...I mean I'm sure a non-aquatic shockwave would still sting just as bad but it's messaging is a bit amusing when they're in the non-underwater spaces of the hunting zones.
Rearing back, a nacre-plated Torbisan decapod flares a pair of brilliantly colored palps. It ratchets its clubarms in, close to its face, a shuddering groan accompanying the buildup of strain and tension on flexible chitin and tendons. Everything seems to slow as several events occur nearly simultaneously -- eyestalks snap downward, focusing on you. Swimmerets position behind to brace the creature in place. The clubarms groan with an increasing pitch, and suddenly lash forward, too quick to follow!
With a thunderous CRACK, expanding shockwaves of displaced water roar outward, bubbles of air filling the empty space, and the twin clubarms land with perfect synchronicity precisely side by side, crushing into your chest and abdomen! Before you can even register the blow, the empty cavitation rings collapse inward for a secondary impact, superheated with a brilliant flash of light!
[You're very beat up, off balance with opponent in better position.]
Uzmam! The Chairman will NOT be pleased to know you're trying to build outside of approved zones. I'd hate for you to be charged the taxes needed to have this place re-zoned. Head for the manor if you're feeling creative.

I had the same thing happen to me last night in the room just past the ripplegate. The character I used is a tough gal, but I had to run her to Yrisa since I couldn't locate any empaths in game!

>>Could you copy the room description this occurred in? The decapods do have an underwater and above water description of the attack. It's possible the room was flagged incorrectly.
It was the first room past one of the ripplegates into the hunting zone. I think they're all above ground.

>>How about the decapods can't use their special attack until they get to pole range, i have had multiples hit me either JUST as i entered the room or just as they spawned in it, literally immediately.
That would be an immense help! The decapods "snap cast" attack is a rather antiquated ability that makes hunting overly draconian. Anecdotally, I've been having flashbacks all week of hunting frostweavers on Aesry in the late 90's when a snapped ice patch would likely result in a broken neck just simply meandering room to room.
If not incorporating a pole range requirement, may I humbly proffer adding a preparation time and message to them so you have a chance to react before your chicklets are sprayed across the room in glorious fashion?

>Can you specify which of the ripplegate hunting zones you are referring to? There are five, and each has at least one non-underwater room.
None of the rooms in the Volcanic Valley area seem to be flagged as dry, even the first one in the big bubble. I can't get PYRE off (Your spell fizzles from the water.) or do a piercing whistle (You try to whistle but manage only to blow a few bubbles.) in any of them.
