Earlier this morning I had a half-baked idea for a new type of merchant for pay-events. After mulling it over a bit I figured I'd post see what kind of interest, if any, the GM's might have incorporating such a thing.
The general crux being this new type of GMPC merchant would use the crafting system to make tools/weapons/armor/etc. This merchant (who I've been affectionately referring to as "Master Crafter Skillet" in my mind) would work exclusively with raw material you provide him and craft it into an item that currently exists in any of the master instruction books. Behind the scenes he'd have enough ranks and techniques to masterfully-craft the most difficult patterns using impossibly difficult material. I.e. I hand Skillet a 3 volume glaes ingot and he makes me some masterfully-crafted thin sewing needles.
I appreciate there might be some measure of trepidation behind this suggestion, but I also have a few ideas for provisos to help balance this service.
First off, he would only work with patterns that exist in the store bought master instruction books. He wouldn't handle rare instructions at all. Hawkbill, sterak axe, pointed pliers, etc, instructions being out of the question. If it isn't available from a shop open 24/7 in game, he wont touch it.
Second, this service would be highly expensive. With a scaling price based off difficulty, he would command an exorbitant fee for the hardest patterns combined with the most challenging material. Therefore, while you could elect to use his vast skills and mastery of crafting, he's going to charge you through the nose for it. This would encourage people to seek out more reasonably priced crafters (players) while still allowing those who don't mind paying (a lot) extra a chance to get work done.
Lastly, this service would come with some hefty restrictions on it. 1 Per Account EVER for example, doen't sound terribly unreasonable. As well as only providing work for a moderate number of people, no marathon list clearing. That would encourage people who were chosen to invest serious time and thought into what they want made, as well as help prevent abuse of the service.

I'm not sure how he's working in Prime, but that's what he does in Plat, only without the one time only ever restriction.
Uzmam! The Chairman will NOT be pleased to know you're trying to build outside of approved zones. I'd hate for you to be charged the taxes needed to have this place re-zoned. Head for the manor if you're feeling creative.

Is that a fact? I honestly didn't know how he worked in prime as I haven't been to his sessions. All I had to go off was what I read about him in a summary of his work on the wiki and the FEST ALTERATIONS command. I presumed he just customized already existing expensive/rare items similar to Keishalae, not fabricate new items from raw material. That's good to know, hopefully he's the same in both instances. Thanks Tev!

I want to 1000% stress that it's possible his functionality/purpose is different/expanded in Plat. I was just intending to highlight that as a concept it's been released in at least one instance.
If you look at the Plat events on calendar.play.net, you'll see how he worked for Plat so far.
