>The portals will remain open until our next meeting to give people a chance to explore the area, but they will no longer be open 24/7. They will open for special events and meetings, and will remain open for a short time following each (a few hours for events, a day or two for meetings).
Does this mean that access to the gift tent, bungalow, etc. via premie portals is restricted to meeting times and events?

Access via the mammoth is difficult. I don't own a boat and the trip to Ratha via Crossing or Haven is very time dependent. I wouldn't mind using the mammoth if the only access wasn't on Ratha. In my opinion, this is very restrictive and doesn't represent a benefit at all. The restriction is disappointing considering the price of a premie subscription. Fang Cove is very cool and I certainly appreciate the easy access via portal this weekend, but restriction to my benefits doesn't make me very happy. Given the time I have in game recently, I have to question value of my subscription.

Re: Premium Updates-Having to go to Ratha to get LTBs on 02/12/2012 08:26 PM CST
I don't have a private boat, nor do I have a pocket MM who can randomly gate me to Ratha whenever I feel the urge to see if I want to pick up an LTB. I have played DR for a very long time and can count the number of times I have been to the islands on 1 hand.
It seems not very lovely to me to have to now take a trip to Ratha any time I get the urge to walk through the ltb place. Since catching the Kree or the other one and then riding over.. then again trying to catch the boat back to the mainland is a huge investment of my (at times) very limited DR time.
I don't understand why it is necessary to basically limit people who still are old fashioned and actually travel places by walking there from their earned LTB points at any time they desire to use them by making them go to Ratha when they otherwise might never desire to go there or don't want to wait for a once monthly meeting for it to open and then maybe even miss that because their work schedule is insanely bad.
Could an alternative way be considered like a moongate/portal that goes ONLY to the bungalow and only allows you to go back to where you came in a premium place in crossing like the Amusement pier or in the Veranda? Though of course it could also exist in any premium only place, like the place in Hib too.(something like the portal that opens for guild meetings in the TG in Crossing and only lets you go there and back)
Thank you! Linett

Have to say I'm disappointed too.
An easily accessible premie perk hunting ground was a nice sounding perk, another inaccessible island hunting ground and less access to cashing in my benefit points is far less exciting.

I'm not sure why everyone's so up in arms about it.
For years you couldn't get there at all if the portals were down, and they were down frequently. Now at least you have another option, even if it's a slow one.

The LTB bungalow, monthly gift tent, merchant alteration cabana, and new rotating shops are all going to be in Fang Cove, accessible via portal once per month or via ship to Ratha and mammoth to the Cove the rest of the time. As is, I can't access those services whenever I want unless I take to the sea. I don't think some of my premium subscription benefits should be restricted to a couple hours of travel time or a once a month opportunity.

Can there be an LTB item which would allow one to temporarily open the meeting portal for a person with a week or so cool down?

While I understand that Fang Cove is recently discovered and supposed to be hard to access, the travel time needs to shrink a bit more and sooner rather than later. If people can't get to Fang Cove with a minimum of hassle, it will be underused, which is a shame since all that hard work went into it.
Even playing a gating, astral plane traveling moonmage, Fang Cove is a pain to get to, and the time involved has stopped me from visiting a few times already.
Suggestions to make travel a little easier:
Add sea-mammoth routes to Haven and Crossings. Set up a few short term RP events with Merelew and baby sea-mammoths that the locals can help raise via feeding etc (something similar to the mechanics used to help build new areas in Fang Cove), perhaps even a name the sea-mammoth contest. This would help reduce some of the travel time involved.
Discover a Grazhir shard:
Set up the shard in a non premie room/area attached to Fang Cove. Also have this area non-teleport warded so moonmages can help others access Fang Cove.
Given the existing lore, the shard could be found in the ocean where the shipwrecks are with the underwater undead, and then the MoonMage guild could move it to a more secure area.

Less a matter of "I go frequently" and more a matter of "If I feel like it". They have removed "If I feel like it" from the playing field.
Now, if I just so happen to have 900 LTB points and want to get an alteration scroll I have to wait until 1) The portals open, or 2) I have to try and find a way to Fang Cove(which is arguably equally as annoying).

For the price of my premium subscription, $40/month x 2 accounts, I think I should be able to access my premium priviledges when I want and not have to look at the calendar to schedule that access or spend several hours trying to get to my access. Quite honestly, while Fang Cove is very cool, it doesn't offer me anything training-wise that I can't find anywhere else and with a whole lot less hassle in getting there. As I said, the mammoth isn't the issue, access via Ratha is. When, why and how many times I access the premium area isn't really any of your business.

Not really clear on what's going on or why (really that's the bigger issue) but not happy with what appears to have happened. I never really visited the caves all that often, and when it came to trying to attend the meetings, my timing rarely works with it. And now this having to make a long(er) trip to visit the premie shops (LTB) if I choose, or wait until a meeting comes around just sticks in my side. Not really, truly a BIG issue, I'll just have to live with it (I guess - or forget out the LTBs altogether) but this does annoy me - a paying customer.
Re: Premium Updates-Having to go to Ratha to get LTBs on 02/12/2012 10:19 PM CST
I work 12 hour shifts on a swing/rotating day/week basis. I might not make a premium meeting for 4 months at a time, depending how my work schedule happens to fall versus when a premium meeting happens to be. Since returning to DR a few months ago there has only been three times I couldn't access the meeting portal to walk around and see if I wanted to spend any of my points.
My work schedule also makes catching the boat in port, riding it all the way to the island so I can walk around the LTB tent thing on the off chance something catches my eye nearly impossible to accomplish in one, easy, stress free trip. It would likely mean two or three days from Shard to Ratha and then back again. I don't LIKE the islands and have zero interest in spending three days in Ratha trying to catch a boat.
I pay a LOT for premium and I have for a very long time, I don't think access to the benefit I have EARNED by giving simu lots of my money whenever I so choose to have access without major travel/drama is really too much to ask.

Re: Premium Updates on 02/12/2012 10:34 PM CST
There's some neat stuff in the Seacaves, so I hope there are plans to salvage some more of it. Something like that hidden shrine (I think it was?) that was pointed out during a premium meeting a while back might be awkward to provide justification for moving (so it's a shame I never got around to going back there), but maybe the Bacon Man could relocate to the Amusement Pier? He probably doesn't quite fit in with the aesthetic for Fang Cove, but he was amusing.

<<If people can't get to Fang Cove with a minimum of hassle, it will be underused, which is a shame since all that hard work went into it. >>
This x10.
Its not a problem for me in plat, because as soon as it was discovered i got my MM to Throne to get JJ to set there, and then took the mammoth out there, for my top 6 characters who have mostly all found things they can hunt there. My little characters won't be going there for some time, as they need to have access to more of the town-type amenities. Or my empath, who can't hunt the constructs there until she trains up to garg-level first.
The problem i've found is in prime. Where even though I have my own boat, the difficulty to get there is a hassle. IF the boat-route had a route set, it wouldn't be such a big deal, but its not an easy thing to do.As there is nothing to do on PC-owned boats, basically for me travel is something i prefer to "set it and forget it", the way routes work to everywhere else. The same reason more people in RL fly rather than drive somewhere, or take cruise ships to places. They prefer to spend the time at the destination, rather than the trip over. And, again, unlike cruise ships in RL, there is NOTHING to do on your own boat unless you sit there humming, folding origami, or equally boring activities.
Another issue is not having the furrier and gem/shops open 24/7. For characters like mine, who hunt until they have a full bundle, then go into town to sell, to avoid character corruption and bad stuff like that, its a hassle.
The only other problem i've encountered in fang cove is that the serpents teach my barbarian both leather and evasion, but not her primary weapon. And she has more in evasion than her weapon. But that I suspect is a barbarian issue, not a critter or fang cove issue per se.

Re: Premium Updates on 02/12/2012 11:34 PM CST
Additional issue, with the shops rotating - I liked being able to get a closet in the wagon that sold pets and closets for my various characters homes when I could afford to get one, as they all like to have some sort of storage. Now its not even like the shop on Mer'kresh. And its not like I can make a closet with the crafting system yet. So rather than being able to access a shop when my schedule dictates, with Fang thus cut off from ready accessibility, I will have to spend hours to go ALL the way to Fang to even see if the shop is open in order to purchase it, unless I just leave a gimp in Fang to log on if I want to see which shops are there. Which is a big chunk of time for whichever character I'm getting the furniture for. I mean, I don't buy them every day of the week. But when I have coins available, I like my chars to have furnished apartments :-)
I keep a complete list in notebooks of how each of my chars homes are furnished <or not>, some don't have homes yet, some haven't found the proper place to live <a couple of my dwarves I intend to live in Hib, but don't have the fighting capacity to fight anything out there yet>.

no, this was in reference to the gemshop, furrier, and repair shops in Fang Cove, which all close at night.
Which means a LONG trip to go sell bundles, gem pouches, etc. after hunting in Fang once they close the portals.

Cool. I can survive being annoyed and a bit less happy of a PAYING customer, with the Seacaves issue. In all likelihood, I'll never visit this Fang Cove, so frankly, if this stupid decision is final, far as I'm concerned they could almost just close it altogether. ..I said almost

I'm a bit amazed people visited the seacaves that often. Maybe I was missing out on something in the past?
>>The problem i've found is in prime. Where even though I have my own boat, the difficulty to get there is a hassle.
Depending on your timing, getting there via seacow from Ratha or personal ship from Crossing can take the same amount of time. Getting to Fang Cove via boat from Crossing isn't hard at all and can take 30-40 minutes.

Don't wait until you have a full bundle, then. I'm not sure what benefit there is to having a full bundle to sell than two half-sized bundles.

<<Getting to Fang Cove via boat from Crossing isn't hard at all and can take 30-40 minutes.>>
ahem. your idea of a hassle and mine are different then. 30-40 minutes to get somewhere.... no thanks.
Particularly if I hunt primeside in gremlins and with a thief character I prefer to open my boxes in an urban environment <no such thing in Fang>, to take advantage of my guild bonus, and it takes me a very long time to get back to "civilization".
Whereas if i go hunt in rossmans for boxes, i swim down the river and I'm in Haven in what, 1 minute, I can open 'em, and swim back there in 2 minutes and go hunt some more.
Where the portals come into it is providing a quick way to get there to go hunt. Not having them open will mean it will once again be a long way away, in much the same way as other areas of the game are underutilized because they Take TOO LONG to get to/back.
Have you even heard the complaints of players from M'riss that would love to have high-level hunting in other provinces? Its the same issue, except dressed in different colors. If something is made too long to get to, it doesn't do anything to popularize it with the masses.
I'm sure the people over at SIMU want MORE people to go premium, not less, and popularizing the place means making things more convenient for premium members, not less. What's the selling point of a place nobody wants to get to because of inconvenience in time to get there? It could have the greatest critters this side of Lanival's pet dragons, but if it takes a half hour to get to, nobody will go.

But you can do things in the meantime. In the time it takes me to get from Crossing to Fang Cove, I can lock a few lores, most of my magics, etc. It's not like I'm sitting there staring into space. It's also not like people, on average, play DR in 30 minute increments. You're more likely playing for 2+ hours, based on my anecdata of seeing how long people stick around during sessions.

I don't know how many times the GMs have to say that the development of Fang Cove is a work in progress. While I'm sure the GMs could easily just put a seacow at every port in the game, at the same time it seems like they want to have a bit of a storyline buildup before more transportation options become available.
Maybe we should look at it another way: how long is "too long"?
Based on these threads, it seems that removing the "YOU ARE THERE INSTANTLY" aspect of a portal is causing people distress, let alone the fact that getting there from Crossing via personal ship, which takes 30-40 minutes, is too long. So what's the sweet spot?
But you can do things in the meantime. In the time it takes me to get from Crossing to Fang Cove, I can lock a few lores, most of my magics, etc. It's not like I'm sitting there staring into space. It's also not like people, on average, play DR in 30 minute increments. You're more likely playing for 2+ hours, based on my anecdata of seeing how long people stick around during sessions.
I don't know how many times the GMs have to say that the development of Fang Cove is a work in progress. While I'm sure the GMs could easily just put a seacow at every port in the game, at the same time it seems like they want to have a bit of a storyline buildup before more transportation options become available.
Maybe we should look at it another way: how long is "too long"?

>>let alone the fact that getting there from Crossing via personal ship, which takes 30-40 minutes
Except very few have personal ships and it doesn't seems likely that many people will be able to get them any time soon. So your point about personal ships is meaningless. For most people, its waiting for when a ship is going to Ratha, riding that ship, waiting for the mammoth and then riding the mammoth. That is at minimum over an hour, and in most cases around 3-5 hours. This is just getting there, not returning.
>>I don't know how many times the GMs have to say that the development of Fang Cove is a work in progress.
The point is, why make this change before there are other ways to get to Fang's Cove. If they want to make the rotating shop hard to get to fine. LTBs are another matter, we should not have to go way out of our way in order to get them when we want.

I'm sincerely curious here.
How often do people go to the LTB bungalow, let alone sea caves as a whole? How immediate do they need to buy something that they couldn't wait until the monthly meeting portals allow them fast access?
I ask because the only times I went to the sea caves for non-meetings were for random Jisi raffles and picking up a second or third monthly gift for the heck of it. I never really visited the shops, since they were the same shops since forever, and in my few years of playing as a Premium+ person I only got two things from the bungalow. So it's not like I'm personally always going to the bungalow to look at things or visiting the same merchants that I feel like have been there since bone and cloth armor first came out, but it's possible that I'm just not seeing that there is a big demographic of players who do these things.

I already put down my opinion on this.
Again, it's not a matter of it happens frequently. It's a matter of, if I feel like going, I at least have the option to.

Also, keep in mind Lyneya said they weren't done with everything, so I'd hold the panic attacks until we know a bit more about what the final picture will look like :P

">Does this mean that access to the gift tent, bungalow, etc. via premie portals is restricted to meeting times and events?
Access via portals? Yes.
Access? No - you can ride over on the mammoth anytime." ~Lyneya
I have always liked the idea I could wander into that meeting portal, whenever I wanted. Grabbing a gift from the tent, any given day of the month, was never a concern. Actually thought that was an actual perk of being a premium subscriber. Do hope some more thought gets put into this 'access' term, before it is all said an done.

I agree completely. Sadly, I wasn't able to see all the work done on the Cove and I doubt I will anytime soon.

Let's say it one more time just to get it out there again. We're not done yet. I didn't drop this area into the game and plan on walking away from it. I've been working on this and planning it for years. There are long term goals that I'm shooting for to keep the area active, growing and more appealing to more people as time goes on. Beyond that, my hope of having other GMs get involved in its development is already happening -- you're already seeing Lyneya move on stuff and others are working on things too. I understand you're uncomfortable with the idea of waiting for your benefits, but please have patience. It's barely been out for a month and it's already growing and expanding on a near weekly basis -- INCLUDING travel options from opening up player ships. We're not done yet.
I also want to mention that I'm a little surprised to see how shocked everyone is over the Seacaves. Several years ago, NEWS 2 4 went into affect; Rinae and I regularly closed the portals after meetings and only opened them temporarily for events (alterers/merchants) and meetings. More recently we've let them stay open, but as a result we've started noticing some of the same old problems with doing so coming up again. Maybe some of you are newer and don't remember that period of time, but this certainly isn't a new thing.
The Seacaves as they existed facilitated easy abuse. It let you bypass normal travel times so that you could trade coins, items or services in the blink of an eye. This was never an approved "perk" of being Premium and was always grounds for a warning if repeatedly abused. We've planned the demise of the Seacaves for a while.

IIRC all the portals save the Crossing portal closed on a regular basis in the past. Is the intent that this will be true in the future or will all portals close and the only access will be via sea travel to Ratha and sea mammoth to Fang Cove? Is there any concrete reassurance that you can give other than "be patient, we're not done yet"? Pardon my rather brusque cynicism, but I've been playing DR for a long time and I've heard "be patient, it'll happen" so many times, I have a hard time believing it any more. Seriously, it's not the transport via sea mammoth that is disappointing me, it's the bloody time involved in getting to Ratha if you don't have a player boat and I don't have a player boat. As Leilond's player so aptly put it;

I can respect that, and to be honest? I don't blame you for that gut instinct. I will just say this -- You haven't heard it from me before, and I wont ask you to be patient for very long. We prefer to make our releases with events whenever possible, so I encourage you to track Keishalae down next time she logs in and tell her what you think of her "help" -- politely, mind you.. she's known to have a temper.
She was last seen in Fang Cove.

I was hoping it was ongoing, should've said that in the post, you know how we go for the throat at the slightest sound of bad news...
Temporary issues, Trouble maintaining portals because of distance or something, or Keishalae was just being a witch.
I've been taking my displeasure out on the representative for a few days actually..

FWIW: The seacaves were not always closed and in the past were always open (at least through one portal). So, some people gamed that "easy travel" system and the seacaves were closed except for events and through one portal. I was never much of a fan of punishing the majority of the premium players for the poor judgment of a few premium players.
Why did I use the seacaves a ton in the past?
The main reason I used the seacaves was to visit people and gather when travel was hard. The area of the seacaves was very enjoyable and holding gatherings there was a really nice perk. The game (at least to me) revolves around a sense of community and I enjoyed the premium community that would gather and visit, RP or just horse around.
Once the seacaves closed that was lost and I do not think for the better. At least right now it is hard to envision gathering regularly at Fang Cove, although I understand that it is still a work in progress.
I just wanted to give you my perspective on the whole "Well, the seacaves aren't always open now, so why are you complaining!"

Due to my IRL activities I only play a couple of hours most evenings. I do not visit Ratha as I do not want to spend an evenings time on riding the boat. Then spend another evening riding it back. If folks are abusing the portals why not just leave one (Crossing) open so folks like me can get to the premium area in a reasonable time and not have to ride the boat?
