>>Yeah, those dances are pretty weak, they sure could use an uptweak.
Meh.
I wasn't necessarily thinking it would boost a dance's power. I was thinking they might function more like shadowlings or ethereal fissures and artificially boost your ability to dance. They would raise your concentration, which would have much the same effect on dances that better room mana would have on spells... not exactly the same, but close.
Or a boar pet could somehow lower the penalty that your armor hindrance has on your dances.
It's a very new idea for something like that to affect NMU abilities but it is very comparable to what several mage guilds already have.

I really like that idea Diminishedangel! Keeping animals specific to our guild in relation to our dances would be awesome and having their abilities correlate. I think it would be pretty neat to have a woverine fighting by my side, but leave the swan out, it might be graceful and all, but pretty lame otherwise for this purpose.

Well, this idea might be a bit over the top complicated to do, but I had a thought about doing something "different" with pets then companion and familiars.
This is a more Beastmasterish concept. As your gain circles, barb guild leaders will teach you the secrets of communing with different animals. The effectiveness/power of the animal you learn will be based on your current circle that you get to learn a new communion.
So, lets say at circle X you learn the ways of the boar. When you go to a particular area, before heading in for the hunt, you must build a fire and meditate on the fire. Depending on the region you are in and your level of concentration, you can reach out and see if you can sense the presence of a boar within the area. Some areas can be easier then others, and your sphere of projection can also be increased as you gain more concentration. So, for example, if your out the east gate in Riverhaven, and you meditate on a boar, you'll have much more success at sensing their presense since they are indigenous to the area, but if you are in leth, it might not be impossible, but more more difficult to sense. Once you have sensed, then you continue to meditate to see if you can commune with the animal. Upon success, a boar stands by your side. It is not a pet, it is still a wild animal, but you have developed a link for the time being.
Now, if you have been taught how to commune with a boar, a bear, a panther, and an eagle, and you do your meditation, you might receive a message stating you sense the presence of a panther and an eagle, then you can choose which you would like to commune with, depending on their traits, and what would suit your purpose best for what you are about to do. Maybe we can commune with a bat while in dark places, and benefit from their unique ability to "see" so we wont require a light source.
But, in the end, these animals are wild, therefore they are not pets, and perhaps some forms would need to be disbanded before entering towns and cities.
And a last thought, these animals can have multiple abilities, which can have their own ranking system based on your animal lore. So, you might be able to convince an eagle to fly around and cause some distraction, but would need more convincing to try and gouge the eyes out of a gryphon.
Keep it wild!

That's also a fantastic idea.
I like the fire meditation.
A question I asked myself when brainstorming ideas was "How will this differ fundamentally from Ranger pets?"
There's no reason that some overlap should be outlawed, but in my mind the more "barbarianish" the idea the better.

i'd like to see different possibilities depending on the race of your barbarian as well... i.e. i see togs possibly having different sorts of pets than a gnome.

Things not taken: (I've seen altered WM fams that are war hawks)
Some ideas are serious, some for fun.
Lions
Tigers
Bears... nevermind, taken by WM and out of the playoffs.
Battle Cats (He man really was cool)
Ferrets (yes ferrets. It worked for beastmaster)
Bootlackie thieves like the Arnold from Conan the Destroyer
Monkeys (I just think that would be really neat)

Re: The Barbarian Guild and Pets on 12/18/2007 10:09 PM CST
I'm gonna try to put together a big response with some ideas. This is gonna be long, so hang tight. Gonna go in order compared to Nehros' post. These are all ideas being tossed around to perhaps spark some better ideas from all you nerds out there. ;) So some of them may or may not make sense after second thoughts, but I'm just gonna throw them out there.
1. Pets that make sense for the Barb guild.
Alligator, Bear, Boar, Bison/Bull, Cheetah, Cobra, Elephant, Ape (I would want one of these badly second only to a hawk), Coyote, Eagle, Bat, Hound, Hawk, Fox, Hyena, Panther, Leopard, Lion, Jaguar, Python, Scorpion, Crow, Rhino, Hippo, Tiger, Swan, Vulture.
2. I will attempt to throw in some ideas for various animals. Mind you, some animals will be weaker than others (don't expect a boar to be able to be as strong as a bear). Also, I don't care if certain abilities should be switched to other pets, I just want to get the idea out there.
On Aggressive actions, I tried to give varying levels of advance speed and damage dealt at melee:
Speeds:
Slow, Normal, Fast, Extremely fast
Damage:
Minor, Mediocre, Large, Major, Deadly
Anyway, these are the ideas:
Rugged Alligator
-Aggressive (Slow advancing speed, but deadly melee attacks.)
Massive Bear
-Aggressive (Normal advancing speed, with deadly melee attacks.)
-Utility (Can weaken target's reflexes with a devastating roar.)
Savage Boar
-Aggressive (Fast advancing speed, can deal out minor damage.)
-Utility (Can cause a target to lose balance or even topple over.)
Raging Bull
-Aggressive (Fast advancing speed, can deal out major damage along with causing big bleeders more easily.)
Swift Cheetah
-Aggressive (Extremely fast advancing speed, can deal out mediocre amounts of damage at melee.)
-Utility (Provides a multi penalty to target.)
Lethal Cobra
-Utility (Can deal crippling bites that saps vitality on a target.)
Enormous Elephant
-Defensive (Can completely block and intercept attacks made on Barbarian.)
Angry Ape
-Aggressive (Normal advancing speed, with various major damaging melee brawling attacks {punch, grab, choking by the neck or squeezing the body which saps vitality, shove, elbow, and maybe even some new brawling moves like "beat" which would be a rapid succession of punches. Just like the LT throwing blades. ;)})
Couragous Coyote
-Aggressive (Fast advancing speed, can deal out mediocre damage.)
-Utility (Can howl which provides a multi boost to Barbarian.)
Watchful Eagle
-Utility (Able to locate a target across provinces.)
Black Bat
-Aggressive (Normal advancing speed, can deal minor damage.)
-Utility (Eliminates perception penalties such as head gear and "night time" penalties {and anything else that hinders perception that I'm forgetting about.})
Rabid Hound
-Aggressive (Fast advancing speed, attacks with mediocre damage.)
-Utility (Can "lock" onto a target with a successful bite, preventing target from retreating.)
Blood Hawk
-Utility (Provides a perception bonus as well as the chance to "spot" a target by diving down towards it.)
Sly Fox
-Utility (When Barbarian is stunned, distracts target to prevent more cans from being opened on the Barb for a little longer.)
-Standard (Fluff verbs!)
Crazy Hyena
-Aggressive (Fast advancing speed, deals mediocre damage.)
-Utility (Finishing aggressiveness. Will become extremely aggressive and speedy when a target is badly balanced, immobile, stunned, or unconcious.)
Sneaky Panther
-Aggressive (Fast advancing speed, deals mediocre damage.)
-Utility (Provides a small hiding and stalking bonus as well as reducing Roundtime on hiding and stalking for the Barbarian.)
Huge Leopard
-Aggressive (Fast advancing speed, deals large damage.)
-Standard (lots love leopard patterns, so make room for fluffy verbs!)
Ferocious Lion
-Aggressive (Fast advancing speed, deals major damage.)
-Utility (Has ability to pounce on a target and keep them on the ground for some time.)
Dangerous Jaguar
-Aggressive (Fast advancing speed, deals large damage.)
-Utility (Can provide a climbing boost to the Barbarian.)
Poisonous Python
-Utility (Guess what? Poisons target!)
-Utility (More poison! Except stunning poison for this one!)
Cautious Scorpion
-Defensive (When target closes to melee on Barbarian, it stings them which causes a small stun.)
Death Crow(s)
-Utility (When Barbarian dies, dozens of crows swirl around to get the attention of nearby hunters.)
Battle Rhino
-Aggressive (Normal advancing speed, deals major damage.)
-Utility (Provides a boost to Barbarian's stamina.)
Intimidating Hippo
-Defensive (Prevents target from closing to melee on Barbarian.)
-Utility (Provides a swimming bonus to Barbarian.)
Deadly Tiger
-Aggressive (Fast advancing speed, deals major damage.)
-Utility (Increases Barb's reflexes and agility.)
-Defensive (Drags Barb away to missile ranged after being stunned.)
Graceful Swan
-Utility (Increases Barb's balance.)
-Standard (fluff verbs!)
Swooping Vulture
-Utility (Drags Barb's dead body in whatever direction they want.)
-Utility (Can cause further damage to a dead body.)
Maybe some of the above can be re-arranged to give pets more things in just one phase. Meaning, instead of an aggressive and utility, perhaps some of them can have 2 utilities, while moving their aggressives to another pet. Perhaps more pets could have fluff verbs too.
Also, I know some of this stuff may tread on other guilds' territory, but this is what I was able to think of. If perhaps some of these ideas could be used for other guilds (I sure wish it wouldn't happen), then that's cool too. Hopefully we can get some more development for Barbs, and I do like the idea of having war pet/animals.
Thanks for the opportunity to post ideas, however wild they may be.

Re: The Barbarian Guild and Pets ala Lancel and Ternith on 12/18/2007 10:35 PM CST
Much like paladins can use horses we'd like to see barbarians use Warcats (Vicious, Long-fanged, and Sabre-toothed). Like horses make them trainable by rangers and paladins for certain things such as combat care and upkeep ect. Once trained we think it would be nice for the owner to indicate to the "companion" which creature to attack by signalling it to "Release warcat on (X)(CRITTER).
Along with that comes the idea of can they die in combat well of course. We differ in how we think the combat capabilities of the animals purchased so here are both ideas.
Lancel: Be able to purchase the level of whatever warcat you can based upon the Characters circle and be able to train them from that point onward.
Ternith: Make the only purchasable animal the warcat kit, and have to backtrain the animal and let it age according to IG passage of time and\or learned skill
Warcat Kit- Ownable at 15th circle or 30th if you can only purchase this one "based on that is the circle where a barbarian becomes a Titled Barbarian" (really has no other use other than to teach animal lore to prepare the barbarian for the more advanced warcats)
Vicious Warcat ? Ownable at 40th circle.
Long-fanged Warcat ? Ownable at 50th circle.
Sabre-toothed Warcat ? Ownable at 60th circle.
All would be sold in rossmans since that's the only place warcats are prominent.
Downsides:
1. it's kill is its kill. The owner can't search or skin it. Warcats are not to be in town without a leash and are not to be left alone due to the very nature of them. (possible food source)
2. Possible for them to turn on their owners. If your vitality drops below a certain point, or you are stunned there is a possilibity that the creature will turn on you and attack you because they view you as weak.
3. Can't have them in town unless leashed or you can be arrested for endangering the public. (hitching post out side of the barbs guild?)
4. Killable by other PC's (consent granted to owner)
5. Healable by Empaths but only if a Ranger with X ammount of animal lore dependant upon which type of warcat you have can 'calm' it first or if the emapth has enough animal lore.
6. Food for the war-cat would have to come from a ranger via carve or some other type of ability would have to be introduced for barbarians.
7. X ammount of animal lore needed to own and perhaps be able to treat animal with herbs.
8. They will die after a certain ammount of time (appx. 2-4 RL year if they are not killed in some other way-fat chance)
9. On command to attack a creature a skill v skill check can be made and the warcat can balk at the command and refuse to advance. (warcat vs skygiant...i don't think so)
10. Logouts: If you are kicked from the game or you log out without returning your warcat to a kennel or by command or to a hitching post, there is a possibility that the warcat will return to the wild (you lose the warcat and possibly you may face charges if someone is injured by the warcat before it returns to its natural state)
11. Horses should shy away from them unless trained not too.
12. They would be non-rideable.
Upsides:
1. They are cool.
2. On a stun if you are not attacked by the warcat, it will drag you or engage the enemy via pounce missle to melee.
3. They are hella cool.
4. Able to be trained via ranger to attack upon command.
5. Character must be trained in Upkeep of Warcat via the shop and more advanced instructions from rangers.
6. Did I mention they were cool?
7. Pit fight vs your warcat...hello Real Gladiator Combat.
8. You have to send away a warcat when you prepare to exit the game if you are not near a hitching post or at the kennel in Rossmans where you have purchased the cat. If you do send it away you will not be able to recall the warcat for a minimum of 3 to 4 hours Real time.

Here's one! More to come.
Blood Red False Pig
Utility [attracts critters ? gives off the scent of blood and makes wounded sounds both smelt/heard in adjoining rooms]
Fluff (defensive?) [Hide ? when a critter gets to melee it hides]
Fluff [bite ? Bites critter from hiding eating the small piece of flesh but does no damage]
Basiclly it ups the gen rate in the room and has fluff to justify it.

Re: The Barbarian Guild and Pets on 12/19/2007 08:08 AM CST
Some pretty cool ideas. I am not a barbarian, but wanted to put my "wild" idea out there for you all.
"Pet" - Spirits (random chance of different spirits summoned to the call of the barbarian). I have in mind the following: crazed, ancestor, blood, death, or love.
"Utility" - Depends on the type of "spirit" that answers the call of the barbarian.
Ancestor - Defensive "this is the spirit of your ancestors and they want to protect you".
Blood - Utility "this is the spirit of the blood you have spilled in battle, it makes you bleed less and staunches your blood for certain durations"
Death - Offensive "this is the spirit of the glory of death to your enemies, it will attack all enemies in the area at your direction...assuming you can control it"
Love - Fluffy/utility "this is the spirit of your love for battle, drink, carousing and all things barbarian...while it regals you with witty tales of the above it will also help restore your inner fire"
Crazed - Negative "this is the spirit of a berserk barbarian who died in combat and is unwilling to let go of his/her rage. It will attach the summoner on sight."
"Cool Thoughts"
1. The "spirits" can only be seen by the barbarian except for the "death spirit". Think of a barbarian having a conversation with someone no one else can see! This keeps in my mind the wild-eyed barbarian in a tavern that everyone edges away from.
2. The act of "summoning" is a ritual in and of itself. Although it uses inner fire, the spirit will stay with the barbarian for a lengthy time (some skill check for time) or until the barbarians inner fire can no longer support it. The higher circle (or other skill/attribute check) the more likely a barbarian can summon its intended spirit.
Anyway, this seemed to me to be something different than other guilds...and seemed to fit nicely into MY idea of a barbarian.
Good luck with your selections.

I see a quest for a barbarian to get a "pet" similar to a totem animal, very much along the line of the american indian tribes.
So theres no "magic" involved, but it would be something cool, and possibly some historical stuff could be divulged to the questing barbarian as to the history of his/her guild. And WHY the boar or such became the emblem, etc.

Barbarians are killing machines and I believe don't need any help (offensively at least) in combat.
What I would like to see:
Priority #1
Gorilla [or other cool beast]
[Utility - counts as 1 extra body to increase gen rate]
Priority #2
>Call Gorilla
Your Gorilla strides in.
>rem pack
You take a scuffed traveler's pack off your back.
>
>put pack on Gorilla
You attach a scuffed traveler's pack to your Gorilla's back.
>rem haversack
......
>look Gorilla
You see your Gorilla [Description] it is wearing a pack, a haversack, a haversack.

P.S.
If we get a pet that kills stuff and we get nothing out of it (Besides that it would be really cool at first) I garuntee that the novetly of the newness will wear off and most people will never use them. (except probably when you are testing out new hunting grounds)

Counts toward your 'group' for roars?
Uses roars themselves?
Intimidation boosts?
Meditative focus for certain animals? (You see your 'spiritual' reflection in the eyes of your beastly counterpart)
And the following is purely personal bias because I stood next to one and was overly intimidated myself..
Lose Tigers and Lions from the list and call it a compromise with Ligers.

Right now transferrance is set up pretty much exclusively for PCs. Guess it's time to ask again about horse healing. Maybe it's actually already done (a la the TAKE/TRANSFER fixes from a while back that gave us quick and careful modes) and was waiting all this time on the actual critters being changed (which would be what's happening now).
J'Lo, I'm a ranger.. I'd believe anything.....

>>Counts toward your 'group' for roars?
Definitely. Should be a feature for ALL barbarian pets.
>>Uses roars themselves?
Would be nice but probably a high-tier animal ability... like, say, if you got stunned a defensive animal would try roaring Vengeance to snap you out of it.
OH, and also, it would be awesome if Barbarian pets counted in your group for battle cries as well, meaning you could actually use them without another PC present.
>>Intimidation boosts?
Always nice and I wouldn't turn my nose up at it, but between berserks, dances, warpaint, roar helms, and actual roars that lower intimidation resistance I think Barbarians are pretty well-covered.
"Intimidation boost" seems to be one of those things that get attached to all Barb abilities now. Honestly if I had to choose between this and something new like a boost to passive IF regeneration or an increase in the amount of IF attained per kill I'd much rather have the latter. Though like I said, it would still be nice.

This would be pretty nice as well, possibly with a pet out and about I could use Cyclone regularly a bit earlier than I can now (which I never do now). It seems, when it comes to berserks, after nightmare, they gain larger gaps on when you can actually use them.
I still favor the increased gen rate over anything though.

Here is todays suggestions:
Indigo Winged Warbler know as the Flying squid
Defensive [sprays a cloud of inky black `smoke? when an arrow comes near it obscuring the view of the attacker]
Defensive [Startling scream that has a Chance of bringing someone out of hiding.]
Pigmy War Mammoth
Utility [Picks up your weapon if you are dead]
Utility [Will drag you to a safe area...]
Utility [will hold up to 4 bundles of skins]
Iron Shelled Turtle
Utility [will attract and ground all lightning attacks in the room]
Utility [will sit on your dropped weapon if you are dead, protecting it from thieves and the janitor]
Giant Toothed Beaver
Utility [will drag you in water when swimming]
Utility [will gnaw through the back of wooden boxes (only) releasing their contents.]
Note on my Golden Welken.. it would work through increasing your luck and making you calmer as you worked.. phermones ya know... Bites you when you get it to make them specific to its owner.

>>GM Jaedren's post.
Perhaps if our war animal, whatever it is, counted towards the group bonus for battlecries, it would provide battlecries with more uses.
I would love to see an intimidation boost from having a war animal out, no matter what it is.
War animals using roars would be nice, but it would have to be on a pet to pet basis. I personally would find this kinda fun, at least, depending on it's usefulness.
< You clamp your teeth on an arbelog's abdomen gnashing it with painful bites that cuts deeply into its groin.
An arbelog is moderately stunned!
An arbelog hisses out a whispered curse as it stumbles, falls, then dies.
[You're very badly balanced]

well actually he said he complimented his comment with the reasoning that he can't even kill rats. I think DR screwed something up with young ones and the beginning critters, as i see complaints all the time about not being able to kill rats or not learning correctly from them for some reason or another. (I don't remember having any problems going into rats when my character was that young.) So by the time he gets the pet, I am sure he would grow out of that phase and be able to kill things on his own.

>I think DR screwed something up with young ones and the beginning critters
I've started a ton of young characters recently and have had no problem in rats. It's pretty much the only thing I can hunt with my crappy connection. After the first few ranks you're barely in any danger, and most guilds will give you enough ranks that you should be safe.
