So... since I'm a criminal justice major I was curious for all those who heard about the University of Florida's police officer getting shot by the Orlando Police Department officer and what ya'll thought. Do you feel less safe because if that could happen to a police officer it could happen to anyone...? Or maybe more? Just an "I wonder thread.." :)

Safe is state of mind these days. I'm not sure what you're going to do with your degree but if you get into the public saftey are you'll understand exactly what I mean. I'm a full time paramedic in Randolph County, NC and there's not a shift that goes by that I don't see something utterly stupid happen for no apparent reason. This is just the way our world turns.

Bad things happen. The important thing to do is keep your head on a constant piviot and be aware of everything around you. From what I've read, the story says a plain clothed officer was holding a gun to someones head when he got shot. It also said he was trying to bust underage drinkers. I don't know why PD would be holding a gun to any underage drinkers head for one. Second, this is very bad communication of the part of PD and the undercover.

It's rare I feel safe in my job. I run calls that in involve overdoses, shootings, stabbings, rape, people being beat up, and the list goes on. Everyone of these calls land me in the middle of some ill gotten place, but this is my carreer, the one I've chosen and I enjoy it. I've been run off the sceane of an accident at gun point from trying to help the one whom got shot. It's surpringing that in such a rural county you have this sorta mess, but it's everywhere. Again, head on a pivot, be smart and good communication with officers, surpervisors, and field staff.

Sometimes, when I'm driving in my own vehicle I don't even feel safe. When you're scraping up a body off the side of the highway from your ambulance twice or maybe 5 times a week you can't help but say, "what are people thinking." Last week a sheriff depuity just drove out in front of a car, got T'boned, sufferd alot of head trauma, and almost died. Did he think? Probably not, and that's the thing. It only takes the one second of "not thinking" and you ruin your life or someone elses.

In conclussion, do I feel safe? Well yeah. I'm not going to spend my life letting the things that could happen affect my standard of living. I refuse to walk through life worrying about "EVERY LITTLE THING AROUND THE CORNER", but I am going to use my noggin, keep my eyes peeled, and try not to walk blindly into something thats possibly preventable. For example, watch other drivers and drive safe, try to avoid taking the scenic route through crack town, and things of this nature. Basicaly, use some common sense and good judgement in every decision you ever make. The police offer was simply a case of bad communication which unfortunatly is a product of every buisness from public saftey to textile and factory and yes I'm sure at times SIMU-BUBBA even rolls his eyes at the taste of poor communication skills in his place of buisness. Don't let it get you down there are some really good officers in all departments of all states and cities and some not so.
