Beat me to it. They do run a bit though. That involves feet. So let's rename volleyball, tennis, 'soccer', baseball and all them other things football, too! (Slightly sarcastic...I know ya got yer kicks in American Football)... Is a bit silly, ain't it?

well... Football (what you call Soccer) was invented first. thats why ;-)

So AMERICAN Football is just a cheap knockoff of Football and Rugby.

I don't understand what you have said there. Mind explaining it? Because I'm definetly not American. Well, South American, but not the USA, American which is so commonly used.

And what is this general knowledge you speak of? The fact that USA Americans think that whenever someone says football, or as we call it, futebol, they think we are speaking about a game played with a ball that does not necessarily fall into the "ball" category, being that balls must have a spherical shape to it, not the oblong shape that the AF "ball" has. Now if you look at the Rugby ball, it is in fact an oval, so it falls into that category. Way to go mates!

And lastly Futebol isn't a mispelling of the word Football. ;)

Ecoles, proud to be American..... South that is

Although, most folks I know have always played rugby with a blatant disregard for the rules. Come to think of it we had quite a few broken bones in our football (soccer) matches as well. Heck, with enough beer you can get a good round of injuries going during a fishing tournament...

Exactly. You are an American. The fact that the USA had adopted the term for itself is completely irrelevent. The nation should be referred to as The United States, because America refers to the continent of America (or the continents of North and South America, whichever you have been taught about in school).

Duh. Australians don't call thier game Australian Rules Football, they just call it Footy(gotta love how they abreviate everything). Why would an American refer to his football game as American Football? Unless of course he was talking to someone from outside the States.

'Nope, basketball was invented at a YMCA in Boston for purpose of having an indoor sport to play during the winter months. A 'soccer' ball (heh) and peach baskets were originally used, and since the baskets had no holes, they used ladders to get the ball out of the basket.

Hey when does the World Series start? snicker Since the world is evidently USA and Canada *snickers some more*. And lets declare any winner of American sports the "world champion".

At least the sporting world outside the US lets the world play in series that have 'world' in the title.

Well, if you want to get extremely technical, basketball's roots from the Incan game, where one had to use one's elbows to elbow a leather ball through a hoop standing on itself. It was a Canadian who invented the game of basketball, and they used a soccer ball and peach baskets, since they did have to use stairs, they went to the holes on the bottom of the baskets and broomsticks, this was followed by our favorite Canadian breaches, so the ball would slide through. And that's where we get our current nets....

PS - Yes I did learn most of my english from DR.

PS2 - When everyone else in the world calls it American Football, with the exception of people living in the US, it defaults to that. The same thing with futebol, everyone in the world uses this term, except americans. This does not only apply to sports though coughMetricSystemcough

If Simu discovers DR teaches English as well as you claim it has taught you then, I think they ought to start having it in other languages like portuguese and swahili.

Yes, Simu did teach most of my basic English, since then I have moved to Tennessee. But I only started playing 3 years ago.

And in portguese 'You're pulling my leg' is "Voce esta me tirando". Mind you this isn't the exact literal translation, but it's the idiomatic phrase of it.

Actually, the full name for Mexico is The United States of Mexico. As result in Mexico they call the U.S.A. America and not The United States.

I always thought it funny that my country was named after an Italian who had never been there, thanks to a German map-maker who had not yet heard of Columbus's Voyage before heard of Amerigo's. Well at least Amerigo was first to realize it was a new continent.

I much prefer rugby to American football. However as with football/soccer is would never make it in the United States. No time outs means no time for commericals means no big money. I do have a question, why was the game ruined by rugby league? Anytime you see a game or TV here in the states it is always rugby league but all the clubs here play rugby union (I played for 4 or 5 years back in the 70's). League is too much like American football with the play stopping all the time, union just continues. I also enjoy watching 1 offical take care of a pitch with 30 players.

Actually, Soccer or football as those of you outside U.S.A. say it, is growing in popularity here in America. Many who live outside of U.S.A. don't always realize how much cultural diversity the U.S.A has (Hollywood is partly to blame for how others view the U.S.A), and as more and more immigrate here, the more the game becomes popular.

Popular meaning it is reaching more youth organizations and organised sports, yes. Popular as in you can watch every MLS game on television, no.

Me and my flatmates went to the Mexico vs US match here in Denver. The crowd was roughly 15% US fans the rest Mexico Fans. Pro soccer is as popular in the states as American Footbal is in Europe.

Exactly, I coached youth soccer for 12 years. It is the largest and most organized youth sport in the US but I don't see it replacing American football at the pro level.
