Just for kicks I tried making a lochaber axe even though I don't have any weaponsmithing techniques. It came out alright, but then I decided to try and temper it. Without the appropriate technique, I was flat-out prevented from trying this (Is that right? I thought techniques were supposed to not strictly be necessary).
Putting the weapon on the forge told me that my lack of technique prevents me from proceeding, but the weapon still went onto the forge anyway. I got it off no problem, but a little later I got the following message: "You recall that you recently began working to enhance a metal weapon, but exposure to the air will quickly damage it if you do not finish quickly and protect it with some metalworking oil." So naturally I tried pouring some oil on the thing, but that won't work because it hasn't actually started the tempering process I suppose.
Tempering is pretty neat though, I did it successfully on a piece of armor. I don't guess fitting is almost ready to test out? That should be fun too.

We decided to change it so enhancements require the technique to apply. This became necessary after analyzing how the system would be used. I didn't think it was fair for someone with 1000 ranks to skip having to know a substantial portion of the techniques in the tree. With items, you can have multiple items tied to a single technique and have them span a range of difficulty tiers. Enhancements are far fewer in number and do not allow for such diversification.
Did you get that messaging today? Last night I removed the "enhancement timer" entirely, and now you can CLEAN/RUB the iem with a cleaning cloth to cancel the enhancing process.
