Okay, so I was wandering the boards while I was in the forge and decided to start firing away ideas at mediation abilities. Let me explain what I see meditations doing presently. If I'm mistaken here, someone please correct me.
A barbarian must kneel, sit or lie down and meditate on an item that is burning.
IG Reasoning - When a barbarian looks into a flame as a source of meditation, he gazes deep into the essence of that flame and witnesses the reflection of his inner fire within himself or herself.
Basically, it's just a measure of how your inner fire level is currently.
Now for some ideas I've heard to expand this ability:
Meditate <item> fire
- Ability to regain your inner fire at a faster pace then killing creatures (positive side is that your gaining inner fire faster, downside is that you don't get to kill creatures so you don't get the experience to learning weapons/defenses/etc.)
Meditate <item> berserk or stun
- Ability to have a preperation of a stun focused in your body and mind as if anticipating it. This would allow a barbarian who is dancing to have a means of protection in case they got stunned to break out of the stun while they're bodies are focused on their current dance. (Downside is that the meditation would take a while (longer time?) to focus on the exact point of the flame where a barbarian can understand that he is anticipating a battle scene in his mind)
In sports, we see this as picturing your game so you can anticipate your moves.
Those are some pretty good ideas, let me try to pull a few more on here in my mind.
Meditate <burning item> fury
- You gaze into the <burning item> and picture a scene of your fallen sisters and brothers. The corpses lying motionless as a deep anger burns within you to avenge their loss.
This would give a barbarian the ability to prepare his body for a longer more devestating berserk without the risk of being stunned at the end of the berserk. My feeling is that mental preparation of an angered state would cause a berserk to heighten into something with greater intensity then a normal berserk would dish out.
meditate <your own forged blade> - (A meditation that doesn't involve looking within your own inner fire) You gaze deep into the blade and witness and feel a tightened bond with you and it. Horrifying scream fill your mind as you look upon a scene of massive destruction.
I was hoping this would be a meditation for bonding your blade that you produced with your very own hands to you (the blade would just not let go from your grasp because of the tightened grip you have come to wield it with)
meditate <burning item> resistance
Currently, your concentration as well as flat out discipline is what primarily causes you to resist magic. In this case, I was hoping to see a meditation where you glance at a certain area of the flame as you tap into the bottem depths of your inner fire. This would cause you to be more resistant to magic then normal.
meditate <burning item> stand ground
Your eyes burn deep as your heart feels a new sense of courage within you. Strangely however, your feet respond to the light as a heavy weight falls on your body.
I wanted this ability to have a resistance toward being knocked down due to the resistance your body has against being pushed around. The extra courage your inner fire has set from the meditation has made your barbarian have a feeling of "I refuse to let my body fall down."
Closing Points - Although more ideas will come later naturally, I was wondering what other barbs were thinking when it comes to meditations. My question is: All meditations so far are pre-determined events, does anyone think a meditation can be created while hunting or in an activity of some kind? Personally, I don't think it's possible because you need to be at peace enough with yourself to gaze at the fire which is a reflection of your inner fire.
