Dulcinia, I'm glad that someone's immortalized this quote, as I think it was probably the best thing said on these forums - ever.
That is all.
On the other hand, we sometimes screw up and do something popular. We're working on that, though- GM Dartenian

A few of my good friends encouraged me to express my thoughts on the barbarian pet system. I know its too late to unring a bell but I suppose I'm a bit concerned about the direction this takes us. Are these pets going to be doing specifically barbarian things for us like turn grindstones or influence our barb-only abilities? I care less about what the pets look like, and more about what they imply. No matter how much I try and look at the system I can't help but think of the striking resemblance to warrior mage familiars and ranger companions. Even calling them 'pets' just sounds so siiissssy. I raised hell over the 'Arcane Warlord' title because for the longest time Warlord was a strictly barbarian title that I really looked up to and respected. Guilds LIKE being different from each other. I'm just not sure adding a system that makes the guilds less distinct from eachother is the wisest. For having a creature that helps hunt for me at the cost of feeling like a smellier ranger...I'm just skeptical.
I can see that this IS going to happen though, so I just strongly encourage that a keen eye is kept to making sure pets are not knock off familiars. I always appreciate development of the barbarian guild I just think its imperative to adhere to the overall spirit of ...barbarian..ish..ness? I suggest that any of the animals designed be completely different from any other guild summoned thing. No wolves, bears, owls, panthers, alfar, etc. Basically nothing thats already 'taken'. And please. Please. Change the name from 'pets'.

It sounds like you have a decent grasp of what familiars, moon critters, horses, guardian spirits, and companions are capable of. Take all of that knowledge, stuff it in a bag, and bury it in the backyard (do not have a cleric bless it, though, we might need it to rise up from the dead). Existing pets and those newly-introduced will not necessarily be following those same rules and limitations.
Apparently each guild is not going to be getting a pet or other sort of companion-like critter. Also, the "pets" could be people and according to a certain someone who asked to remain unnamed, it could even be a way to have babies in DR (Ratha Bank style or otherwise).
J'Lo, I'm a ranger.. I'd believe anything.....

I could picture a Barbarians pet as...
>desc dog
You see a black furred dog, much larger then your average dog. You would be safe to assume their is no love lost between the dog and it's master. It is blessed with stout limbs and gives you a chill to look upon. Scars line the body and it is evident that this dog has seen his share of combat. The rough but sturdy chain tied to this slavering beast and the Barbarian it is following is your only feeling of safety, the urge to move on away from this pair is immense. The low growl in your direction reaffirms this feeling.

What I would like to see is that barbarian pets require that you "establish dominance" over them. That warcat won't follow you because you bought it, but because you beat the hell out of it and now there's a grudging respect between the two of you. If you weaken in anyway, the <insert pet> will turn on you, giving you a fitting death, or desert you. Perhaps permanent claw, fang, etc. scars and marks on the barbarian to acknowledge the bond.
Personally, I would like a student that wants to learn the way of the blade and war from me. Could be used to carry extra weapons, and perhaps give passive learning to certain weapons as I teach him. As he grows older/gains in ability then he could fight alongside me, providing flanking bonuses and possibly helping out in the forge.
I understand this could likely be done with an initiate barbarian PC, but they don't tend to listen too well. :-D

Would be cool if there was some kind of apprenticeship program for guilds. Not sure how that would work just a thought.
I agree on the assert dominance part of a Barbs pet.
