It's a bit ... confusing? That elementalism's Ask and Discern simply have no information about spell slots instead of telling you explicitly that it has no slot cost.
This isn't unique to elementalism. Zero-slot spells in general don't list their spell-slot cost. I agree that it would be nice if they mentioned that they were free for the asking.
