I dabbled with another (free) text based online game for a week or so called Nodeka. By all means inferior to DR, of course, but their version of a "script check" caught my eye.

It was fully automated, and basically jumped around the game randomly testing people. Due to the small population, being tested every several hours or so was a given. It used the same method as those "real user" verification codes often seen online, i.e.

INSERT GENERIC SYSTEM MESSAGE HERE
PLEASE RESPOND WITH THE FOLLOWING NUMBER

***...*
.................
*****........
.................
*****........
.............**
.............*
.............*
.............**

To which one is expected to answer "52".

Replying correctly even awarded a small amount of experience, for the trouble, I guess.

I don't see why this, or a spin-off of something like this, couldn't work.
