Many moons ago there were alterers that changed eye color and skin pigmentation. We've also discussed having the salon in Leth re-open with some simple options once more has been added to the features system.
The features system needs to be expanded and rewritten. Right now we can't add more feature options because we literally have no more room.
This was something that SGM Jeremael was working on, so as projects are being reassigned, this will need to be one of them.

Good news Reexa. Personally it makes sense that you can cut and dye hair without magic, just not grow it.
Speaking of features and enhancements, how about special hair styles you can only get from the Salon?
A dark brown Zoluren marnet squeaks with excitement as it pursues a small insect across the surface of the water. A final lunge brings the hapless creature into the marnet's mouth where it is rapidly consumed.

...that won't get messed up with ppl ARRANGING your hair to another style.
Just like IRL, I'd be really really mad if someone messed up my hair. Okay, so my wife would probably be that mad, I'd just pull it back again..but if my wife pays $100 or something exorbitant for a hairstyle and then someone comes along and musses it up, it'd have to be consent :smirk:

Re: Various Alteration Questions on 11/13/2005 08:14 AM CST
Feature alterers have been suggested before, and the answer has been no way, no how. Something to do with the code. Maybe...someday.
Spellbook cases ARE alterable, not sure about spellbooks. Thrynz will do them. This costs several hundred platinum.
>tap case
You tap a polished black leather spellbook case reinforced with gold corner-molding that you are wearing.
>look case
Conditioned to an almost mirror-like finish, the well-oiled handsome black leather spellbook case has been designed to allow the compartments within to rotate in place, keeping all but the exposed compartment secure from the elements. Finely beaten gleaming red-gold handcrafted to fit each of the reinforced corners further protects the case and its contents. The intricate locking clasp that seals it is carved from bone in the shape of a pair of ruby-eyed intertwined serpents devouring each other's tails. It is currently closed.
Spidersilk cloaks are alterable by the following alterers to my knowledge: Snidely, Stiltskitter, and Droughtman. It costs several hundred platinum as well.
Hopefully this helps!

Colored Gold in Alterations on 03/17/2007 03:41 AM CDT
I saw that Blue Gold is on the rare material list as something that would be required to be added to an item in an alteration. I'm curious of two things. First, why? There are two types of blue gold. The blue gold found naturally is an alloy of indium and gold, but the blue gold commonly used in jewelry is simply an iron and gold alloy. Second, can we use other colors that are gold alloys? Purple, green, white, pink, red, rose? I understand if Purple wouldn't be allowed, because I realize Aluminum is hard to mine in a usable form. I'm also curious what color some of the Elanthian specific metals would make in an alloy with gold.

Blue gold IG is considered rare meaning you have to provide it for alterations as it's closely tied to the Prydaen race. At least that's the explanation I've seen given before.

Blue gold is considered an extra-terrestrial type of mineral (ie, it falls out of the sky and thus would be rare like Maulem said), and (prydaen) legend has it that it's a direct gift from Eu.

I can understand blue gold being rare. I'm still curious about other colors of gold, and what some of the Elanthian specific metals would look like as an alloy with gold. A lot of the metals specifically say they don't look good in jewelry, but I know one of them said it is often used in jewelry.

Typically, anything that changes the size (small belt-worn sheath to greatsword sheath) is right out. Also, the base item needs to be fairly similar to consider a description change.
At one point, I had a flour sack. I submitted an alteration to make it a turnip sack, and wrote up the TAP and LOOK to indicate that it was used to carry turnips (including a stitched image of white and purple turnips). The net result was that in the TAP and LOOK I could call it a turnip sack, but the base item had to remain "flour sack."

In case you haven't read the calendar, I'll be available in the seacaves tomorrow evening at 9 pm EST for any OOC questions regarding alterations that you may have. I'll be there for an hour (not sure exactly where, but probably the cabana), so if you have questions about materials, wondering about a specific alterer, or are struggling with the wording for an LTB scroll, come on by!
Oh, and if you want to just come hang out while you're working on your own designs, you're welcome to do that too.

No standard alteration will change weapon stats of any sort.
If it's HB/HT already, sure. Otherwise, too bad.

It seriously depends. Some are free. Some are 10-20 plat. The silversmith charges something like 200+ plat.
Depends on who shows up.

I don't remember which alterer it was, but I had work done on a branch framed knapsack at a fest in shard 4 or 5 years ago. Had it made bigger id love to have more work done on it if he would be willing to show up.
Also does getting an alteration at the fest count toward the 120 day limit?

Alteration Newbie on 07/23/2009 04:18 PM CDT
So Ive been around a long time, but never a premie until now, and never had an alteration, hopeing to get one someday.
Ive read the guidelines here several times. But its the materials that kind of confuses me... just for an example if you wanted to have some Nightsilk or Spidersilk added to an item... would having a "Nightsilk Pouch" or a "Spidersilk Backpack" count? and if so would said item be lost in the act of altering?
Would the above apply to inperson alterations as well as LBT alteration scrolls?
Also, please forgive me if Im not really asking the right questions... like ive said I've tried to read the guidelines. But im still pretty clueless.
Thanks

Nightsilk and spidersilk are both materials that aren't considered rare, so it's doubtful you'd even have to supply them at all. In theory, the concept you're talking about is sound. If you want something with stormsilk for example, you'd need to provide an appropriate amount to alter into the new item which you're requesting. Yes, we consider anything offered to be used in alterations as fodder. If you want a twilight sapphire in your new necklace, you'll have to donate one that you currently have in your possession.
>Would the above apply to inperson alterations as well as LBT alteration scrolls?
It applies to both, yes, though some in-person alterers are more lenient than others as far as materials go.

Don't worry! This is actually a good opportunity for me to plug our Alterations 101 session during the Mini-Fest. Feel free to stop by the Private Grotto of Magma Falls on Thursday, August 6th at 11pm EST for some lively and informative discussion.

Alteration Question on 07/28/2009 08:16 AM CDT
Do alterers usually change the noun of the original item for an alteration? Something like a tanned cowl, could that become a top hat like a similar hat that is somewhat old but is actually head armor?

>Do alterers usually change the noun of the original item for an alteration?
Sometimes an alterer will consider changing the noun, but the essence of the item must remain the same. You can sometimes turn a pack into a bag, or a gown into a dress.. I don't see it as very likely that a cowl would be able to be changed into a hat, because a hat is not typically armor. You aren't retaining the essence of the item.
Thanks!

If you want to change the noun, try to include an example that they can go look at or recognize. Sometimes they just don't understand what you're asking to do and all they see are the nouns (and obviously, if that doesn't mesh then they have to say no).

Re: Alteration Question on 07/29/2009 12:04 AM CDT
you could have like... a leather helm fitted underneath an elegant top hat.
or a hard leather top hat- a hard leather helm has been fitted with extra pieces piled high and fitted with a rim giving it the shape of a top hat.
thats along what'd i'd work with to get what you want.
only noun i got changed was some shard 'chain' to chain 'armor' like 8 years ago.
lot of the alterers will do what they can to work with you, some follow the rules to the letter though.

Think about it with another example, a sabre and a scimitar are both medium edged weapons. But you couldn't alter a scimitar into a sabre because they function differently. Whereas the aforementioned backpack into a bag example might work because the two words are closely synonymous.
