Anyone know if the listing of characters that was at http://drp.whistlethis.com/ is hosted somewhere else now or if it is entirely defunct?

I realized that after I posted that elanthipedia has taken over that site's function somewhat, but it doesn't have quite the same functionality. And accepted convention on elanthipedia pages is to post IC stuff about your character, not skills, spells, etc. like the character profiler did.

I've been having a bit of fun using the wayback machine to take a snapshot look at characters circa 2009. E.g. ISHARON certainly has come a long way since then. :) http://web.archive.org/web/20090601115537/http://drp.whistlethis.com/v.php?def=87

That page has been down for some time. I've e-mailed the owner a few times but never got a response.

This isn't necessarily true.

You could definitely make a section about your character skills on your ePedia page. If you wanted, you could even make it a subpage, like https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Character/skills

Yes, I know that. But it is currently not the generally accepted convention that has been tacitly arrived at by the community as a whole.

Since starting this thread I have been toying with the idea of either expanding the Player Character template to include an optional section for listing skills in the info box if desired. Or possibly creating a separate template called something like Player Skills that people could add to their page if they wished. There's pros and cons to both. I'm trying to wrap my head around the best way to approach doing this, and I'm not even sure this is something anyone would actually want.

So start doing it so people can start adopting the idea of doing it. :P

I'd be against this just because it would make the box a bit cluttered/messy in my eyes. I see the PC template as a quick reference guide than a large detailed list. I'd rather see some kind of separate template for skill data.

Including skills in the Player Character template doesn't necessarily imply that the skills would be listed in the info box. The template could easily place that information in a table elsewhere in the page. Including it in the Player Character template would just allow it to easily be entered via a Form in an inuitive way. The downside is that the template itself becomes quite complex for someone who just wants to display what it displays now, although the form editing makes that somewhat of a lesser issue.

That said, there is something about having the skills listed in a narrow box down the right side that visually makes sense to me though. It also wouldn't be too much trouble to have that visually separated from the at-a-glance infobox.

Sorry about that–I meant the template that displays the character info (the box), not the template people use to fill out details on the back end. I keep forgetting about that template since I didn't really use it when making my own profiles.

>>The downside is that the template itself becomes quite complex for someone who just wants to display what it displays now, although the form editing makes that somewhat of a lesser issue.

IMO if you put it lower down on the page and list that it's optional, people wouldn't get intimidated by it.

Ehhhhh... that only looks visually sane if the page's main contents are long enough to support it. Otherwise you'll have a ton of scroll for a really thin sidebar and no main content being displayed. Maybe if it was top X skills or something, but not a full skill listing.

I can see that being a concern. I'm working on a mock up on my user page trying to come up with solutions. What about the option of a collapsible table?

Something along these lines:
https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/User:ABSOLON

If a collapsible table was deemed a good option, it should be able to be done as a collapsible portion of the main infobox, and not separate like I have in the current mock up. So when someone opened the page they would see the infobox as is with a link to expand the skills section of it.

I'd rather see it as a separate unit that is embedded at the end of the main column content just for legibility and the ability to view everything at once (or at least a higher potential for it).

Making it collapsible on the side (or bottom) is a solid idea, though.

So after a bit of experimentation I have come to the conlcusion this would only be easily done if it was a separate template that had to be manually included in every character page, since I don't think it is possible to put additional text in the middle of a template without having it be an actual entry in the template. I.e. additional text will always appear after all the elements of a template.

The best solution I can come up with utilizing a single template would look like something I have on my user page now where the skills link is beside the infobox and depending on the width of your browser/screen will expand in the same location or just below the infobox. Adjust the size of your browser to see the potential display differences.

I should note that the template will allow you to specify whether to show skills or not, and it will off by default, so that skills bar will not be there for most player pages unless they decide to include their skills.

I actually like that display setup a lot. Just wish there was a way to make it at the end of the content.

In a perfect world, something like this: https://elanthipedia.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/User:TEVESHSZAT/demo

No way to just have people check a box in the template to auto-include something like {{RTOC}} at the bottom of the page?

That would easily be achievable using a second template, and is one of the pros of going that method. The con being that it makes it harder for people to know how to do it. Documention in the primary template would help alleviate that.

The people who would want to post their stats and skills on their Elanthipedia pages are probably a fairly small minority. I would make it a completely separate template with a link on the documentation for the Player character template to the documentation for the skill table template. Then you could simply place the skill table code at the bottom of your character's page if you want to provide that information.

The main reason why I am trying to get it to work with the main template is mostly for ease of entry just by using the Edit With Form link at the top of the page. If it was a separate template that wouldn't be an option, at least not directly.

Okay, I think I have it all done. Mind double checking my work to see if everything looks good?

I couldn't figure out how to pull the Guild parameter from the main template for use in the sub-template (granted I didn't try very hard, I'm sure there's a way) so I just based variable skills like Primary Magic and the guild-only skills on which guild-only skill was entered. There are a couple of quirks a result:

1. It will only display a guild-only skill if something was entered in that skill, but because there's no check based on guild entered it could potentially display more than one.

2. It will change the display of Primary Magic to read the appropriate magic type as long as the guild specific skill was given a value. If it was not, then it will just display as Primary Magic even if the guild was entered. If more than one guild skill was entered it prioritizes which one to use to calculate mana-type by their order of appearance in the template.

Unfortunately you can't. It's not actually a main and sub template, it's two main templates that share a form.

Nifty!

A couple of observations/questions/suggestions:

1. The notes section doesn't seem to appear in profiles, or I'm just missing where it displays.
2. I think that the old character profiler (possibly?) used to parse the SPELL verb. I just stuck its output into notes which will work fine, but see #1.
3. There's only a handful of people so far so it's not possible to tell right now... but how deep does the ranking list go, and can we view portions of it other than the top x entries?
4. I really like the way we can choose the filter for the ranking lists. I think being able to rank by average skill would be useful as well. Maybe by stats too. E.g. Total stats, total physical stats, total mental stats. Also, perhaps more options like a secondary filter by guild or race so you can see who has the best magics out of all warrior mages or the best lores out of all empaths, etc.? Also a specific skill or stat would be nice to rank by. Possibly the main filter being 'Individual Stat/Skill' and a secondary drop down to choose the specific stat or skill to keep things clean.
5. Your Simutronics legal blurb at the bottom has the DragonRealms copyright from 1995 to 2008, so I'm not sure the latter date is correct? I assume you cut and paste the blurb from somewhere, so it probably needs updating to 2014.

Anywho... how's that for piling on the suggestions for what is clearly a side-project for you? ;)

Thanks!

>>1. The notes section doesn't seem to appear in profiles, or I'm just missing where it displays.

You're right. I haven't put that anywhere yet.

>>2. I think that the old character profiler (possibly?) used to parse the SPELL verb. I just stuck its output into notes which will work fine, but see #1.

Yes not collecting spell data specifically (yet).

>>3. There's only a handful of people so far so it's not possible to tell right now... but how deep does the ranking list go, and can we view portions of it other than the top x entries?

Right now it's just the top 25. I plan on adding paging so you can go through everyone. Probably a search too so you can find yourself easily in the list to see what # you're at.

>>4. I really like the way we can choose the filter for the ranking lists. I think being able to rank by average skill would be useful as well. Maybe by stats too. E.g. Great ideas! I had already thought of a few of them (related to filtering by guild and total stats), though its good to hear some additional ideas I can work on.

Good catch. Easily fixed (already fixed it locally).

>> Anywho... how's that for piling on the suggestions for what is clearly a side-project for you? ;)

Pretty good job! =P

Just in case anyone else notices, there are a couple bugs found already, such as Warrior Mage and Moon Mage guilds not auto populating on character creation, and S'Kra Mur and Gor'Tog not showing properly in lists. Working on fixing those.

Along those lines, you can sign up and mark your character as private. So you'll be able to see your character's profile and get all the nice number crunching (total tdps, averages, etc.) though it will only be available to you, or anyone you give the link to. Have already seen some people do this.
