Has anyone checked their machine for this thing that's going to activate at midnight? Wouldn't it be a pain that come midnight they suddenly lost connection or something. I'm not exaclty sure of the implications, but it's probably not good.

If it's the bug I think it is, it was pretty much shot down a long, long, time ago.

It's not a "bug" (unintentional conflict or error in code) and everybody should check. A very widespread form of Malware, DNSChanger, changed the DNS tables stored in people's machines to direct them to rogue DNS lookup sites, as opposed to the proper ones for their ISP. (This allowed them to spoof all kinds of websites without it being "visibly" detectable)

The ring behind DNSChanger was broken up 2-3 years ago, however, DNSChanger was so widespread, and something so few people know how to look at or maintain, that the FBI actually picked up the tab and tookover the rogue DNS network. They're finally ending support. This means if somebody did/does have DNSChanger lurking on their machine still, they will in fact, not be able to find anything because they wont have the IP of a valid DNS Server in their computer.

If you bought a machine since then, you're probably okay. And this is honestly far more likely to effect markets where people don't get a new computer every few years, and training on how the work and how to maintain them is not readily available. "R5" like places, basically.

It's still a good idea to go to http://dns-ok.us/ and have it check you out real fast. For international folks, I'd recommend a google search for "DNSChanger Test" and it should produce a valid result.
