I am going to try and make this post sound as reasonable as possible.
I would really like a GM to comment on the possibilities of this.
You look in each cities ports and there's tons of ships just sitting around. I know each and every one of them are owned. The problem is as Ssra stated, it will be later this year before ships gets a look see and then the prices will probably go up.
Now as I see it and probably a few more folks, there are ships that are just sitting around out there that have not had their crews paid, taxes or whatever fees are due. I know that Simu is holding off on doing something with some of these ships because of deployment, which I fully understand and agree with(Having our twin sons in Iraq ourself is why).
But there are or should be ways for simu to sort through the ones that are sitting there unattended and not going anywhere soon and those that are on accounts on hold for military, health, other valid reasons, etc.
The just plain canceled accounts should have their ships un-scuttled or however they are lost and put back on the market after a certain time frame like homes do if your account is closed.
My idea is to have an auction of those ships, the winner of each ship can own only one, has to pay back wages, fees, etc and a reduced price for the ship since it is already pre-built and used.
If there are more than enough ships to go around maybe instead of an auction, there can be a bidding type system, that can go on for a certain number of days. Say the past wages, docking fees, upkeep, etc comes to 100 plats. That is added to a reasonable fee of say a cutter which new sells for 12k. Sell the used ship for 6k plus the past wages and fees as a bottom line price.
A person can then sign a list bidding which can be a blind list with the amount they are willing to pay for said ship(The bottom line Price should be listed). The only thing another person looking at that ship would see is so and sos' name and then if they wish they can bid again on the ship. Give it like 5 real life days for the bidding to continue with no SET time of the bidding to stop, just stopping randomly on the 5th day so, someone could not come in an steal the Ship and put in a last second bid and take the ship.
Also make it so the only way t bid on the ships would be to have the cash on hand at the time of bidding or a letter of intent from a bank stating the person had the funds to buy the ship. This would keep price gouging down and don't you think this could be an ideal system for traders? They can be the go between person for say the City of the Crossing and Player A, B, C etc. The trader would not be able to see what each player bid, but would see the final winner and collect the fees from the player and pay the city rep and then transfer the captain's ring to the winner or his/her spouse.
The economy wins, traders get a fee, say like 1 to 3% of the final bid, excluding the past fees such as wages etc, just the base price the boat sold for.
Current ship owners even with linked accounts cannot be a part of this auction. This will give those folks that have been waiting ages a fair shot at getting a ship.
The ships name can remain the same or for a fee, maybe the Ship Yard Master can rename the ship for an added fee. Also they can come with no maps. The new owner would have to buy all those and furnishings all over if they want it.
These are just some of the ideas that I have had while searching for a ship for sale these past few months. With our anniversary drawing nearer it is looking bleaker and bleaker for her surprise. I know that IF ANY of these ideas were used, it would take time to code it unless there was a live auction, but it is something I would love to see in the game, especially the bidding part. That would be a nice feature to add to ships.
Sorry if this sounded like a whine rant etc, it is not intended to. It's just a concern from a husband who wanted to get his wife something nice for their 9th anniversary or was it 8th.
Thanks
Nuich

The game does'nt bend for one player. Or in your case, a pair of players. More than just you have been wanting a vessel, and many also have the coin to back up such a transaction. I think its somewhat foolish for you to think that any of those vessels might not be in use. Who are you to say they dont have the right to what they own? Their hard earned coin is invested in those ships, and many have the ships wages paid far in advance.
Your idea about auction is correct and I beleive an auction system was in mind for indebted ships. I also beleive that when such a thing is needed, those with the power will do so...no sooner. So sorry about your misfortune but please stop spamming the boards with your sad sad story.

I never understood why boats as a means of transportation similar to that of a horse, couldn't be dry docked (similar to stabled) when not in use. Especially in the case of breaks from the game, or forced absenses causing account closure like military service, school, illness etc. Additionally the crew should be dismissable under the same circumstances. When the player returns they could pay their dry dock fees, rehire the crew and off they go.
Always felt odd that a player had to be forced into the choice of continuing to pay for something in game, even if they had to cancel their account temporarily OR risk losing it if they don't. Especially when the item costs as much in game currency as a boat does.
It's also a win win where resources and clogged docks are concerned.

<<Alexii's Post>>
Alexii,
Five posts over the course of one year by Nuich hardly constitutes "spamming," so in short don't be a jerk. I know for a fact he has a better understanding of many of the workings of the game than other players.
As far as I can tell, he's not talking about ships whose wages have been paid in advance. Instead, he's talking about boats whose owners have since left the game in some form or another, and the crew wages have gone unpaid. While it is safe to assume that some, if not a significant portion, of boats are still used, or at the very least paid for; however, there ultimately has to be a good handful where this is not the case. When boats were released, we were told that boats that whose fees were not maintained would eventually be auctioned off. You are obviously aware of this from your message. I think Nuich's request is reasonable, and in line with that which was previously planned.
These are resources in the game that are not being used. I think if something were to be implemented, it would only be fair to send out a "warning" message (via email, and website front page)to previous owners to give them a chance to keep their ship.

I'm wondering if the ships that went away as the players terminated accounts or didn't pay the fees are not being auctioned off because of resource issues.

You make an incredible range of very broad assumptions.
>>As far as I can tell, he's not talking about ships whose wages have been paid in advance. Instead, he's talking about boats whose owners have since left the game in some form or another, and the crew wages have gone unpaid. While it is safe to assume that some, if not a significant portion, of boats are still used, or at the very least paid for; however, there ultimately has to be a good handful where this is not the case.<<
How do you know that some ship owners have left the game? And, even if they have, how do you know that they did not transfer their Captain's Ring to someone else who IS in the game? It is very simple and easy to do. Your assertion that there has to be "a good handful" of boats that have unpaid wages is based on what? Personal experience of letting your own boat's crew go unpaid? What about those boats that have unpaid wages, but their owner is still active in the game? That happened to me recently because I don't always check my ship's accounts every time I get on, and my wages are always paid in advance. I got paid up, and then paid for another year in advance. If I choose to not play for a month or two, that is my business, and when I come back, I expect to have my boat waiting for me, and not appropriated by some scavenger who whines about boats.
I have no problem at all with boats that are tied to inactive accounts getting auctioned off, but just imagine the problem that will arise when a boat gets auctioned off after the owner has been gone for a year. Now that owner comes back, and has a Captain's Ring. Yes, you can imagine the problems that will cause.
I would be much more in favor of a boat that is tied to an inactive account getting put in a "virtual drydock" where the boat disappears from view of the normal docks, and also frees up a slot for someone else to buy a boat. When and if that account gets reactivated, the owner must go to the shipyard and pay a fee to get the boat out of long term storage. That will eliminate any conflict of a boat getting auctioned off to a new owner, where the previous owner still has a Captain's Ring, as well as reduce clutter around the dock areas.
Time is not your enemy- I am.

I'm not a conflict sort of guy, never have been never will be.
Yes, I have posted in several forums the first few I was trying to buy a boat someone was willing to sell.
The next two, I just wanted to make some suggestions to staff on possible fixes to those waiting to buy boats but can't because of the mechanics in game being hosed.
There were things put in place for cases like I suggested and as far as I can tell they are not being used. It's been awhile since I have had any way to check on something like that.
I never suggested taking boats from folks that have not paid their crews etc, only those that the GM's can verify have closed accounts and the ring has not been passed on. Dry docking boats to open a space for someone to buy one would be a great idea.
Anyway, this is my last post on this subject. I apologize if I have offended anyone with my suggestions.

How about just leaving the boats be? Who cares if they aren't getting used. The owners paid for it/won it/whatever. It is their boat to use as they please.

it would be sorta neat if we could actually change the furniture around on a ship, and dress our pilots, etc. Although it wouldn't be a vault-like capability, we could GIVE Them things , and they would WEAR Them, but they won't take them off again. And if we could one-time change our pilots race, gender, and name.

Ships fall under my purview (as far as coding and technical support) as part of the responsibilities of the new Structures Team.
Ships will be getting addressed (in some form or fashion) within the year. I have some ideas about making boats more dynamic than they are currently, which is one of the big reasons Barana is still going after Gwennie...the current boats take up an area about the size (memory-wise) of Crossing and are quite a bit more memory intensive than the Crossing streets.

At the moment my ideas are:
1. Fix the boat system
2. Make them more memory efficient.
3. Change them to use the new LOOK system to improve efficiency.
I haven't started on a proposal yet, as this is my third major project in my pipeline. However, what I currently have bouncing around my head will mainly be behind the scenes technical improvements and there should be minimal impact on how the boats actually "work".

Wonderful, Thanks for answering!
Just a few more questions...
1. Fix the system? How exactly is it broken? Besides memory.
3. What sort of change would take place for this? Is it cosmetic as in ship looks? Or jantorial?

I would assume (hope?) this would also mean fixing the issue with sailing to the edge of the world and getting stuck there.

John: And those are just the things I think you did this weekend.

As the owner of the boat currently being worked on I can say after talking with some GMs at Vegascon about my galleon I almost feel bad for them helping get it done. It sounds like boat code is a huge nightmare and sadly with Jeremael passing away like he did it caused problems because things didn't get finished by him. Boats were discussed at Vegascon but nothing concrete was said other than boats are massively resource intensive and my impression is no new boats will be added until abandoned boats are dealt with and the code is more streamlined. That is my impression so please do not quote that as coming directly from any GM.
But again those of you wanting boats need to realize the important thing. My galleon is gonna be amazing. I also will have to name my first daughter after Nhia and the mass of GMs helping on different pieces. Oh and a quick kudos to GM Reexa for helping with alot of the design and to Pythea for finishing off the rest.

SEND[Caleveth] Good! That makes baby Damaris happy. Now go about your business and kindly try not to kill anyone else today before I'm finished with the paperwork for THIS one.

Yeah, I can't wait to see it now if I get the chance. GM Nhia, GM Reexa, and Pythea. Sounds amazing already.

>>Ships will be getting addressed (in some form or fashion) within the year.
Obseden, once you take a look at full boats, could you perhaps take a look at making something less resource-intensive on your end and cheaper on ours for those of us who can't afford full ships?
Perhaps something where we have to navigate the rooms for ourselves on a small barge or kayak or boat something of the sorts, but that we can put together with enough Lore or purchase with, say, 50 plats? Something that perhaps we could keep stored at a dock for rent that's about equivalent of a vault?

Great Post Terc...
<<I also will have to name my first daughter after Nhia and the mass of GMs helping on different pieces.>>
If that's the case, I'd be thankful that it was Nhia and not Zeyurn or Ssra (no offense to the gms, of course!)...just imagine her first day of school...
TEACHER: Smith...Zzz?
CHILD: Zeyurn.
TEACHER SMILES
TEACHER: Zurn
CHILD: No, Zeyurn.
Though I assume it could stop telemarketer calls :)
