I'm new to this part of Elanthia. What public transportation does one take to get from Ratha to M'riss or Mer'Kresh? Thanks!

You have to go to Haraa first, then Mer'kresh. The way to get to Haraa is still considered an IG secret I believe but if you want a spoiler: http://www.drsecrets.com/secrets/wiki/Hara'jaal_Access_Quest

Just as a heads up, the boat ride is ridiculously long. Not quite as ridiculous as the Ratha to Aesry route, but its pretty darn close. And travelling between the two necessary docks on Hara'jaal island is not for the faint of heart. Cliffs and monsters and mazes, oh my!
For potentially faster/safer options, you can walk to Taisgath from Ratha and ask if anyone on M'riss or Mer'Kresh can gate you or if you can gate yourself provide an anchor since its within gweth range from there. Also, if you know a moon mage who can travel the astral plane they will be able to get you to those islands without an anchor provided that they have learned the Grazhir shard there. Finally, there are player boats which are infinitely faster than the public ones.

Taisgath is shared gweth range/shift moonbeam with M'riss/Mer'kresh?
I did not know that.
Anyhow - all the prior answers are right - but with the addition of a shard on Mer'kresh you have the option of near instant transport there from any 100+ moon mage you can find (Round abouts there they should have sufficent PM to open a gate from the islands to the mainlands).

Not shared, but next door. With Hara'jaal too. Only Aesry is out of reach from there. Check the coordinate chart if you use it. If not here's a fun ascii representation (click reply to see the proper alignment):
..A
.R.
.T.
.MH
Each letter represents the island(s) that start with it. Periods are ocean. Islands that are no more than one coordinate away in any direction, including diagonally, are within gwething and shifting range.

Yeah I use the map - but don't have it at work :P
I knew they were next door, I just was fairly sure they weren't shared gweth range (and thus shift range) from my memory. I mean you could use a beacon of course.
re: Aesry as a slight tangent - it IS within shift range from Ratha (though not Taisgath I do believe) and since Ratha and Taisgath are for all practical purposes the same island due to the moongate...

Right, they're not the same gweth range but they are within range of eachother. Taisgath has a unique gwething sphere of influence from any other island. Mer'kresh/M'riss and Hara'jaal have the same effective gweth sphere of influence if you don't count ocean zones. The only difference between them and Taisgath is that Taisgath includes Ratha in its sphere of influence, once again not counting ocean zones.
<<re: Aesry as a slight tangent - it IS within shift range from Ratha (though not Taisgath I do believe)
Yeah, I meant out of reach gweth-wise if you want to be in range of Mer'kresh at the same time. You are correct about Taisgath not being in shift range of it, although its only a few steps as you say to get to within range.
<<and since Ratha and Taisgath are for all practical purposes the same island due to the moongate...
Well, all practical purposes except gwething and shifting. ;) They are geographically distant enough to be mechanically different. It's like saying Theren and Throne City (or Crossing and Dirge, etc.) are for all practical purposes the same places because you can travel between them in seconds. They have very different gwething/shifting spheres of influence.
I'm not really arguing with you by the way, I'm just bored and feel like having a semantics discussion. Yay for semantics!

You can tell how much time I spend on the islands :P
Anyhow - the only reason I call "taisgath and Ratha practically the same place" is because they're islands.
Either way the tricky part is to get them to Taisgath. Once you do that there's a number of ways to work from there.
PS: Don't have the calc in front of me but I want to say 641 PM is the key right? Min PM to gate from mainlands to islands (under optimal beam placements).
