Been a while since I did this so wondered if some kind person could answer a question for me? In the alteration guidelines on the play.net site it says that rare materials need to be provided for an alteration. In the case of things like atmospheric gems (yavasite etc) that are provided in the form of a single gem, could the alterer work this into something (a ring, an armband, etc..)? If so, do I need to provide anything besides the gem?
Many thanks!

I've never seen anything posted that says it couldn't. On the other hand, the game is wierd, so you can't always judge that. I had one embedded in some gauntlets, and it works just fine.

The base item.

Those atmo gems are tricky.
In my experiences, they are definitely alterer-friendly, but you have more limitations about what else you can do. The number of space you have for your tap description has to be shorter to accommodate all the color options your gem can provide, and you might lose other stuff already "scripted" into the item. Last year I had a balaclava altered with one of those gems, and Uwresari was up until that point adding a tagline READ to each person's item. When my item was being done, he had to include it in the look description because, as it turned out, the READ option and the gem just didn't play along.
So keep in mind that you might have to be flexible when getting something made with those gems.
As an aside, I think only Uwresari is able to alter with those gems, right?

We don't generally do mechanic changes through the LTB scrolls, purely descriptive things (15/15/15, TAP, LOOK and READ). So we can't take an atmospheric gem and add it to some other item; those sorts of alterations are better done with live alterers.
