>>I was thinking more long-term, open combat, rather than a scenario where the end is marked by a single death.

You didn't specify victory conditions. =P Leilond seems to have characterized the victory conditions as "death", in which case he is correct.

>>Why do you think all GMPC's are incredibly powerful combat wise?

Your very question implies that it's possible to be incredibly powerful not combat wise.

And the answer to it is what I said before: most people are incapable of respecting someone who can't step on them nonchalantly.

The Lore rewrite won't fix that. That can only really be fixed when people start appreciating art and craft, as players, of roleplay. Many DR players do. But many more do not. They just want to kill stuff.

There was an anthropologist of sorts, a GMPC, who went to Shard recently-ish. How incredibly powerful combat wise was this person?

I think you are looking at two sides of the same coin. Leilond is right in that there are many that look down on characters that are not combat-powerful. That is a problem in DR the game, and the culture of DR.

However, there are other ways to gain respect, as has been pointed out here by many others.

There are also other forms of power. You've probably heard the story before about Daer, but she and her fiance were waylaid once at the ferry and her fiance was baited and killed. There was no way Daer could fight these three on their terms, but she could fight them on her own terms, using her strengths.

She wrote a song, ridiculing these three and telling what they did. She sang it everywhere.. and I mean everywhere. She held them up to ridicule, but no lies were told. They confronted her, tried to get consent - yeah they could kill her but they couldnt shut her up. (Yeah, you know how she is). Actually started a riot in Crossing.

Lethargy once did this too, when someone graverobbed an item from her. She ended up getting it back.

Would it work today? I don't know - hopefully the GMs woud realize that this is the way bards can fight back. It worked then - they died many more times then once.

Of course some characters relish the bad reputation.... but its more fun to just ridicule them and question what little manhood types like this have.

umm... anyway, thats my two lirums.

That's a great story, but Bards can also fight back with blades.

A few more screams are really all that stand between Bards and complete respect, I think. Even from the combat cronies.

Just a side message Galren... I don't know if you changed your last name to Rippentrop or not, but you're listed on the Ratha register as Galren Norim... Saw that yesterday.

Depends on if people get involved that report.

If they do, warnings and you being told to shut up is what will happen.

Just to further stir things up...

Find me the highest Bard and I will wipe him/her off the face of Dragonrealms. Why? Because he/she/it is a BARD.

Except me of course, because I also train Light Thrown, one of the greatest weapon skills in the game.

Hey now you gotta keep quiet about LT. We don't want to draw too much attention to it.
