wonder what that says about me?) It's just a reference to the computer game Might and Magic VI, as is "Newsorpigal".
One thing to note -- as hated as they are, compound names ARE acceptable, as long as they do not violate another guideline. Compound names are often confused with phrases, however. I'm not much of a grammaritician (you can tell because I can't even spell that word) so I went looking around to try to figure out the exact difference. Here's the best I could do -- maybe someone else will be able to phrase it better than I can? (Sorry for the bad pun!)
- A phrase is a group of related words that does not include a subject and verb. (http://webster.commnet.edu/grammar/phrases.htm)
- A phrase typically functions as a single part of speech in a sentence.
- An adjective and noun together do not constitute a phrase because they function as more than one part of speech (specifically, an adjective and a noun.)
- A noun and a noun together do not constitute a phrase because they are not a group of related words.
- A noun and a verb together do not constitute a phrase because that is something with a subject and a verb.
- If you can't add spaces to it and turn it into part of a normal sentence, it is not a phrase.
So something like "Lightofmylife" or "Thesnaillover" is a phrase for the purposes of the GemStone renamer, but something like "Houndslay" or "Merrycow" is not.
One thing to be aware of -- when I reject a name, I really can't just reject it because it seems "off" to me. If I upset a player by rejecting a name, that's not very good customer service to that player, no matter how gently I try to do it, even when it is good for the game. Except in completely blatant cases (Xxxmistyxxx, for example) I routinely check with other GMs when I see questionable names in order to make sure that it is not a quirk of my perspective causing me to think that the name is unacceptable. I need to be confident that I can explain to any SGM why I rejected that name in a way such that the SGM will agree with me about the rejection. Having a senior GM undo a rejection of yours is a bad thing.
The "accept/reject" list here is how I would respond if I saw these names rolled up at 5 AM and there wasn't even one other GM online that I could confer with before making a decision. 90% of these names would cause me to check with another GM for acceptablility/rejectability.

I thought about doing a commented name-by-name accept/reject, along with notes on the inspiration for each name on the list, but I only made it through 6 names before I realized it would take literally hours for me to complete it.
Here's the commentary on those 6:
1. Purplegrass - ACCEPT
This name could be seen as unacceptable to some because it evokes drug imagery. However, I don't consider it to be obvious and strong enough in this case to make the reference unacceptable. I would want to keep an eye on this player to make sure that their behavior didn't correspond to their name, though.
2. Tsantsatemple - ACCEPT
I was surprised at how much people disliked this name! In the original, I suppose it might have been derived from "Satan's Temple" or "Santa's Temple", but I didn't think of either one when I was putting it up. As someone else noted, there are two references to the computer game "Might and Magic VI" on this list (why not, it's a fun game) and this is one of them, the Temple of Tsantsa. While Santatemple or Satantemple would merit certain rejection in my eyes, I consider this reference obscure enough that most people shouldn't have their gaming experience disrupted by it.
3. Squirti - ACCEPT
Possibly sexual, but it doesn't out-and-out cross the line. Like Purplegrass, I would want to keep an eye on this person to make sure that the behavior did not match the name.
4. Fireleafbow - ACCEPT
It's a bit hard on the eyes, and I won't claim I love it, and I bet I know what this person's favorite alteration ever would be. I don't know whether to look forward to telling him that fireleaf wood is only good for shields and staves, or to dread it. Either way, it isn't a phrase, even if it's annoying.
5. Calere - ACCEPT
This was intended to be one of the completely normal names on this list. It's one letter off Calera, a town in Alabama, but that's not good enough cause to pitch it.
6. Tuberose - ACCEPT
For a pretty plant, it's got a really ugly name, but it shouldn't be banned simply because of that. It is an object that exists within the game, but I think it's infrequent enough that it should not cause a serious syntax problem for players.
