A couple of alchemy questions on 10/18/2014 03:27 AM CDT

I'm doing some organizational stuff with alchemy on elanthipedia and need a couple questions answered.

1. Both jadice flower and jadice pollen are still available to forage. Jadice flower currently works as a reagent for external limb wounds recipes. Does jadice pollen still have a purpose or is it just a legacy item with respect to alchemy now?

2. Are the various old recipes like plovik tea, aloe balm, lujeakave elixir, etc. not able to be created? Able to be created, but non-functional? Completely non-functional?

For the GMs:

Is it possible to get a physical description of the various healing herbs? Right now only a handful are partially described. E.g. jadice flowers are gold but we don't know what the rest of the plant looks like, and blocil berries are deep purple but what do the plants/flowers look like? Most of the rest of the herbs we don't even have any descriptions listed at all. Other useful information would be things like descriptions of natural habitats. E.g. plovik grows in wet damp areas like swamps or pools.

Aside:
There is now a nifty sortable table with foraging details that draws from the individual herb pages located here for the time being: https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Healing_herbs

That said, there's quite a bit of information that is missing, and I suspect some of the stuff listed is outdated. Feel free to update the various herb pages with correct information. :)

Just a legacy item now.

>Are the various old recipes like plovik tea, aloe balm, lujeakave elixir, etc. not able to be created? Able to be created, but non-functional? Completely non-functional?
I can give you an "educated guess" on this one. If you had access to the old version of the herbs and they were already in the state you needed them in (crushed, dried, etc.) then I believe you could still make the old finished products. And, I believe they then should also be functional, as all those old items are still in the system, we still see them drop from critters.

Next time I get a critter-herb, I'll see how far along I can get in making up a potion from it. It's an interesting question...

So in my quest to avoid doing laundry...heh...I spent some time updating each of the individual herb pages. You might pop over and take a look at some of the DISCUSSION pages I left questions on when you get a chance.

>Is it possible to get a physical description of the various healing herbs?
I did pull out a few more descriptions from one of the IG books (https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Book:IcwHH), but they weren't really comprehensive either. And obviously, all the new herbs are not in there. I might get motivated during the HE quest to wade through all the physical items that have the different herbs on them, pull things from those. Or, a GM could be awesome and just post an official list we can copy/paste from!

While I was at it, I also added the RECALL HERB message to each of the pages, along with notes about how it could be updated if there is an error so that it matches the current Remedies information. You know. In case an enterprising GM wanted to get those updated. ;)

Ithor root can be foraged. I'll have to check on the others listed as not foragable.

Yea, all those that are marked as not foragable are actually able to be foraged up. I updated the individual pages, but it wasn't refreshing on that main table. I don't have enough wiki-fu to figure out why not, so that was one of the questions I put on the discussion page...heh.

On the pedia I put a complete list of the herbs usable right now in a guide under remedies. Those herbs are as follows:

Next herbs : If you read chapter 1 of your remedy book you will find this list in that book. I would copy this section out and put it where you can get at it easily.

A short list of herbs known to general problems is provided:

Red Flower - minor healing properties over the entire body
Blue Flower - minor restorative properties over the entire body

A short list of herbs known to heal external wounds is provided:

Nemoih Root - external head wounds
Jadice Flower - external limb wounds
Plovik Leaf - external chest wounds
Nilos Grass - external abdomen wounds
Georin Grass - external neck wounds
Hulnik Grass - external back wounds
Sufil Sap - external eye wounds
Aloe Leaf - external skin and nerve wounds

A short list of herbs known to heal internal wounds is provided:

Eghmok Moss - internal head wounds
Yelith Root - internal limb wounds
Ithor Root - internal chest wounds
Muljin Sap - internal abdomen wounds
Riolur Leaf - internal neck wounds
Junliar Stem - internal back wounds
Aevaes Leaf - internal eye wounds
Lujeakave Root - internal skin and nerve wounds

A short list of herbs known to heal external scars is provided:

Qun Pollen - external head, neck and eye scars
Genich Stem - external body scars
Blocil Berries - external limb scars
Cebi Root - external skin and nerve scars
Dioca Sap - external entire body scars

A short list of herbs known to heal internal scars is provided:

Hulij Leaf - internal head, neck and eye scars
Ojhenik Root - internal body scars
Nuloe Stem - internal limb scars
Hisan Flower - internal skin and nerve scars
Belradi Moss - internal entire body scars

Note of all the herbs listed above, junliar stem when foraged does not work. The only way to do a remedy with junliar stem is to buy it already crushed in one of the society buildings. THough I dont think all of them sell it, some do. Note the quality of the crushed junliar you buy is not top notch either so make sure you can use whats there well enough to get the quality you need, but having said that is considerably better than other herbs you buy in quality. In addition, when you buy crushed Junliar from the shops it becomes crushed Junilar in you hand. If you use my remedy script shown in the guide that wont matter much. You can start it off as junilar and it will complete it properly because the script after the first step starts to work on what is being made such as a potion or salve or draught, etc. Note also the moment you start to work on Junilar it becomes junliar again in any case. I have foraged every single item on this list. There are some that are a true pain to find. But its all out there.

Just edit and save the page without changing anything. It will rebuild the table.

Heh. I had actually removed all of those from the pages during the organization because all of the information in them is included in the tables on each page in addition to the other information. This format makes it easier to pull together lists of items via queries like with the sortable table. If you feel that people need to see the same information in a different format than the tables provide then I won't remove them. Or if you feel the table format is too complicated to read, I can format the output into sentence form that matches the recalls. Otherwise, we can just leave the note on the affected pages that the in-game RECALL HERB information doesn't match what actually is the case.

>recall herb

hah, sorry! Maybe we leave it on the pages for now, since we've also got the notes for not available/needs corrections there too. I don't think those tables are hard to read at all, but since a GM at some point took the time to write up all the recall's, at the very least it is documented. When a GM eventually dives into updating them all, they may decide to change everything around, re-word things, etc. and it would be neat IMO to be able to see the evolution of the information.

On a tangential note, years ago when there was a Premium update to the way the shop catalogs worked, I remember that the different shop inventories would be added to the HOME CATALOG when any player entered a shop and checked out the inventory there. I wonder how system intensive it would be to have something similar happen when people forage (in this case, the healing herbs), and it would then open up access to that herb in that spot in a RECALL HERB directory. So for example, a player would have to find some qun pollen in x-location for it to show up.

Then, when a character did a RECALL HERB <herb name>, they would get the current text overview regardless of skill checks. Then, depending on your perception, outdoorsmanship, alchemy, maybe appraisal or other skill checks too, you could also get something like this:
>recall herb georin
You recall georin grass is used to heal external neck injuries, and is generally found in rural cultivated areas, savannahs, and coastal areas.
Additionally, looking around at the flora around you, you feel you might locate some at:
[Whitehall Commons, Path of Life]

Or another output option that focuses on the terrain types might look like:
>recall herb georin
You recall georin grass is used to heal external neck injuries, and is generally found in rural cultivated areas, savannahs, and coastal areas.
Additionally, you recall the different terrains in this area:
rural cultivated area: [Whitehall Commons, Path of Life]

The more ranks you have in the skill check skills, the further away from your current location you could "recall" hearing about that herb being found. So for instance, with the qun pollen example again, someone with 100 ranks in all the skill check skills could be maybe 1 or 2 rooms away from the pre-located qun pollen room and get the message about it. However, someone with 500 ranks in all the skill check skills might be able to be 25-30 rooms away.

There would need to be some distance limits obviously, maybe could use the same calculations as the gweth ranges to keep things manageable. You would be scrolling forever to see the whole list of things like georin grass or jadice flower if you had high ranks in the skills needed and there was no distance limit.

And yes, I know this is the 1001'th different request to have some sort of IG herb finding system. One of these days, one of these ideas we keep throwing out there is going to stick!

I love the recall herb being able to locate a room where herbs are found. I'm not sure how resource intensive a check 25 rooms away might be though.

Alternately, a survey verb might help make sense of things.

>survey environment
This is a forest.

>recall herb forest
A forest typically contains the following herbs: x, y, and z.

As a bonus, this would probably help fix rooms that are set incorrectly (grasslands where you can't forage grass, etc) while giving the player useful information, similar to the justice verb.

>>> 1. Both jadice flower and jadice pollen are still available to forage. Jadice flower currently works as a reagent for external limb wounds recipes. Does jadice pollen still have a purpose or is it just a legacy item with respect to alchemy now?

I have never tried, but I in principle pollen should work since it would be "jadice" after preparing it. I will have to go forage some and try.

They cannot be created currently, they were turned off when the new alchemy system was released. The old recipe items do work, however. Critters also drop old herbs and recipes rather than new. Honestly, though, I have no idea why one would want the old potions since the new ones are far better (excepting toxicity). I can see the appeal of the old herbs (you don't need to prepare them), but again they are far inferior to the new.

Just a warning... I made a couple changes to the herb template because the 'edit with form' option wasn't playing nice with it. I'm too sleepy to go through and adjust all the herb pages right now, however, so most of them will look like they're broken until tomorrow when I can get to it. The data is still there, it just isn't displaying.

I saw this thread about recall herb. I think it would be cool at least to be able to show what herbs are available in that room, thoughts?
