>>I totally get that it's easy to stay in the room. I'm just reporting that my personal instinct is that Codiax did the work to "push the button", so in fairness he should have first dibs at it.
It's not a huge deal, and I wouldn't expect anyone to not camp my room if it was crowded. Either way I do understand if I leave the room it's open game for anyone to try to take it "deliberately". But it's a two way street, deliberately doing something that may cause a conflict, may cause a conflict. That's my character's choice which won't change no matter how many times people's OOC opinons say don't leave the room. All the examples to other types of things didn't really make sense because they weren't the same type of situation at all.
Leilond, your rundown through the points made alot of sense.

>>ALEPH-ONE
I'm not disagreeing with you. However, I think a miner should probably contact all the other miners in the area ahead of time to establish ground rules for if 'leaving a mined out room' will be tolerated.
If you get everyone in the mine to agree to this practice ahead of time then everyone will be playing by the same rules and should ultimately be able to make more profit without having to worry about someone else 'stealing' pre-mined out rooms.
The thing that you absolutely shouldn't do is assume or expect everyone else will abide by this same philosophy. Unless you've established this mindset ahead of time, assume that every vacant room is free to everyone in the mine.

Another good idea Lielond and if I do continue to want to mine multiple rooms I probably will take this approach first.

>>In other words, the more work required to push such a button, the more I feel the one who worked at it deserves first dibs at the reward.
The person who worked at it DOES get first dibs. ALWAYS. That's why this argument is so dumb. Whenever you clear out a mining room, you are faced with a choice - do I prefer to move to another room and take a shot at getting a rare lucky drop while I wait for this first room to respawn, even though there is a chance someone could come take this room while I'm gone, or do I prefer to make sure I get the respawned room even though it means I have to sit here for 10+ minutes training something else instead of mining.
It's really not that hard. The person who mined out the room gets the choice of whether it's worthwhile to keep their "first dibs" on the respawned room. If you choose to move out of the room and then complain about someone else moving in, you look rather silly.
I don't understand how there can be such a long forum discussion about a topic so simple as "just don't leave the room".

>>Mining is like playing a slot machine. You are playing the machine for a chance to win the jackpot.
Well, yes and no. For me it comes down to timing and work. A slot machine, you press a button and wait a few seconds. Mining, you "work" at the button for 15-20 min.
>>However, I think a miner should probably contact all the other miners in the area ahead of time to establish ground rules for if 'leaving a mined out room' will be tolerated.
Totally agree.

Sorry I didn't mean you actually. :)
Apu, that is a good way to look at things, can't really complain about it when you do have a choice. You can talk with others beforehand if they are willing to set a deal as Leilond suggested. Obviously someone else can enter at any point and land in one of the rooms you mined out...and I have no problems with that at all.

You know, I wasn't looking at it this way, but now I see your point. It makes a lot of sense.
>>Great! So we're all in agreement.
Yep. You won't hear me complaining about it -- except in the "oh shoot I missed my chance" way.
Of course, this doesn't address the issue I brought up about how it discourages camaraderie. In other words, if I find a mine that's totally empty but for me, I get basically double the chance at rares. Thus the current system encourages spreading out rather than working together.

And I think with Leilond's suggestion, if you find a mine with just you and a couple others, everyone could get double the chances. That's why the whole dog eat dog mentality doesn't make sense to me, you hurt yourself by being that way.

1) Taking the rare metals you mine without chipping away all the trash first directly benefits me in two categories: effort and reward.
2) Your argument is based on the assumption that rare mining materials are the only reward. I would consider experience a reward as well, which means I am not "losing" my reward by waiting for the rare veins to appear.

<<If you are going to do decent mining you need two rooms.>>
I challenge this postulate and state that your version of "decent" is flawed.
<<OTHER peopels respanwns and cleared rooms.>>
Easiest way to stop this is not to leave the room. No coding needed.

I'm pretty much in agreement with the 'don't leave the room if you want to see the re-spawn' comments here. One thing did make me chuckle though:
>Of course, this doesn't address the issue I brought up about how it discourages camaraderie.
Got me thinking how different the California gold rush would have been if there had been more 'camaraderie' between the claim stakers! From stories I remember hearing from that era, we have a very polite interaction going on between everyone if the worst we're seeing is 'they camp our re-spawns!'.
Makes me wish I had a character over in the Fallen to play around with...

- Kythryn says "hey, looks like you found a gold vein"
- JoeBob says "yea, I got pretty lucky!"
>Kythryn prepares the Nissa's Binding Spell.
>Kythryn casts at JoeBob
>Kythryn drags JoeBob to Spirit Dancers
- Kythryn says "Looks like I got lucky and found me a gold vein."
>Kythryn whistles merrily as she mines the gold

Hehe, true. I realize camaraderie might be less realistic, but I think that in this case it's also more fun. The game is supposed to be something you can do with your friends (or do to make friends), and I think there are still plenty of opportunities for competition.

Re: Mining Etiquette on 08/28/2011 08:17 AM CDT
course, theres 3 guilds that could possibly leave a "marker" to claim a room. necromancers and WM, and traders. 1. park a zombie there. 2. park a familiar there. 3. park a caravan there. I have a feeling this would work out best for WMs though, unless you're talking about a HLC necro's zombie; as WM can "see" thru the eyes of their familiar.

I agree leaving a room forfeits any and all claims to whatever is in there. It resorts back to first come, first served. If you manage to get back after respawn and the room is still unoccupied then you're back in business.
I've only found one highly desirable vein, and I absolutely sat on the depleted room until it respawned. Unfortunately, it didn't respawn the same rare metal, but I wasn't going to take any chances. Good for me it happened late at night and no one came around while I was mining or waiting for respawn so got lucky on that.
