I would expect the effects of Desert Maelstrom to change the assessment of critter balance, but it doesn't look like that's happening. Am I reading this right?

Here is the assessment, then the pulse, then the reassessment. The balance looks the same and facing look the same:

You (nimbly balanced) are facing a tall gam chaga (1) at melee range.
A tall gam chaga (1: solidly balanced) is facing you at melee range.
A frail gam chaga (2: solidly balanced) is behind you at melee range.
A lumpy gam chaga (3: nimbly balanced) is behind you at melee range.
A tall gam chaga (4: nimbly balanced) is flanking you at melee range.

(You are also defending against a tall gam chaga.)

You feel fully rested.

* A tall gam chaga claws at you. You beat off most of the claw with a highly polished kertig scimitar with a dragon's head pommel.
[You're nimbly balanced and have slight advantage.]
>
You shift with the force of the gusting storm of sound, leaning into the wind at just the right moment.
The rhythms of your enchante begin to slow, growing deeper as you near to the chorus. As you chant, a resonant quality enters your voice, beating with the song's characteristic harshness in a manner that saps your own strength even as it displays the depths of it.
The gam chaga spins around quickly, appearing to lose track of its surroundings in the swirling miasma of sound.

Just wondering. Thanks.

I find DEMA to be quite underwhelming, as well.

Also, I've noticed that DEMA will knock around dead critters. This is happening in maulers/warklins.
