I am offering up my plea to increase the base chance for a successful retreat. As a paladin, even unencumbered with 110+ ranks in hevay plate/shield use/evasion, it often takes me 10-30 minutes to successfully escape combat. I do not like using FLEE due to soul state penalties, and it seems that my success chance is around 5-10% at most, with a 3 rt each time. Successfully rolling these dice twice and hoping to succeed both times just so I can go sell my bundle or see if I have enough to buy a new sword yet is extremely frustrating.

I have no problem with it being somewhat difficult and I love the system, I just wish it was a little bit easier. Either a base increase to both chances (melee and pole range) or a large increase in the success of retreating from pole range would help.

Retreat either never works or always works. There's no real middle ground. AFAIK it generally tends to do with your armor hindrance primarily, and then something like your level vs critter level as a secondary.

Balance is a big component too. Immediately after being nocked loopy, retreating is usually a challenge.

FYI, a better way of escaping combat is to use the FLEE verb.

The way my Paladin gets out of combat is remove body armor, then retreat. It works every time due to the hinderance being reduced when you take it off.

Use flee <direction> and kiss an altar or a badge on the way to the empath.

The soul state penalty caused by a single use of FLEE isn't that bad if you have a good pilgrim's badge. Another option is to cast Banner of Truce.

So my options are:

a) Get naked during combat in which I am not agile enough to simply back away from(retreat)

b) Do something that is specifically against my guilds "code"

Sarcasm aside, thanks for the help ^.^

You're missing options c, d, e, and f.

c. Train magic, learn banner of truce, use it.

d. Never retreat. No code problems. You'll leave the field of battle when you're dead.

e. Try to retreat for 20-30 minutes each session.

f. Train evasion and don't move on until you have the ability to retreat from the next tier of mobs.

Out of all of the options, I have had the best success with b and c.

The mention of balance is pretty important to pay attention to. If you find yourself unable to retreat, take a few swings through your combo until your balance and position improve and try again. It makes a huge difference.

I ended up changing to a lighter forged armor, and now I can retreat every time from harder critters. I could not even escape one goblin(this was full health, no injuries) before I switched armor, now I can retreat from 4 vines/creepers/spiders/sprites etc every time. I was not encumbered in the old armor and my hindrance hasn't changed much, so not sure if it's a hidden check or what, but it's a night and day difference.
