I'm pretty sure the teardrinkers are following their mark even while incapacitated. They might still be incapacitated (say, unconscious) when they arrive in the new room, I'm not sure. It seems like they shouldn't be able to follow until they wake up, though. Or maybe that could become a way to shake them? Incapacitate and leave. Or something.
