Would first names finally be able to to contain apostrophes?

Well, the relevance in my eyes laid in the wording of your first question. Earlier I read "will I just have the ability to change my last name? On the spot, just make it something else?" as "will I be able to," and copied the original post by Solomon on that specific part of the issue. I suppose I wasn't reading deeply enough into the question, and I apologize if I misinterpreted it. As far as the "who" part, it was just a bonus because it logically follows the general ability to do so (i.e. "So this ability can be done, but what if I only play prime/pay for premium?"). Again, sorry if I read your questions incorrectly.
>>And as I said, please don't reply to this. It's bordering on off-topic already and I don't want this thread closed, I just wanted to offer a suggestion to the GMs and this seems like the most appropriate place.
I won't, but I'll say there are good and bad elements in it which probably wouldn't get killed if it were started as its own thread. However, I'm no board monitor/GM, so per your request I won't discuss. I'll just ruminate. :P

Ok, my questions are about the purging. I got no problems with the last name changes, I actually like the idea very much. My main character would indeed love to roleplay his "family" in a much easier way.
We have 3 or 4 different accounts, that all include In-game family, as my RL family all play together. However, at this time, only 1 account of ours is up, and the others have been closed for quite a while. One is at least 6 months, the other probably close to 2 years.. Money issues. So when doing the purge, will those accounts all be erased, or is there some way to protect the accounts, and not mark them as inactives for deletion?
-Master Ndin, praying for a job, to get his account back up.

My account was inactive for some time and I asked this question when I called to reactivate it. I was worried about my characters because of the warning I saw somewhere about characters being eligible for purging after they've been inactive for 90 days. They told me that while they were eligible for deletion, an actual name purge hadn't been done since 1999. If another purge WAS performed, it would only apply to character names that had been deleted, but not inactive ones who still existed on account.
I'm not sure if this would still be the case, but its what I was told.

At the other end of the scale, I have an account I canceled a while back and have since decided not to reopen. There are a few names on it that I don't exactly have a burning urge to use again, but I don't see any reason to keep other people from using it.
What steps should we take to prevent our names from being purged or let Simu know that an acount will not be reactivated?

Let's not worry about name purges until the time comes to discuss them.
We always have, and always will, give you plenty of advanced notice about when a purge will happen and what criteria a name has to meet before being purged.

Please tell me you're kidding, Solomon. After next Thursday, no character created in DR will be able to have a last name of their own devising, and instead, will have to marry and/or adopted, thereby assuming someone else's name? Elanthia is not 16th century Japan and its adventurers are not the bonge of the era. Surnames are a huge part of character identity and RP, and the removal of the ability to create one for your character (and not simply borrow someone else's), shuts far more doors than it opens. It would be very nice if there was at least the option available to go to an inn or town hall and purchase a 'unique' last name. Tack whatever restrictions on it you want. Give it a circle requirement, a citizenship requirement, a monetary requirement, anything. Just allow it to be available so that every third person in Elanthia doesn't end up related to someone else. It scares me to think that had I not returned to DR last week, and had instead waited a week or two more, an integral part of my character's background would be unavailable to me.

Apparantly you didn't read all of his post, bud.
Eventually you WILL be able to just pick a name. The mechanics for assuming an existing name just may or may not be available before the mechanics to pick a unique name will be. Won't know until it happens, he was just letting us know it was a possibility.
Relax. Read the whole post THEN vent, if there's anything left to vent about. ;-)

I'm curious why the ability to choose a last name at character creation is being disabled now. Why have a period of 'down time'? Why not wait until the entire system is coded and release them simultaniously, so there's no break in continuity?

With names being a little hard to come by now, it's easier to create a character if you only need one original name instead of two. Since they don't yet have the mechanics put in for locking down your last name, if they allowed further last name choosing everyone's last name would be fair game. If they waited to implement this until they had the locking mechanics, then the problem (trouble naming new characters) would have persisted until then.

Ergh. I went through the whole mess of posting that, and then promptly neglected to mention that I was unable to unearth Solomon's original post from earlier, and didn't recall it well enough to remember if there was further detail to it. So, my apologies for coming off more abrasively than I should, and questioning judgment on what should have been a common sense call. Thanks for setting me straight, Krinahd and Solomon. :)

In my opinion, no. Since this announcement I've sat in Jadewater watching new characters roll out, and I haven't seen any problems with unoriginal last names or mis-spelled last names. So, if it is a dire situation, it's for different reasons.

And in Solomon's opinion, yes. Given who has better data, I'm gonna go with Solomon :-)
They're trying to remove barriers to someone generating a character and getting in the game. This change addresses that in two ways -- you only have to come up with one name, and now for that one name you have to come up with all those last names out there are going to be available. So after sweating it out coming up with that new moniker so they can PLAY THE FREAKING GAME ALREADY! they don't get the "Sorry this name is taken" message as often.

Heh I don't know about everyone else, but when this change rolls in I'm rerolling some of my characters to not have last names. I'm also looking forward to changing one of the last names that I really hate.
On the issue of people taking last names as their first names... I personally don't have a problem with it, since the last name is so often not noticed anyway. However, it WOULD be nice that if it really bugs you enough to see someone running around with your last name as their first, you'd be able to "lock" your last name so that no one can use it as their first. I can envision a lot of people rolling up novices so that that doesn't happen.
Another thing that occurred to me. Since last names will be useable for first names, will first names be useable for last names? IE if someone has the name "Maragold Allannyea" (for example), would some other random person be able to have the name "Allannyea Maragold"?

I think the answer to that is yes, since last names in and of themselves will be for RP purposes only, with everything in the game based off of just your first name.

Unless you really want to, don't do this yet.
I'll see if we can get some kind of mechanics set up to "clear" a last name that you don't want anymore. I'd hate to see someone reroll just to get rid of their last name.

I believe Solomon stated if not just recently then before that others could take a different last name only with the current owner's consent. Probably will be a fee at a town hall or some such thing.

Can we please be updated with what is going on with the last names to date? I believe in the official post, we were instructed that the last names would be reinstated, with nifty new abilities, by DR2. Hate to quibble over details but... DR2 is here... where are the last names? Is it even a concern still? I for one am anxiously awaiting the ability to pick a last name again (my characters feel somewhat incomplete without them). Any information, preferrably positive, would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I'm just going to be quiet on this whole topic....
Though for the record, I think Starbucks would be an acceptable name if the S were dropped, even though it was on Battlestar Galactica, the name can be derived from two common words, Star and Buck, whose to say a child can't be named that.
I think for the most part the whole OOC issue should be on offensive names, MotherRaper backwards is just wrong... However I don't see a problem with me being called Striderr, the main reason is I don't RP my character as anything like the guy from LOTR, I see it as the Guy Michael Bolton in office space, sure he had a name that was known, however he wasn't that person.
Hmmm guess I did have something to say.
P.S I think Billsgate would be fine if the name was Billgate, or even Bilgate.

I think I'd rather a familiar-ish name belong to a person designed somewhat after the character who's name they're altering. Kandolf should be a mage, not a Trader. Bilbe should be a Halfling, not an Elothean. Your name is your first impression in DR (whereas it is your appearance in real life) so I think it is much more important for your name not to be jarringly different from the impression you want the rest of your character to give.

Well I am a Human Ranger, however that's just cause in any fantasy game I'm usually a human, I hate being another race, no idea why. Eh what can I say, at 18 I was so unimaginative, however, the name Strider wasn't as well know since there was no deluge of people knowing now that the movies came out.

That is OOC information, and has absolutely no bearing on the character they are playing. Just cause the name is similar does not mean they should have to be like the character the name reminds You of. Might not even have got the name from them.

Fighting with a bunch of archers in Geni.
"Hey, it's shoot GENI, not shoot GEN!"
[Arcath] "Public Service Announcement: Please shoot at the archers and not at Arcath"
Your mind hears Gelicast thinking, "shoot the gelv cyclops, not gelicast"

<< [Striderr] the name Strider wasn't as well know since there was no deluge of people knowing now that the movies came out
I'd wager that half the DR population still knew who Strider was before the movies came out.
<< [Brabs] That [similarity to a known name] is OOC information, and has absolutely no bearing on the character they are playing.
True, but players have gut reactions to names the same as we have gut reactions to people's appearance when we first meet in three dimensions. Perhaps it is not fair, but "Aragron just arrived." evokes instant reactions before I can look and see that the character is a female Gnome Moon Mage.
