is this used by anything currently?
and martial wood shaping is under decorative wood shaping? why? if anything, I would think if it has to have a prereq, it would make more sense to put it under bowcrafting basics. (considering bowcrafting basics is just creating a smooth pole.. with some slight differences)

Not AFAIK. IIRC Kodius said the was saved for rare/auction/quest bow templates when they come about.

My guess is so that everyone who wanted to make bows wouldn't also be good at making staves. Makes it more of a choice between the two if you aren't specializing in Shaping or have a ton of ranks.

sounds good. thanks

I could understand that if it was more invested.. and if the first prereq was directly related to wood weaponry (like pretty much every other similar technique)...
For the 1 extra slot.. it is more a nuisance than anything else.. especially since you can unlearn techniques.

A cooldown timer will soon be added, much like exists for spells and NMU abilities. And the current system doesn't encompass everything craftable in the long-run.

ooo. will you give a heads up so I can unlearn some? I've been tinkering with various talents to find out what I like.
Also...cough hobby/career reset. cough

Well to be honest, the balance between the crafts are horrid, (shaping aside Kodius did almost as good with shaping as he did with forging) when a craft absolutely requires a $25 ticket for a quest stone or 100k for a single auction bone.
Just to get stats comparable to metals mined currently in game by all.
Personally I would not have picked carving as a career if I knew steel was going to be better then anything available for carving in game.
Deadly force, is the force which a person uses, causing—or that a person knows, or should know, would create a substantial risk of causing—death or serious bodily harm. Deadly Force is justified only under conditions of extreme necessity as a last resort,

To be fair, and I know it was a long time ago at this point, when Carving was released Kodius was clear that carved weapons would be inferior to metal weapons. He may be changing his mind about metal weapons being the superior choice with the equality of wood staves to metal ones, but it appears he's more focused on getting new disciplines released instead of spending however long it would take to improve Carving (which he has expressed interest in doing).

1.) Maybe you haven't been reading the forums? It was stated early on, and repeatedly throughout that metal weapons were going to be the standard.
2.) Bone and stone weapons ARE intended to carry a niche. In particular, they are meant to carry stronger enchantments than steel. There might also be a tie-in with poisons. Enchanting and poisons not being released yet, you aren't seeing that right now.
3.) Bone will likely allow you to do more versatile things that any other craft. You can already make both armor and weaponry with half of a discipline in bone carving. And there may eventually be bone shields as well. If that comes to be, you'll be able to completely outfit a character with only half of a discipline. Weaponsmithing is weapons only. Armor smithing is armor only. Blacksmithing is neither. Tailoring is armor only. Shaping only provides a few weapons. Remedies - well... I imagine it will get better.
Taking stock of its defensive abilities, and attacking with a book of apprentice carving instructions, you are certain that the dire bear is a truly skilled opponent.

It needs something you can't get from an empath... or by casting Consume Flesh, if your character happens to be able to do that.
