Why Moon Mages will be good at mining....
Prepare PG 55
Cast rock face
Get some messaging about location of things
Forage vine
you forage around for a while and find a rough vine
prepare pd 30
cast rock face
Using your previous knowledge you displace the vine for the gold hidden within the rock face and snicker as you notice people diging with tools, how mundane.

Kyrrian looks up from his digging to see a moon mages snickering at him, clobbers him upside the head with his pick (a sudden loss of bowel control accompanies a twitching death) and takes his newly displaced gold.
That was pretty mundane, I admit, but I'm rich and you're dead :P

Mining doesn't yet exist in the game. Mostly likely the first mining sites will be in Forfedhdar, which isn't coming out until at LEAST late into next spring.

Mining, TDPs and you on 01/25/2005 10:10 PM CST
I, like so many others am anxiously awaiting the release of the mining system. I had heard the system would be a profession, and would need TDPs to use in conjuction with the training of some new skill. Now I hear the system is being worked into foraging. Anyone know what will happen when mining comes out? A new skill called mining? Need the TDPs or can I use them for stats? Any feedback is great!

Mining and Careers on 04/14/2005 12:41 PM CDT
Well, having read the entire folder, and having seen no GM activity on Mining since cough 2002, I'm going to go out on a foraged apple limb and say Mining is dead.
That is until at least after 1) the mech lore split and 2) the full implementation of careers and such.

You realize the full implementation of careers is going to take at least a couple of years, right (if everything is still relatively on track, the plan is to release careers in waves starting with the very simplest and progressing to the more complicated ones that require the foundations provided by the simpler careers)?

> Any update on mining, Or is it waiting for the mech split to be fully hashed out before its worked on?
Gold panning is under construction. Mining is waiting a bit on the mech lore split, or more specifically the new creation mechanics. Like the skin rewrite, we need to know exactly what sort of stats and information "crafting" materials need to have before we can do much else. Once that's decided, things will start happening very fast.

I suppose you probably wanted more than just that "yes", huh?
Since I don't have all the specifics mapped out, I'm going to be even vaguer than the normal GM-vague. Sorry 'bout that! But basically we'll be looking at a few options -- panning (gold, mostly), placer mining, and of course the ever-popular hard rock mining. Probably in that order.
What can you expect? Let's just say that mining is a hazardous job. In addition to the chance of cave-ins, you also have to worry about bad air, claim-jumpers, and a host of other problems. My goal is to try to create a robust interactive system where folks not only have to dig for ore, but have to worry about the safety and construction of the mines, as well as wonder who or what else might be interested in all that wealth. We'll also be looking at refining processes where metals are smelted, gems are cut, and so on. So no, it's not going to be a small system, but I actually don't think it'll be too hard to construct once we have all the necessary foundation-level information we need to proceed.

Re: Mining update please? on 10/25/2007 06:28 AM CDT
I was wondering are things planned specifically for warrior mages in mining? Seems to me the 'masters of elemental magic' would be able to do a lot of amazing things in mining. Like earth sense acting like ground penetrating radar, power perception working differently for us under the ground as well would be neat. Perhaps certain things exude a different magnitude of earthen mana.. so by perceiving you'd know that a blazing mana source to the northwest most likely would be a chunk of metal ore. Magically shoring up the walls instead of having to have timbers, sounds like something basic to do as well.
I dunnoe, there are dozens of ideas that could be suggested, if any form of this direction will be enterained?

>>Seems to me the 'masters of elemental magic' would be able to do a lot of amazing things in mining. Like earth sense acting like ground penetrating radar
Such beneficial effects would have to be coded into the spells, and as of yet I haven't been approached about rewriting them to include mining 'goodies'. I really don't expect to, either.
>>power perception working differently for us under the ground as well would be neat. Perhaps certain things exude a different magnitude of earthen mana.. so by perceiving you'd know that a blazing mana source to the northwest most likely would be a chunk of metal ore.
Unlikely, for many technical reasons. It also doesn't jive well with magic theory: while it's possible to call forth various types of elemental energy, the elemental mana you perceive is made up of hopelessly intertwined strands of mana of all elemental types.
Mana isn't necessarily produced by more valuable objects, so using it as a means of detecting ores is about as reliable as closing your eyes and pointing in a random direction. In fact, very little is known about what objects produce elemental mana (and why). Some theorize that elemental mana isn't produced by objects at all, but is rather the result of how 'close' the Plane of Abiding is to the Elemental Planes. All of this preamble is just a convoluted way of saying that using Power Perception skill to sniff out precious metals and minerals is not on the table.
>>I dunnoe, there are dozens of ideas that could be suggested, if any form of this direction will be enterained?
While suggestions are always welcome, I doubt that easy magical means of bypassing the major risks and costs of mining will be seriously considered.

Elemental mana is not emitted by individual objects, it is produced by the movement and activity of elemental forces. A mountain in isolation produces no elemental mana, but an avalanche might. Readers of the Moon Mage folder might notice this sounds familiar.

Room based mana distribution in the game has only a passing resemblance to the fun little lore bits we talk about.
For unusual situations, like high Elemental mana in a stagnant pond, the answer is furious hand waving and muttering things such as "the location has an unusual affinity to the Elemental Planes," "activity under the surface," and "obscure dynamics of how mana works that Elanthian theorists do not yet comprehend."

Awesome information, thank you all for the responses. Kinda figured elemental mana could be like thatm, and it is nice to know it is.

It does sound familiar, always fun to read that folder.
Good to know that things could be considered, and yeah I knew that bypassing major risks would never happen. However having significant tools which would make someone seek out a warrior mage for mining would be an amazing thing to happen.

Is it safe to assume that Placer Mining will be used to mine gems and smal lamounts of prescious metal (gold, silver, etc) while hard rock mining will be used to mine coal, iron ore, and other ore and minerals? Or will both types have the same possible yeilds, just two different styles of getting it?
